    This work is a pioneer study in an area of literary investigation which is now beginning to attract increased attention in the Commonwealth and in the United States. The author's principal effort has been to understand the characteristics and implications of the two literatures he is studying rather than to assign literary merit and he seeks this understanding through careful exploration of the social setting in which their poetry developed. Canadian and Australian creative writing springs from common roots; settlers in each country brought as part of their effects an English tradition and this tradition became, in both countries, a tradition in exile. What has each country done with its inheritance? How has each responded to identical influences which continued to enter from abroad? How has each moulded these traditions and influences into new and recognizable national patterns? With care and insight the author analyses the differences from the parent stock and from each other which developed in poetry over the years, and the reader will come to share his conviction that more may be discovered about both Canadian and Australian literatures when they are compared than when they are studied in isolation. Into his account he brings discussions of the relations in each country of frontiers and urban centres, of tradition and revolt, of academic and popular cultures and the final effect is provocative and lucid, fresh and challenging

    The French poetry of some five centuries is here surveyed in a series of studies of the work and personality of individual poets from Villon to the present day. Each chapter is primarily concerned with establishing the literary identity' of the poet or poets with whom it deals: the work of each is outlined and related to the historical and biographical circumstances in which it was written; and its characteristics are then examined critically in terms relevant to the modern reader. Comparisons are made between different poets, and more general topics - such as the concepts of classic' and baroque' - are discussed. This book, first published in 1956, had become a standard introductory work for students of French poetry and general readers alike. For this revised edition, originally published in 1973, new chapters have been added on irregular' seventeenth-century poets and on various modern poets whose work now enables the Surrealist movement to be seen in clearer perspective.     The aim of the author, who has long been interested in the history of ideas, has been to give some illustrations of the ways in which at various periods English poetry has reflected current views of the human mind, with special reference to such topics as its place in the cosmos, its relations with the body, the connections between sense, passions, and reason, the problem of soul and its possible survival after death. The subject matter is important, for many of the more self-conscious writers have been profoundly affected by their assumptions about the senses and passions, the reason and the imagination.The author traces four main historical phases in each of which different aspects and potentialities of the mind have been stressed. Chapter I discusses the microcosmic conception of man inherited from the Middle Ages and traces its influence in some allegorical and didactic verse, lyric and epic. Chapter II considers the development of Shakespeare’s attitude to the mind and human character. Chapter III turns to some effects (between Dryden and Wordsworth) of the seventeenth-century revolution in philosophy and science, including the search for clarity and order, the Augustan interest in reason and the passions, and the rise of the association of psychology. Chapter IV shows how the Romantic poets made use of associations and intuitions, and discusses the Victorian poets’ hopes and fears about immortality in relation to the advance of science. The last chapter traces the influence of the philosophy of the "moment" from the aesthetes to T.S. Eliot, and distinguishes the effects of some twentieth-century psychologies in modern poetry.Poets, of course, have rarely been systematic philosophers or psychologists; they have usually picked out and applied imaginatively only a few notions from contemporary thought.     This work is a pioneer study in an area of literary investigation which is now beginning to attract increased attention in the Commonwealth and in the United States. The author's principal effort has been to understand the characteristics and implications of the two literatures he is studying rather than to assign literary merit and he seeks this understanding through careful exploration of the social setting in which their poetry developed. Canadian and Australian creative writing springs from common roots; settlers in each country brought as part of their effects an English tradition and this tradition became, in both countries, a tradition in exile. What has each country done with its inheritance? How has each responded to identical influences which continued to enter from abroad? How has each moulded these traditions and influences into new and recognizable national patterns? With care and insight the author analyses the differences from the parent stock and from each other which developed in poetry over the years, and the reader will come to share his conviction that more may be discovered about both Canadian and Australian literatures when they are compared than when they are studied in isolation. Into his account he brings discussions of the relations in each country of frontiers and urban centres, of tradition and revolt, of academic and popular cultures and the final effect is provocative and lucid, fresh and challenging
