This book reflects on the myriad ways in which forms of exclusion and inclusion play out in narratives of migration, focusing on the case of Northern Italian narratives in today's superdiverse Italy. Drawing on over a decade of the author's fieldwork in the region, the volume examines the emergence of racialized language in conversations about migrants or migration issues in light of increasing recent migratory flows in the European Union, couched in the broader context of changing socio-political forces such as anti-immigration policies and nativist discourse in political communication in Italy. The book highlights case studies from everyday discourse in both villages and cities and at different levels of society to explore these "intimacies of exclusion," the varying degrees to which inclusion and exclusion manifest themselves in conversation on migration. The book also employs a narrative practice-based approach which considers storytelling as a more dynamic form of discourse, thus allowing for equally new ways of analyzing their content and impact. Offering a valuable contribution to the growing literature on narratives of migration, this volume is key reading for graduate students and scholars in linguistic anthropology, sociolinguistics, sociocultural anthropology, language and politics, and migration studies

This book offers a comprehensive account of the audiovisual translation (AVT) of humour, bringing together insights from translation studies and humour studies to outline the key theories underpinning this growing area of study and their applications to case studies from television and film. The volume outlines the ways in which the myriad linguistic manifestations and functions of humour make it difficult for scholars to provide a unified definition for it, an issue made more complex in the transfer of humour to audiovisual works and their translations as well as their ongoing changes in technology. Dore brings together relevant theories from both translation studies and humour studies toward advancing research in both disciplines. Each chapter explores a key dimension of humour as it unfolds in AVT, offering brief theoretical discussions of wordplay, culture-specific references, and captioning in AVT as applied to case studies from Modern Family. A dedicated chapter to audio description, which allows the visually impaired or blind to assess a film's non-verbal content, using examples from the 2017 film the Big Sick, outlines existing research to date on this under-explored line of research and opens avenues for future study within the audiovisual translation of humour. This book is key reading for students and scholars in translation studies and humour studies

Metaphors of Multilingualism explores changing attitudes towards multilingualism by focusing on shifts both in the choice and in the use of metaphors. Rainer Guldin uses linguistics, philosophy, literature, literary theory and related disciplines to trace the radical redefinition of multilingualism that has taken place over the last decades. This overall change constitutes a paradigmatic shift. However, despite the emergence of the new paradigm, the traditional monolingual point of view is still significantly influencing present-day attitudes towards multilingualism. Consequently, the emergent paradigm has to be studied in close connection with its predecessor. This book is the first extensive attempt to provide a critical overview of the key metaphors that organize current perceptions of multilingualism. Instead of an exhaustive list of possible metaphors of multilingualism, the emphasis is on three closely interrelated and overlapping clusters that play a central role in both paradigms: organic metaphors of the body, kinship and gender metaphors, as well as spatial metaphors. The examples are taken from different languages, among them French, German, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese. This is ground-breaking reading for scholars and researchers in the fields of linguistics, literature, philosophy, media studies, anthropology, history and cultural studies

This book advances the notion of autotextuality, the dialogue between works in an author's oeuvre, and the ways in which new texts are created in self-repetition through the tracing and revisiting of past texts and the subsequent uncovering of undisclosed meanings, unexhausted constructive principles, and alternative versions. Kolarov draws on cognitive models, such as dual coding theory and conceptual blending, to substantiate a theory of autotextuality and build on previous work on self-repetition and difference to highlight the notion of discursive desire, in which new meanings are generated through repetition, and its distinct relationship to creativity. Drawing on analyses of well-established works in Bulgarian as well as the established oeuvres of such authors as Gogol, Dostoevsky, Kafka, and Baudelaire, the volume explores key themes in autotextuality such as the functions of creative memory, the connections between word and image, and the hermeneutic relationships and steps of transformation between texts. This innovative work addresses topical questions of importance in literary theory today and will be of interest to students and scholars in literary studies and related areas of study within such fields as cognitive science, quantum mechanics, and psychology

"Arts-Based Research Methods in Writing Studies offers a concise guide for writing studies scholars and other allied fields that addresses the skepticism, possibilities, and performances of Arts-Based Research (ABR). Debunking the field's resistance to art as a way of knowing, the book defines the arts-based qualitative paradigm and shows how it is already being reflected in the increasingly popular arts-based movement in writing studies. Using ABR methods of data collection and representation, the book offers an insightful case study of the composing processes and cultural contexts of refugee artists in the Sanctuary City of Syracuse, to explore themes and research questions about the connections between art and writing, how expert artists offer insight into best practices for collaborative composing, commitment to achieving a purpose, negotiating traditional techniques for current contexts, improvising, and creating with limited resources. Addressing ethical considerations and practices in research while demonstrating that ABR can provide strategies for writing studies scholars to contribute to marginalized peoples, the book discusses its pedagogical applications in a range of contexts. This book will be an important resource for scholars and graduate students in writing studies and those interested in literacy studies, transnational literacies, rhetoric, composition, first-year writing, critical writing, border rhetorics, writing centers, writing across the curriculum, writing in the disciplines, and translingualism"--...

