    The Grail is one of the most enduring literary motifs in publishing history. In spite of an ever-changing world, the reading public has maintained a fascination for this enigmatic object, as well as the various adventures and characters associated with it. But the nature and reception of the Grail have not remained static. Thanks to the fact that the first known author of a Grail story, Chrétien de Troyes, died c.1180-90 before completing his tale and revealing the meaning of the Grail, authors and publishers across history have reimagined, reinterpreted and re-packaged Grail literature so as to appeal to the developing tastes and interests of their target audiences. This book analyses the developing publication practices associated with French Grail literature in medieval and Renaissance France. Arguing for pre-print book production as constituting an early incarnation of a publishing trade, it discusses such matters as the disclosure of authorship and patronage, and the writing and formatting of blurbs, as well as tactics of compilation as production techniques that bear evidence of common commercial motivations between pre- and post-print publication. The distinctive investigation of manuscript and early-print evidence brings medieval and early-modern publishers and their concepts of both product and market into focus. Leah Tether is Reader in Medieval Literature and Digital Cultures, and Co-Director of the Centre for Medieval Studies at the University of Bristol. She is the author of The Continuations of Chrétien's Perceval: Content and Construction, Extension and Ending (D.S. Brewer, 2012)

    Le Graal entre en littérature avec Chrétien de Troyes à la fin du XIIe siècle. Il est adapté en allemand entre 1200 et 1210 par Wolfram von E'chenbach. Dans les deux cas, le Graal n'a rien de chrétien. C'est Robert de Boron qui vers 1200 est le premier à le christianiser. À partir de là vont se développer dans le monde germanique deux traditions, l'une « laïque » qui sera exploitée au profit d'idéologies du pouvoir, médiévale ou moderne, et l'autre « religieuse et chrétienne » qui est une glorification de la Passion du Christ. Une rupture s'opère ensuite avec Wagner qui confère au mythe un sens personnel, nouveau, avant qu'il ne soit utilisé, après la seconde guerre mondiale, pour illustrer la désillusion face au monde moderne.

    "Die interdisziplinäre Studie zum Text-Bild-Verhältnis geht der Frage nach, wie der Ausdruck der "vremde" in den illuminierten Handschriften des Parzival Wolframs von Eschenbach konnotiert ist. Die sprachliche Untersuchung ausgewählter Textzeugen (Cgm 19, cpg 339 und Cod. AA 91) gibt Aufschluss über die Semantik der "Fremde" zwischen der Mitte des 13. und der zweiten Hälfte des 15. Jh. Die Bildanalyse widmet sich den zeitgenössischen stereotypen Vorstellungen von "vremde" und zeigt z.B. auf welche Weise Feirefiz als "heide" dargestellt ist. Weiterhin wird erkennbar, wie bildgestalterische Mittel quasi rhetorisch zur visuellen Umsetzung mit den semantischen Teilbedeutungen der "vremde" beitragen. Das reicht von inhaltlichen dargestellten Details -- etwa wenn Cundrie einen Eberzahn erhält -- bis hin zu formalen Gestaltungelementen wie Farbe oder Bildaufteilung. Die Untersuchung trägt zur Forschungdsdiskussion bebilderter Handschriften bei und plädiert für die Untersuchung eines Codex als Gesamtwerk. Textuelle und bildliche Inhalte sind für die Wahrnehmung und Interpretation durch den Betrachter ebenso relevant wie die Schrift, die Seitengestaltung und die gesamte Materialität"-- "Each extant illustrated manuscript of Parzival represents a unique reading, and each image gives the reader new perspectives on the text. The study examines the use of the expression vremde (foreign) along with a comparison of three images from three manuscripts (Cgm19, Cod. AA91 and cpg 339).     "Die interdisziplinäre Studie zum Text-Bild-Verhältnis geht der Frage nach, wie der Ausdruck der "vremde" in den illuminierten Handschriften des Parzival Wolframs von Eschenbach konnotiert ist. Die sprachliche Untersuchung ausgewählter Textzeugen (Cgm 19, cpg 339 und Cod. AA 91) gibt Aufschluss über die Semantik der "Fremde" zwischen der Mitte des 13. und der zweiten Hälfte des 15. Jh. Die Bildanalyse widmet sich den zeitgenössischen stereotypen Vorstellungen von "vremde" und zeigt z.B. auf welche Weise Feirefiz als "heide" dargestellt ist. Weiterhin wird erkennbar, wie bildgestalterische Mittel quasi rhetorisch zur visuellen Umsetzung mit den semantischen Teilbedeutungen der "vremde" beitragen. Das reicht von inhaltlichen dargestellten Details -- etwa wenn Cundrie einen Eberzahn erhält -- bis hin zu formalen Gestaltungelementen wie Farbe oder Bildaufteilung. Die Untersuchung trägt zur Forschungdsdiskussion bebilderter Handschriften bei und plädiert für die Untersuchung eines Codex als Gesamtwerk. Textuelle und bildliche Inhalte sind für die Wahrnehmung und Interpretation durch den Betrachter ebenso relevant wie die Schrift, die Seitengestaltung und die gesamte Materialität"-- "Each extant illustrated manuscript of Parzival represents a unique reading, and each image gives the reader new perspectives on the text. The study examines the use of the expression vremde (foreign) along with a comparison of three images from three manuscripts (Cgm19, Cod. AA91 and cpg 339).     Le Graal entre en littérature avec Chrétien de Troyes à la fin du XIIe siècle. Il est adapté en allemand entre 1200 et 1210 par Wolfram von E'chenbach. Dans les deux cas, le Graal n'a rien de chrétien. C'est Robert de Boron qui vers 1200 est le premier à le christianiser. À partir de là vont se développer dans le monde germanique deux traditions, l'une « laïque » qui sera exploitée au profit d'idéologies du pouvoir, médiévale ou moderne, et l'autre « religieuse et chrétienne » qui est une glorification de la Passion du Christ. Une rupture s'opère ensuite avec Wagner qui confère au mythe un sens personnel, nouveau, avant qu'il ne soit utilisé, après la seconde guerre mondiale, pour illustrer la désillusion face au monde moderne.
