    Abstract ; Der Text beschäftigt sich mit Walsers seit der Jahrhundertwende entwickelten Methoden der Thematisierung von Alltagsmythen in Märchenspielen. Mayr stellt besonders die politisch gefärbten Arbeiten der Zwanziger Jahre heraus und sucht sie als Bruchstücke einer universalen Geschichtsphilosophie zu begreifen, die den tragischen Gehalt geistiger Klischees aufspürt und hinter den Erscheinungen der Geschichte die gnadenlose Mechanik des Märchens vermutet. Ein weiteres Ziel der Arbeit besteht in der Rehabilitation Walsers als politischer Autor. ; Abstract ; This thesis deals with Robert Walser´s attempts to create a new method of myth- destruction in short plays. Developed since 1900, his plays, based on german fairy-tales and every-day-myths, reached a technical standard in the field of analysing politics that can only be compared with the one of Brecht´s works. Mayr tries to show that Walser was one of the most intelligent political authors of his time.

    Is birdsong music? The most frequent answer to this question in the Middle Ages was resoundingly "no." In Sung Birds, Elizabeth Eva Leach traces postmedieval uses of birdsong within Western musical culture. She first explains why such melodious sound was not music for medieval thinkers and then goes on to consider the ontology of music, the significance of comparisons between singers and birds, and the relationship between art and nature as enacted by the musical performance of late-medieval poetry. If birdsong was not music, how should we interpret the musical depiction of birdsong in human music-making? What does it tell us about the singers, their listeners, and the moral status of secular polyphony? Why was it the fourteenth century that saw the beginnings of this practice, continued to this day in the music of Messiaen and others?Leach explores medieval arguments about song, language, and rationality whose basic terms survive undiminished into the present. She considers not only lyrics that have their singers voice the songs or speech of birds but also those that represent other natural, nonmusical, sounds such as human cries or the barks of dogs. The dangerous sweetness of birdsong was invoked in discussions of musical ethics, which, because of the potential slippage between irrational beast and less rational woman in comparisons with rational human masculinity, depict women's singing as less than fully human. Leach's argument comes full circle with the advent of sound recording. This technological revolution-like its medieval equivalent, the invention of the music book-once again made the relationship between music and nature an acute preoccupation of Western culture

    Main description: This study sets out to refute the traditional conception of Tuscan invective verse (so-called comic-realistic poetry) in the duecento as belonging to the middle or low style defined in the Artes poetriae from Galfrid to Dante. The subjects addressed and the rhetorical devices employed are impossible to square with the recommendations formulated in the poetics of the time. Nor can the comic passages of the »Commedia« be adequately described in these terms. A section on the productive reception accorded to these works investigates the influences of research paradigms on the description of invective poetry in historical novels and short stories

    Main description: Der Sammelband bietet eine umfassende Darstellung der Lyrik in der Frühen Neuzeit. Die Studien des exzellenten Kenners der neulateinischen und deutschen Literatur interpretieren unbekannte poetische Werke der Zeit oder lassen solche des Kanons in einer veränderten Perspektive erscheinen. Dabei setzt sich ein Bild der Epoche aus den immensen Detailkenntnissen zusammen, die den Beiträgen zugrundeliegen. Die ästhetische Form der einzelnen Gedichte, von denen die literaturgeschichtlichen Miniaturen ihren Ausgang nehmen, wird dabei stets berücksichtigt und so ein angemessenes Verständnis der komplexen Texte erreicht.     Main description: The studies assembled here provide a comprehensive survey of German poetry in the early modern age. Penned by an outstanding authority on neo-Latin and German literature, they supply interpretations of little-known poetic works of the period and cast a new light on more familiar works in the literary canon. The immensely detailed knowledge informing the different articles adds up to a literary image of the epoch as a whole. The individual poems discussed provide the basis for these micro-studies in literary history. Together with a constant concern for their aesthetic form, the approach achieves an appropriate understanding of these complex texts. At one and the same time, the volume is an introduction to the salient issues posed by the epoch in question and a guide to the present state of research on the poetry of the early modern age. The rich source material examined and analyzed in the process both enhances and reshapes our knowledge of the subject

Religious diversity and ferment characterize the period that gave rise to Romanticism in England. It is generally known that many individuals who contributed to the new literatures of the late eighteenth century came from Dissenting backgrounds, but we nonetheless often underestimate the full significance of nonconformist beliefs and practices during this period. Daniel White provides a clear and useful introduction to Dissenting communities, focusing on Anna Barbauld and her familial network of heterodox "liberal" Dissenters whose religious, literary, educational, political, and economic activities shaped the public culture of early Romanticism in England. He goes on to analyze the roles of nonconformity within the lives and writings of William Godwin, Mary Wollstonecraft, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and Robert Southey, offering a Dissenting genealogy of the Romantic movement

    In this overview of twentieth-century American poetry, Jennifer Ashton examines the relationship between modernist and postmodernist American poetics. Ashton moves between the iconic figures of American modernism - Stein, Williams, Pound - and developments in contemporary American poetry to show how contemporary poetics, specially the school known as language poetry, have attempted to redefine the modernist legacy. She explores the complex currents of poetic and intellectual interest that connect contemporary poets with their modernist forebears. The works of poets such as Gertrude Stein and John Ashbery are explained and analysed in detail. This major account of the key themes in twentieth-century poetry and poetics develops important ways to read both modernist and postmodernist poetry through their similarities as well as their differences.     Northern Irish poets have been accused of reticence in addressing political issues in their work. In Sympathetic Ink, Shane Alcobia-Murphy challenges this view through a consideration of the works of Seamus Heaney, Paul Muldoon and Medbh McGuckian. Making use of substantial collections of the poets' papers which have only recently become available, Alcobia-Murphy focuses on the oblique, subtle strategies employed by these poets to critique contemporary political issues. He employs the concept of sympathetic ink, or invisible ink, arguing that rather than avoiding politics, these poets have, via complex intertextual references and resonances, woven them deeply into the formal construction of their works. Acute and learned, Sympathetic Ink re-examines existing attitudes towards Northern Irish poetry as well as being the first critical work to address the poetry of Medbh McGuckian.
