    In this new verse translation of one of the great works of French literature, Dorothy Gilbert captures the vivacity, wit, and grace of the first known Arthurian romance. Erec and Enide is the story of the quest and coming of age of a young knight, an illustrious member of Arthur's court, who must learn to balance the demands of a masculine public life—tests of courage, skill, adaptability, and mature judgment—with the equally urgent demands of the private world of love and marriage. We see his wife, Enide, develop as an exemplar of chivalry in the female, not as an Amazon, but as a brave, resolute, and wise woman. Composed ca. 1170, Erec and Enide masterfully combines elements of Celtic legend, classical and ecclesiastical learning, and French medieval culture and ideals.In choosing to write in rhymed octosyllabic couplets–Chrétien's prosodic pattern–Dorothy Gilbert has tried to reproduce what so often gets lost in prose or free verse translations: the precise and delicate meter; the rhyme, with its rich possibilities for emphasis, nuance, puns and jokes; and the "mantic power" implicit in proper names. The result will enable the scholar who cannot read Old French, the student of literature, and the general reader to gain a more sensitive and immediate understanding of the form and spirit of Chrétien's poetry, and to appreciate the more Chrétien's great contribution to European literature

    Any conceptualisation of evil, arguably, has to empower us to resist or transform it in our lived worlds. The latter concern motivates this paper much more than a thorough analysis of evil itself. Drawing on Jewish and Christian thought, I tentatively consider evil as resulting from (or, being exacerbated by) the incomplete or failed cultivation of the humane. Along this line, evil is the opposite of humanity; it is the antihuman, the subhuman (Buber), or the demonic (Heschel). Gratuitous violence, hatred, resentment, and malice manifest this dark ‘power’ of evil. In the aforementioned traditions, peace and justice are conceived as being dependent on the inner order or unity of the soul. Conversely, iniquity - as the manifestation of evil - in the world reflects conflicts or disorders in individual souls (‘selves’). Hence the need to constitute one’s personhood. Such continuous creation takes place through genuine human encounters, where and when love, friendship, and gratitude are allowed to unfold themselves. These ‘dispositions’ are conceived as counterweights to evil. I will work out this argument, but also briefly examine how education, rural and urban planning, economic and political ‘systems’ can either breed or curtail evil.

    It is said in several contemporary theologies that in acting on their proclivities, homosexuals act as a law unto themselves rather than subordinate their desires to God's law. In linking homosexuality with the notion of a selfish individualism, these theologies cast homosexuals as incapable of exercising community-building love. They sustain a reductive model of the human person that issues from an anxiety about the presence of the “secular” ideology of individualism in theology. I suggest that we rehabilitate a vision of love based on a re-reading of the Apostle Paul's understanding of love as God-given and life-giving in 1 Corinthians and Romans, and use it as the basis for a revitalized vision of being human. Guided by Martin Luther's hermeneutic and contemporary thought, this vision recognizes the interdependent relationship between self- and other-concern, and proposes that we prioritize love over reductive knowledge claims in our theologies.

    "Because I am not silent," George Oppen wrote, "the poems are bad." What does it mean for the goodness of an art to depend upon its disappearance? In Being Numerous, Oren Izenberg offers a new way to understand the divisions that organize twentieth-century poetry. He argues that the most important conflict is not between styles or aesthetic politics, but between poets who seek to preserve or produce the incommensurable particularity of experience by making powerful objects, and poets whose radical commitment to abstract personhood seems altogether incompatible with experience--and with poems. Reading across the apparent gulf that separates traditional and avant-garde poets, Izenberg reveals the common philosophical urgency that lies behind diverse forms of poetic difficulty--from Yeats's esoteric symbolism and Oppen's minimalism and silence to O'Hara's joyful slightness and the Language poets' rejection of traditional aesthetic satisfactions. For these poets, what begins as a practical question about the conduct of literary life--what distinguishes a poet or group of poets?--ends up as an ontological inquiry about social life: What is a person and how is a community possible? In the face of the violence and dislocation of the twentieth century, these poets resist their will to mastery, shy away from the sensual richness of their strongest work, and undermine the particularity of their imaginative and moral visions--all in an effort to allow personhood itself to emerge as an undeniable fact making an unrefusable claim.

Damit rückt er erstens die Liebe als zentrale Prinzipfunktion, die die Philosophie von Plotin, Proklos, Dionysios, Eriugena, Cusanus und Fichte trägt, in den Fokus. Zweitens demonstriert er, dass die metaphysischen Spekulationen des Neuplatonismus und Fichtes nicht bloß in einzelnen Aspekten übereinstimmen. Vielmehr muss man von tiefgreifenden systematischen Parallelen sprechen, die zu verstehen helfen, wieso der in der Forschung oft kolportierte Abgrund zwischen vor- und nachkantischer Philosophie irreführend ist. Diese Thesen werden anhand des häufig missverstandenen Konzeptes metaphysischer Transzendenz veranschaulicht. Max Rohstock examines the metaphysics of the Neoplatonic tradition and J. G. Fichte. Firstly, he finds love to be the central principle that grounds the philosophy of Plotinus, Proclus, Dionysius, Eriugena, Cusanus and Fichte. Secondly, he demonstrates that the metaphysical speculations of Neoplatonism and Fichte do not merely coincide in certain aspects. Rather, they demonstrate profound systematic parallels that help to understand why the often-proclaimed abyss between pre- and post-Kantian philosophy is misleading. Both theses are justified on the basis of the often-misunderstood concept of metaphysical transcendence.

