    Der vorliegende Band enthält Beiträge zur Problematik der Grenzen und ihrer Erscheinungsformen im Modus literarischer Texte. Die Narrative der Grenze betreffen sowohl ihre historische und territoriale Form als auch den Aspekt ihrer Relativität und ihres Konstruktionscharakters. Im Fokus stehen Schriftsteller als Reisende, Grenzgänger, Migranten, Exilanten sowie entsprechende literarische Figuren. Grenzen erscheinen in ihrer ambivalenten Struktur als unüberwindbar und schutzbietend, aber auch durchlässig und offen. Dabei wird der Abschottungswille gegen das Andere und Fremde als Energieverlust kritisiert und gleichzeitig die Notwendigkeit der Grenzen im ethischen Sinne unterstrichen. Die Autoren heben die Aspekte der räumlichen, sprachlichen oder zeitlichen Grenzüberschreitungen sowie die Überschreitung der Text- und Gattungsgrenzen hervor.

This book provides a pre-history of Russia's war on Ukraine and Europe’s relations to it, illuminating the deep roots of the EU’s neighbourhood crisis as well as the migration crises it created in the last decade. To do so, the book employs a new and innovative framework that allows for a comprehensive, yet nuanced analysis of borders and a more cogent interpretation of their socio-political consequences. Drawing on interdisciplinary scholarship the book analytically examines the key common elements of borderscapes and links them in related arrays to allow for nuanced evaluation of both their particular and cumulative effects, as well as interpretation of their overall consequences, particularly for issues of identities and orders. The book offers a significant conceptual and theoretical advance, providing a transferable conceptualization of borderscape to guide research, analysis, and interpretation. Drawing on the author’s experience in policy, practice and academia, it also makes a methodological contribution by pushing the boundaries of reflexivity in interpretive International Relations (IR) research. Analyzing three main sites in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), the book challenges conventional critical wisdom on EU bordering in the Schengen zone, at its external frontiers, and in its Eastern neighborhood. In so doing, it sheds new light on the post-communist transitions as well as the contemporary politics of CEE. It also shows how European Union bordering and its relations to identities and orders created great benefits for many Europeans, but also hindered the lives of many others and became self-defeating. This book is a must-read for scholars, students, and policy-makers, interested in a better understanding of Critical Border Studies (CBS) in particular, and International Relations in general. It will also appeal to anyone interested in CEE or wishing to get a deeper understanding of Russia’s war and the fight for Europe’s future.

    Como apresentar uma resposta para as condições de violência? Com o desenvolvimento midiático e a globalização, surgem novas formas de violência diariamente. São questões políticas, econômicas, sociais, individuais, culturais, epistêmicas etc. A própria diversidade e ambiguidade dessa realidade transcultural favorece o surgimento de epistemes orientadas para disciplinar as subjetividades. Neste cenário de complexidade, essa pesquisa justifica-se pela necessidade de maior elasticidade epistêmica para "dar conta" das diferentes situações que nos confrontam diariamente. Diante disso, nosso objetivo é apresentar uma proposta de interpretação bíblica capaz de lidar com as múltiplas formas de violência relacionadas à diversidade e às ambiguidades de nossa época. Para isso se propõe uma investigação de elementos da teologia bíblica, principalmente da teologia paulina, que serão estudadas à luz da Mentalidade de Fronteira de Gloria Anzaldúa. Será uma pesquisa explicativa e documental. As fontes serão analisadas de forma qualitativa a partir de métodos da literatura comparada. E, espera-se que ao término, a proposta de Anzaldúa contribua para a compreensão da teologia paulina como uma proposta de Teologia de Fronteira que funcione como episteme de resistência. How can we present a response to conditions of violence? With media development and globalization, new forms of violence emerge daily. These are political, economic, social, individual, cultural, epistemic issues, etc. The very diversity and ambiguity of this transcultural reality favours the emergence of epistemes aimed at disciplining subjectivities. In this complex scenario, this research is justified by the need for greater epistemic elasticity to “handle” the different situations that confront us daily. Given this, our objective is to present a proposal for biblical interpretation capable of dealing with the multiple forms of violence related to the diversity and ambiguities of our time. To this end, an investigation of elements of biblical theology, mainly Pauline theology, is proposed, which will be studied in the light of Glória Anzaldúa’s ‘Frontier Mentality’. It will be a piece of explanatory and documentary research. The sources will be analysed qualitatively using comparative literature methods. And it is hoped that in the end, Anzaldúa’s proposal will contribute to an understanding of Pauline theology as a type of Frontier Theology that functions as an episteme of resistance. ¿Cómo abordar una respuesta a las condiciones de violencia? Con el desarrollo de los medios de comunicación y la globalización, surgen nuevas formas de violencia a diario. Estas abarcan cuestiones políticas, económicas, sociales, individuales, culturales, epistémicas, entre otras. La misma diversidad y ambigüedad de esta realidad transcultural fomenta la creación de epistemes destinadas a disciplinar las subjetividades. En este contexto de complejidad, esta investigación se justifica por la necesidad de una mayor flexibilidad epistémica para “abordar” las diferentes situaciones con las que nos enfrentamos a diario. En este sentido, nuestro objetivo es presentar una propuesta de interpretación bíblica capaz de lidiar con las múltiples formas de violencia relacionadas con la diversidad y las ambigüedades de nuestra época. Para ello, proponemos una investigación de los elementos de la teología bíblica, principalmente la teología paulina, que serán examinados a la luz de la Mentalidad de Frontera de Gloria Anzaldúa. Esta será una investigación explicativa y documental en la que las fuentes se analizarán cualitativamente mediante métodos de la literatura comparada. Se espera que, al finalizar, la propuesta de Anzaldúa contribuya a la comprensión de la teología paulina como una propuesta de Teología de Frontera que funcione como episteme de resistencia.

