    Die europäische Romantik war nicht nur heterogen und intern zerstritten. Sie hatte sich auch gegen Aufklärung und Klassizismus zu verteidigen, welche um die Zeit der Französischen Revolution weiterlebten. Klassizisten betrachteten die Romantik als Anhäufung abtrünniger "neuer Schulen", die das Monopol der Classical Tradition bedrohten. Die erbitterten Debatten in Ästhetik und Politik wurden auf beiden Seiten mit den überkommenen Strategien der klassischen "ars disputandi" geführt. Unter schwerstem satirischem Beschuss begann die Romantik, sich als eine Bewegung zu begreifen, und es entstand der problematische Gegensatz von "klassisch" und "romantisch". Diese Konstruktion war aber unverzichtbar, um die Fronten im Wirrwarr der Stimmen zu klären, und blieb es auch in der Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft, die auf solche Subsumptionen nicht verzichten kann. Die Classical Tradition, die das Christentum einschließt, erweist sich als ein laufender Prozess von der Antike bis heute. ; ger Romanticism was not only heterogeneous and disunited. It also had to face the counter-movements of the Enlightenment and Augustan Neoclassicism, which were still gaining momentum in the decades around the French Revolution. Neoclassicists regarded Romanticism as a heretical amalgam of dissenting "new schools" threatening the monopoly of the Classical Tradition. Acrimonious debates in aesthetics and politics were conducted with the traditional strategies of the classical "ars disputandi" on both sides. Under the duress of the heaviest satirical attacks, Romanticism began to gradually see itself as one movement, giving rise to the problematic opposition of "Classical" with "Romantic". This construction, however, was indispensable for the clarification of different positions among the hubbub of conflicting voices. It has also proved critical in literary and cultural studies. The Classical Tradition emerges as an ongoing event from Greek and Latin antiquity via Neoclassicism and Romanticism to our time. ; eng

    In kritischer Auseinandersetzung mit der aktuellen Forschung wird eine paradigmatische Lektüre der »Athenaeums-Frag-mente« und zugehöriger Texte der Jenaer Frühromantik als eines paradoxen Projekts vollendeter Mitteilung entwickelt. Die Romantik bleibt kontrovers: Manchen gilt sie als progressiv, anderen als repressiv und totalitär. Am Beispiel der »Athenaeums-Fragmente« und anderer Schriften der Frühromantik wird argumentiert, dass einer der wichtigsten Gründe für die Ambivalenz und Aktualität der Romantik in ihrem widersprüchlichen, ironischen und fragmentarischen Streben nach vollendeter Mitteilung liegt. Statt zwischen Schlegels Tendenzen zu Freiheit und Totalität zu entscheiden, werden die Gespräche zwischen Autoren und Texten rekonstruiert, die sein Projekt ermöglicht und die in Platons Symposion über den Eros ihr wichtigstes Vorbild und zugleich ihren ältesten Dialogpartner finden.

"Is it the expression of that inexplicable erotic sentiment, that concordant elective affinity of souls, or is it a duty or a partnership . . . or is it a little of all that?" Like Kierkegaard a few decades later, many of Germany's most influential thinkers at the turn of the eighteenth century wondered about the nature of marriage but rejected the easy answers provided by biology and theology. In Uncivil Unions, Adrian Daub presents a truly interdisciplinary look at the story of a generation of philosophers, poets, and intellectuals who turned away from theology, reason, common sense, and empirical observation to provide a purely metaphysical justification of marriage. Through close readings of philosophers like Fichte and Schlegel, and novelists like Sophie Mereau and Jean Paul, Daub charts the development of this new concept of marriage with an insightful blend of philosophy, cultural studies, and theory.
