    Is the affiliation between intellectuals and hegemony unbreakable? When intellectuals attempt to retell history from its bottom side, or when writers try to represent the so-called marginalized subject, are they not simply reinforcing the perspective and agenda of society’s hegemonic currents? Cooptation, Complicity, and Representation engages in a discussion of the problem of this potentially unbreakable affiliation between intellectuals and hegemony. Through five twentieth-century Mexican literary works: Pedro Páramo (1955, Juan Rulfo); Hasta no verte Jesús mío (1969, Elena Poniatowska); three short stories from Ciudad Real (1960, Rosario Castellanos); Llanto: Novelas imposibles (1992, Carmen Boullosa); and Muertos incómodos (falta lo que falta) (2005, Subcomandate Marcos and Paco Ignacio Taibo II), this book attempts to examine the contradictory phenomenon that emerges when intellectuals’ desire to represent a marginalized subject or history clashes with their own limited ability to fully know the marginalized. No critics have compiled these five seemingly unrelated Mexican texts in order to scrutinize such a contradictory tendency. Cooptation, Complicity, and Representation provides an innovative way to connect the five texts by delineating, within specific Mexican historical and geopolitical contexts, how and why intellectuals have difficulty moving away from the reproduction of «otherness», when they attempt to represent a marginalized subject or history. This book can be useful for those who are interested in the Spanish American boom literature, twentieth-century Mexican literature, women writing, testimonial writing, subaltern studies, postcolonial studies, historical novels, and cultural studies.

    This collection analyzes how narrative technique developed from the late Middle Ages to the beginning of the 18th century. Taking Chaucer's influential Middle English works as the starting point, the original essays in this volume explore diverse aspects of the formation of early modern prose narratives. Essays focus on how a sense of selfness or subjectivity begins to establish itself in various narratives, thus providing a necessary requirement for the individuality that dominates later novels. Other contributors investigate how forms of intertextuality inscribe early modern prose within previous traditions of literary writing. A group of chapters presents the process of genre-making as taking place both within the confines of the texts proper, but also within paratextual features and through the rationale behind cataloguing systems. A final group of essays takes the implicit notion of the growing realism of early modern prose narrative to task by investigating the various social discourses that feature ever more strongly within the social, commercial, or religious dimensions of those texts. The book addresses a wide range of literary figures such as Chaucer, Wroth, Greene, Sidney, Deloney, Pepys, Behn, and Defoe. Written by an international group of scholars, it investigates the transformations of narrative form from medieval times through the Renaissance and the early modern period, and into the eighteenth century.

    Heimat als Aventiure – unter Verwendung des mittelhochdeutschen Aventiurekonzepts wird der Heimatbegriff zwischen 1989 und 2001 an seinen Rändern außerhalb der traditionellen Heimatliteratur untersucht. Heimat wird vom Territorium abgelöst, was eine Individualisierung des Begriffs zur Folge hat und gleichzeitig dessen Öffnung durch die Auffassung von Geschichte als Erzählung ermöglicht. Über eine Postmoderne-Konzeption nach Welsch und dem erwähnten erzähltheoretischen Zugang über Aventiure, einer strukturalistischen Vorgangsweise und der möglichen-Welten-Theorie wird Heimat beweglich und schließlich selbst zu einer Erzählung. Heimat erscheint als Möglichkeitsraum einer Aventiure, die durch das Erzählen performativ realisiert wird. Histoire und discours fallen dabei in eins, wodurch Heimat entsteht.

    Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg ist – wahrscheinlich als Reaktion gegen den Historismus – die Problematisierung von Geschichte in bislang unbekannter Weise in die deutschsprachige Literatur eingegangen. Vor allem in den Werken der «Zwischenkriegszeit» wurde die Auseinandersetzung mit Macht und Geschichte zu einem bald offenen, bald versteckten, aber immer zentralen Anliegen. Anstatt sie auf die Problematik des Engagements zu reduzieren, dokumentieren die hier versammelten Studien die verschiedenen literarischen Umsetzungen dieser Debatte und stellen sich die Frage nach den Verhältnissen zwischen Politik, Ethik und Ästhetik.

    Mit ihren am „Leitfaden des Leibes" orientierten Lektüren wendet sich diese Arbeit einem Phänomen zu, das eine zentrale Stelle im Schaffen Heinrich Heines behauptet und das bisher vor allem im Zusammenhang der vormärzlichen Debatte um die „Emanzipation des Fleisches" untersucht worden ist. Den vorliegenden Analysen liegt die Annahme zugrunde, dass die Präsenz der Körperthematik im komplexen (Euevre Heines mit dem Bedürfnis nach einer argumentativen Verteidigung der Sinnlichkeit nicht hinreichend erklärt ist. Diese Hypothese motiviert die Frage, welche semantische und kommunikative Qualität einer der prominentesten deutschen Autoren und Intellektuellen des 19. Jahrhunderts dem Körper auch unabhängig von besagter Kontroverse zugeschrieben hat. Die Frage, welches Wissen um den Körper des Menschen, welche Wahrnehmungsmuster, welche Körperbilder unddeutungen in Heines Texten begegnen, sucht die Autorin anhand des zeitgenössischen medizinischen Diskurses und überlieferter ikonographischer Muster zu beantworten. Katarzyna Jastal arbeitet am Germanistischen Institut der Jagellonen-Universität in Krakow. Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte sind deutsche und österreichische Literatur des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts sowie die deutschsprachige Literatur der Bukowina.
