"This exhibition focuses on the many painters who were beguiled by Brittany during the latter half of the nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries. With works that focus on Brittany's landscapes, customs, and history, what each artist sought and discerned in this 'foreign realm' is explored. In addition to featuring Western artists, primarily French, the exhibition for the first time brings to light works by Japanese-born painters who traveled to France during Japan's late Meiji to Taisho periods and found their way to Brittany. With around thirty Japanese museums and private collections and two overseas museums making works available on loan, the exhibition assembles 160 or so pieces encompassing paintings, drawings, prints, and posters, literary works, guidebooks, picture postcards sent by artists, and even the trunks they used to carry their possessions when traveling to Brittany."--Preface