    Chapter 1: Prologue: Half the World Away -- Chapter 2: Global IR: A Paradigm? No, a Research Programme -- Chapter 3: Global IR: A Glimpse of Somewhere? No, of Anywhere -- Chapter 4: Global IR: An Agenda of One or Many? No, of One and Many -- Chapter 5: Epilogue: A Passage Across the Three Worlds. The Global IR research programme promulgates a borderless ecology of cultures that has only an inside without an outside. This borderless ecology of cultures reinvents the human condition (including the condition of ‘the international’) as perpetually interconnected at the level of consciousness. While Western-centric IR theories depend on (neo-)Kantian philosophies to emphasize the time-space bounded identities of human beings living in visibly divided phenomenal worlds, the de-Kantian philosophies of the Global IR research programme – exemplified by the Tianxia, Advaita, and Nishida Kitaro’s Buddhism-inspired theories – recuperate the temporally-spatially indivisible phenomenal-noumenal flow of human life, thereby facilitating back-and-forth movement between the Westdominated ‘one world’ and the non-West-embodied ‘many worlds’. The central objective of the book is to demonstrate how this back-and-forth movement offers opportunities to conceive of and found a new world order that recognizes the temporally-spatially indivisible human condition on earth. The book delineates a set of guiding principles to promote an innovative practice of theory-building and policy-making that transcends the geo-centric limitations of knowledgeproduction and knowledge-application, thereby establishing the futuristic foundation of the Global IR research programme. Deepshikha Shahi is Associate Professor of Politics and International Relations at the O. P. Jindal Global University, India.

    How does the interplay of geography and political-economic forces affect the shape of nations? This paper presents a quantitative framework for characterizing the equilibrium evolution of national boundaries in a world with a rich geography. The framework delivers simple equilibrium conditions based on the efficient transportation of resources that arise from disparate political economic micro-foundations. I characterize the existence, uniqueness, and efficiency of the equilibrium and provide a simple algorithm for its calculation. When combined with detailed spatial geography data from Europe, the equilibrium conditions well approximate observed borders, and the framework is able to successfully predict the evolution of national boundaries and resulting conflict over the past millennia. Finally, I apply the framework to ask how the changing spatial distribution of resources arising from climate change may alter European borders in the future, finding that the Crimean peninsula and surrounding area is especially susceptible

    Der vorliegende Band enthält Beiträge zur Problematik der Grenzen und ihrer Erscheinungsformen im Modus literarischer Texte. Die Narrative der Grenze betreffen sowohl ihre historische und territoriale Form als auch den Aspekt ihrer Relativität und ihres Konstruktionscharakters. Im Fokus stehen Schriftsteller:innen als Reisende, Grenzgänger:innen, Migrant:innen, Exilant:innen sowie entsprechende literarische Figuren. Grenzen erscheinen in ihrer ambivalenten Struktur als unüberwindbar und schutzbietend, aber auch durchlässig und offen. Dabei wird der Abschottungswille gegen das Andere und Fremde als Energieverlust kritisiert und gleichzeitig die Notwendigkeit der Grenzen im ethischen Sinne unterstrichen. Die Autor:innen heben die Aspekte der räumlichen, sprachlichen oder zeitlichen Grenzüberschreitungen sowie die Überschreitung der Text- und Gattungsgrenzen hervor. This volume features contributions addressing the issues of borders and their manifestations in literary texts. Border narratives refer to different aspects of the border – its historical and territorial form, its relativity and the very nature of this construct. At the centre there are authors – as travellers, borders crossers, migrants, exiles– and corresponding literary figures. In their ambivalent structure, borders appear as insurmountable and protective, but also permeable and open entities. The collected texts criticise the will to isolate oneself against the other and foreign elements as a loss of energy, but also stress the ethical necessity of borders.     "The frontier-the mythical idea of a geographical borderline moving further and further West across the North American continent-has shaped American science fiction television since its very beginnings. Television series have long adapted the frontier myth to outer space and have explored American Wests in the future. This work takes a deeper look at the futuristic frontiers within series including Star Trek, Firefly, Terra Nova, Defiance and The 100, revealing how they rethink colonialism, the environment, spaces of risk and utopian/dystopian worlds. By harnessing forms of speculation and the post-apocalyptic imagination, these series engage with problems and risks of the present, reaching from the legacies of colonialism to climate change and the increasing integration of humans and technologies. In doing so, these series question the very idea of borders and reshape cultural binaries such as Self/Other, wilderness/civilization, city/nature, human/non-human and utopia/dystopia in novel ways that explore how spaces are created in the 21st century"--