This volume advances scholarly understanding of the ways in which discourse deixis underpins the workings of metafictional novels. Building on existing scholarship in the field, the book begins by mapping out key themes and techniques in metafiction and puts forward a focused and theoretically coherent account of discourse deixis--language which points to a section or aspect of the discourse context in which that language is used--in written literary discourse, highlighting its inherent significance in metafiction specifically. Macrae takes readers through an exploration of discourse deixis as used within the techniques of metanarration, metalepsis, and disnarration, drawing on a mix of both well-established and lesser-known metafictional novels from the late 1960s and early 1970s by such authors as John Barth, Brigid Brophy, Robert Coover, John Fowles, Steve Katz, and B.S. Johnson. This comprehensive account integrates and develops a new approach to understanding discourse deixis and innovative insights into metafictionality more broadly and will be of particular interest to scholars in literary studies, postmodern literature, narratology, and stylistics

Drawing on corpus linguistic methods of analysis, this book critically examines the "rhetorical God gap" in American political discourse between the Democratic and Republican parties. The volume investigates the claims (which have often not been substantiated by quantitative data in the literature and have tended to focus on particular genres of political discourse) that there isa correlation between a higher degree of religiosity in Republican political discourse and voting preferences for the party and that Democratic politiciansshould engage in similar discourse toward "closing" the gap. The book adopts a keyword approach, using such techniques as collocation analyses, concordance reading, and Bible-specific N-gram identification, toward the study of a corpus of general campaign speeches over a 50-year period, and links findings from this data with social and cultural contextual factors to provide a more informed understanding of rhetorical patterns in religiously laden political language. The volume showcases the value of corpus linguistic methods in interrogating claims around political language and their broader applicability in linguistic research, making this key reading for students and scholars in corpus linguistics, critical discourse analysis, American politics, and religious studies

"Academic Writing with Corpora offers a step-by-step accessible guide to using concordancers and aims to help introduce data-driven learning into the academic English classroom. Addressing the challenges faced by EAP teachers to explain to their students how to write "naturally", this book provides a solution to the problem by placing an emphasis on learning from expert and proficient writing. In doing so, it: takes a highly practical approach and is packed with pedagogical features including graded tasks; uses Lextutor, an easy-to-use, open access concordancer, throughout, whilst introducing students to tools such as SkELL, MICUSP and BNC BYU; fosters autonomous learning by demonstrating how to solve everyday difficulties in word choice and grammar; helps teachers to use concordancers to teach students how to write proficiently and helps students to improve their academic writing by learning from best examples in their field. Showing students how to solve for themselves everyday difficulties in word choice and grammar, Academic Writing with Corpora will guide them towards better awareness of the communicative side of academic writing. It forms essential reading for all students on academic writing and EAP courses or who wish to improve their writing"--...

"This book critically analyzes the body of English language translations Moliere's work for the stage, demonstrating the importance of rhyme and verse forms, the creative work of the translator, and the changing relationship with source texts in these translations and their reception. The volume questions prevailing notions about Moliere's legacy on the stage and the prevalence of comedy in his works, pointing to the high volume of English language translations for the stage of his work that have emerged since the 1950s. Adopting a computer-aided method of analysis, Ploix illustrates the role prosody plays in verse translation for the stage more broadly, highlighting the implementation of self-consciously comic rhyme and conspicuous verse forms in translations of Moliere's work by way of example. The book also addresses the question of the interplay between translation and source text in these works and the influence of the stage in overcoming formal infelicities in verse systems that may arise from the process of translation. In so doing, Ploix considers translations as texts in and of themselves in these works and the translator as a more visible, creative agent in shaping the voice of these texts independent of the source material, paving the way for similar methods of analysis to be applied to other canonical playwrights' work. The book will be of particular interest to students and scholars in translation studies, adaptation studies, and theatre studies"--...

Featuring contributions from an international group of literary and translation scholars and practitioners, working across a variety of languages, the book views the movement's development through the lens of "transcreation", framed here as the informed but creative process and response to difficult or untranslatable texts, and spotlights case studies from Ezra Pound and the Brazilian Noigrandre group, early modernism, and Chinese-language concrete poetry, while other chapters engage in discussions of social network analysis and examinations of 21st century concrete poetry to further demonstrate the significance of crosslinguistic contact in the translation process. Highlighting the myriad ways in which literary influence is mapped across languages and borders, this volume will be of interest to students and scholars in translation studies, experimental literature, poetry, and comparative literature"--...

"This ground-breaking book explores the relevance of queer theory to Translation Studies and of translation to Queer Studies. Beginning with a comprehensive overview of the origins and evolution of queer theory, this volume places Queer Theory and Translation Studies in a productive and mutually interrogating relationship. After framing the discussion of actual and potential interfaces between queer sexuality and queer textuality, the chapters trace the transnational circulation of queer texts, focusing on the place of translation in "gay" anthologies, the packaging of queer life writing for global audiences, and the translation of lyric poetry as a distinct site of queer performativity. Baer analyses fictional translators in literature and film, historical and ethnographic studies of sexual and linguistic others, the work of queer translators and the reception of queer texts in translation. Including a range of case studies to exemplify key ethical issues relevant to all scholars of global sexuality and postcolonial studies, this book is essential reading for advanced students, scholars and researchers in translation studies, gender and sexuality studies, and related areas"--...

