    This book is rooted in the author’s experience as an interviewer and researcher in the Mauthausen Survivors Documentation Project – the biggest European oral history project devoted to a single Nazi concentration camp system, realized in the years 2002/2003 at the University of Vienna. Over 850 Mauthausen survivors have been recorded worldwide, more than 160 of them in Poland, and over 30 by the author. The work offers an in-depth analysis of Polish survivors’ accounts, sensitive to both, form and content of these stories, as well as their social and cultural framing. The analysis is accompanied by an interpretation of (Polish) camp experiences in a broader biographical and historical perspective. The book is an interpretive journey from camp experiences, through the survivors’ memories, to narratives recalling them − and backwards.

    This paper discusses the way the repetition of formulas and expressions are treated by the various witnesses to the text of 1 Samuel 3:4–10, the narrative of Samuel’s calling. The paper focuses on the differences between MT, LXX and the Lucianic Text. Repetitions in the text often induce the trained text-critic to check for haplographies, dittographies, homoioteleutons, and homoioarctons among the witnesses, but it will be shown that textual decisions require attention not only to phenomena common to textual copying and transmission, such as textual accidents, but also to literary and narrative elements, especially in a book such as Samuel where different Hebrew forms circulated in the past. It is possible, in case of repetitions, to find in some witnesses a narrative interest in seeing an order or prediction be enacted or fulfilled precisely as foretold.

    The discipline of cognitive narratology applies insights of cognitive linguistics to narrative analysis. This study seeks to demonstrate the value of cognitive narratology by exploring the role of the reader and the extent of the reader’s knowledge in constructing characters. While traditional narrative criticism often limits itself to the world of the text, cognitive narratology recognizes that the reader’s knowledge from other texts and the real world also contributes to the construction of characters. This study will show that the extent of the reader’s literary and social knowledge of a text affects the construction of characters. As a case study, we will examine the calling of Peter in the canonical Gospels and show how four readers with varying degrees of knowledge will arrive at different constructions of Peter’s character.

    The use of a narrative imperfect in Am 7:10-17 after 7:1-9 and the abrupt shift to 8:1-3 frequently compelled critics to determine its literary form. For diachronic studies defining classifications include ‘third-party report’ and ‘apophthegma’. By contrast, synchronic studies emphasize the contextual integration of Am 7:10-17 and concentrate on a narrative analysis. Within this focus it is striking, that the passage is often associated with a ‘drama’ but without assessing the methodological ramifications of such a claim. The present article takes this ‘synchronic gap’ up and relates it to approaches to view drama as a possible genre for prophetic books. In doing so, a reading of Am 7:10-17 as part of a narrator-mediated discourse using a dramatic mode shows that the passage can be deemed an entrance with three speeches integrated into the wider context of 7:1-8:3. Particularly the classification of 7:10a, 12aα, 14aα as narrator’s discourse using a dramatic mode makes this claim plausible.

    This article illustrates the importance of considering the narratological implications of textual variations in the Septuagint, the Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible. While these differences have traditionally concerned textual critics, this study argues for their importance in the field of narrative analysis as well. Using the divergent readings in 1 Samuel 10.5 and 1 Sam. 13.1–4 as a case study, the article analyzes the potential meaning and implications of these textual variants by showing how the different readings can offer new perspectives and uncharted avenues of interpretation, expanding our understanding of the Greek text as a distinct literary work. By bridging textual criticism and narrative analysis, this article aims to contribute to a deeper appreciation of the narratological dimensions inherent in the Septuagint and highlight its significance in the broader field of biblical narratology.