    Goethe’s lyrical works had a major impact upon the emergence of the modern discourse of love. Along with the texts of his creative period in Weimar, the poems of his Leipzig, Strasbourg, and Frankfurt years represent an ever-changing poetics of love that competed with contemporary perspectives from the Enlightenment to Late Romanticism. Goethe’s formal innovations over the course of his love poetry, often accompanied by intercultural references, have proven to be singular.

It suggests that the supposedly frivolous Belleau is a poet-doctor aiming to cure the reader of melancholy and to come to the aid of a war-torn France.

    The Apartment of Tragic Appliances, named as a finalist for a 2013 Lambda Literary Award, is a literal place in which a hapless, portable dishwasher "heats residue only to reimagine cleanliness as an art project," a recalcitrant microwave neglects to heat, and a refrigerator dies an inconvenient, bulky death. It is also that psychic space in which we consider our loneliness, our wandering hearts, our unpacked boxes, our vulgar desires.In Queer Optimism: Lyric Personhood and Other Felicitous Persuasions (Minnesota, 2007), Michael Snediker worked "in the interests of felicity" to undermine the ways in which queer theory customarily privileges shame and melancholy. Here, in his first full-length collection of poetry, he undertakes a similar upending of expectation, acknowledging "gay sadness" but refusing to fall fully under its sway. The demi-tragedies of daily life are recounted by a voice that is variously wistful, giddy, bawdy, silly, and tart. Es gewährt daher einen Blick auf das Verhältnis dieser verschiedenen Formen sozialer Verbindlichkeit zueinander. Weil das Versprechen seine eigene Wirkung aber nie gewährleisten kann, sondern immer voraussetzen muss, wirft es in allen Anwendungsfeldern die Frage auf, wie Bindung gelingt. Dies untersuchen die hier versammelten Beiträge an der Schnittstelle von Recht und Literatur. To commit oneself by way of giving one´s word is a basic condition of social life. Promise is at work in morality, in law, but also in love. It therefore provides a view of the relationship between these different forms of social commitment. Because a promise can never guarantee its own effect, but must always suppose it, it raises the question of how binding through self-commitment can succeed in all its various fields of application. The contributions making up this volume examine this question at the interface of law and literature.

The Greeks and the Romans certainly did. But far from enjoying this romantic moment carefree, they saw it as a cruel experience and an infection. Then what are the symptoms of falling in love? Are there any remedies? Any form of immunity? This book explores the conception of love (erôs) as a physical, emotional, and mental disease, a social-ethical disorder, and a literary unorthodoxy in Greek and Latin literature. Through illustrative case studies, the contributors to this volume examine two distinct, yet historically and poetically interrelated traditions of 'pathological love': lovesickness as/similar to disease and deviant sexuality described in nosologic terms. The chapters represent a wide range of genres (lyric poetry, philosophy, oratory, comedy, tragedy, elegy, satire, novel, and of course medical literature) and a fascinating synthesis of methodologies and approaches, including textual criticism, comparative philology, narratology, performance theory, and social history. The book closes with an anthology of Greek and Latin passages on pathological erôs. Die Studie geht der Neuordnung des Gefühlswissens auf der Epochenschwelle in einem Querschnitt durch die Literatur um 1830 nach. Anhand von Lektüren der frühen Lyrik Heinrich Heines, der Prosaschriften des Jungen Deutschland und der Dramen Georg Büchners fragt sie nach den ästhetischen Formen, den sozialen Einsätzen und vor allem den wissenshistorischen Anschlüssen, in denen sich die Umgestaltung der Passionen poetisch manifestiert. Damit erweitert sie die Literatur- und die Kulturgeschichte der Liebe um eine wesentliche Station.

    Mit diesem Band legt Ernst A. Schmidt seine Forschungen über »das Leere« in Antike und Früher Neuzeit vor. Schmidt behandelt zunächst die Atomistik von Leukipp bis Lukrez, die Porentheorie von Empedokles bis Heron von Alexandria sowie die Theorie des Philoponos. Dem schließt sich eine Untersuchung zur Rezeption der antiken Konzepte in der frühneuzeitlichen Physik (Galilei, Gassendi, Henry More) an. Im Anhang bringt Schmidt eine kritische Darstellung des antiken Atomismus in drei Texten des 18. Jahrhunderts, bei Polignac, Wieland und Le Sage. Es gibt bislang keine vergleichbar umfassende und quellengesättigte Arbeit zum Thema. Wer sich für »das Leere« interessiert oder nach Quellen sucht, wird von Schmidt bestens versorgt.