Kirsten Malmkjr argues that translating can and should be considered a valuable art form. Examining notions of creativity and their relationship with translation and focusing on how the originality of translation is manifest in texts, the author explores a range of texts and their translations, in order to illustrate original as opposed to derivative translation. With reference to thirty translators' discourses on their source texts and the author's own experience of translating a short text, Malmkjr explores the theory of creativity, philosophical aesthetics, the philosophy of language, experimental and theoretical translation studies, and translators' discourses on their work. Showing the relevance of these varied topics to the study of translating and translations underlines their complexity and the immensity of understanding that is regularly invested in translations. This work proposes a complete rethinking of the concepts of creativity and originality, as applied to translation, and is vital reading for advanced students and researchers in translation studies and comparative literature

The second edition of this seminal text features: updated theory, frameworks, and examples throughout, including new explanations of literary meaning, the power of reading, literary force, and emotion; extended examples of literary texts from Old English to contemporary literature, covering genres including religious, realist, romantic, science fictional, and surrealist texts, and encompassing poetry, prose, and drama; new chapters on the mind-modelling of character, the building of text-worlds, the feeling of immersion and ambience, and the resonant power of emotion in literature; fully updated and accessible accounts of Cognitive Grammar, deictic shifts, prototypicality, conceptual framing, and metaphor in literary reading. Encouraging the reader to adopt a fresh approach to understanding literature and literary analyses, each chapter introduces a different framework within cognitive poetics and relates it to a literary text. Accessibly written and reader-focused, the book invites further explorations either individually or within a classroom setting. This thoroughly revised edition of Cognitive Poetics includes an expanded further reading section and updated explorations and discussion points, making it essential reading for students on literary theory and stylistics courses, as well as a fundamental tool for those studying critical theory, linguistics, and literary studies

Foundations. Concepts -- Evolution -- Approaches -- Models -- Topics. Language and memory -- Cognitive processes -- Product and effect -- Discourse in interaction -- History -- Profession -- Technology -- Education -- Directions. "This bestselling textbook, now fully updated, introduces students, researchers and practitioners to the fast-developing discipline of Interpreting Studies. Written by one of the world's leading researchers in Interpreting Studies, Introducing Interpreting Studies covers interpreting in all its varied forms, from international conference to community-based settings, in both spoken and signed modalities. The book first guides the reader through the evolution of the field, reviewing influential concepts, models and methodological approaches. It then presents the main areas of research on interpreting, and identifies present and future trends in Interpreting Studies. This edition has been updated to reflect recent advances in areas from cognitive neuroscience to multimodal discourse analysis and to cover technology-assisted and technology-mediated forms of interpreting, and the role of technology in interpreter training. Featuring chapter summaries, guides to the main points covered, and suggestions for further reading, Franz Pöchhacker's practical and user-friendly textbook is the definitive map of this important and growing discipline. Introducing Interpreting Studies gives a comprehensive overview of the field and offers guidance to those undertaking research of their own. The book is complemented by The Interpreting Studies Reader (Routledge, 2002), a collection of seminal contributions to research in Interpreting Studies, and by the comprehensive Routledge Encyclopedia of Interpreting Studies (Routledge, 2015)"--

"From tech giants to plucky startups, the world is full of companies boasting that they are on their way to replacing human interpreters, but are they right? Interpreters vs Machines offers a solid introduction to recent theory and research on human and machine interpreting, and then invites the reader to explore the future of interpreting. With a Foreword by Dr Henry Liu, the 13th FIT President and written by consultant interpreter and researcher Jonathan Downie, this book offers a unique combination of research and practical insight into the field of interpreting. Written in an innovative, accessible style with humorous touches and real-life case studies, this book is structured around the metaphor of playing and winning a computer game. It takes interpreters of all experience levels on a journey to better understand their own work, learn how computers attempt to interpret and explore possible futures for human interpreters. With five levels, split into fourteen chapters, Interpreters vs Machines is key reading for all professional interpreters, as well as students and researchers of Interpreting and Translation Studies, and those with an interest in machine interpreting"--

Revising and Editing for Translators provides guidance and learning materials for translation students and professional translators learning to revise the work of others or edit original writing, and those wishing to improve their self-revision ability. Revising and editing are seen as reading skills aimed at spotting problematic passages. Changes are then made to meet some standard of quality that varies with the text and to tailor the text to its readership. Mossop offers in-depth coverage of a wide range of topics, including copyediting, stylistic editing, checking for consistency, revising procedures and principles, and translation quality assessment--all related to the professional situations in which revisers and editors work. This revised fourth edition provides new chapters on revising machine outputs and news trans-editing, a new section on reviser competencies, and a completely new grading scheme for assignments. The inclusion of suggested activities and exercises, numerous real-world examples, and a reference glossary make this an indispensable coursebook for professional translation programmes.
