    Subtitling films in another language becomes especially complex when the original language deviates from its standard form. Films that feature non-standard pronunciation, dialects or other varieties of language, especially when juxtaposed with more standard uses, are said to display «linguistic variation». As language use is central to characters’ identities and to a film’s plot, it is essential to retain the source language (SL) specificity as fully as possible in the target language (TL) subtitles so the target audience can experience the film as authentically as possible. Given its considerable difficulty, subtitling in this manner is often advised against, avoided or, when attempted, subjected to considerable criticism. This book focuses on a collection of British and French films selected for the range of approaches that they adopt in portraying linguistic variation. Each chapter explores the challenges posed by the subtitling of such linguistic difference in the given films and the corresponding solutions offered by their subtitlers. Drawing on these findings and referring to contemporary thinking in the field of translation studies, this book argues that with insight and skill, linguistic variation can be preserved in film subtitles. «Ellender’s book on subtitling films is an important contribution to a trending field in translation studies.»(Jenny Brumme, Target 28/2016)...

    This collection of articles offers a comprehensive overview of some of the most current research approaches found in the field of audiovisual translation (AVT) and media accessibility across Europe. The authors, well-known experts in the field of AVT, reflect on new challenges and look into potential avenues for investigation in professional practices like subtitling, surtitling, dubbing and voiceover as well as audio description (AD), subtitling for the deaf and the hard-of-hearing (SDH) and audio subtitling. The book is divided into four sections. The first part discusses some of the cultural challenges encountered by professionals when dubbing and subtitling audiovisual productions and when surtitling live events. The second part focuses on AVT training, particularly on the teaching and learning of voiceover and subtitling. The third section is dedicated to AD and provides a detailed overview of some of the latest developments taking place in this area.     An increasing number of contributions have appeared in recent years on the subject of Audiovisual Translation (AVT), particularly in relation to dubbing and subtitling. The broad scope of this branch of Translation Studies is challenging because it brings together diverse disciplines, including film studies, translatology, semiotics, linguistics, applied linguistics, cognitive psychology, technology and ICT. This volume addresses issues relating to AVT research and didactics. The first section is dedicated to theoretical aspects in order to stimulate further debate and encourage progress in research-informed teaching. The second section focuses on a less developed area of research in the field of AVT: its potential use in foreign language pedagogy. This collection of articles is intended to create a discourse on new directions in AVT and foreign language learning. The book begins with reflections on wider methodological issues, advances to a proposed model of analysis for colloquial speech, touches on more ‘niche’ aspects of AVT (e.g. surtitling), progresses to didactic applications in foreign language pedagogy and learning at both linguistic and cultural levels, and concludes with a practical proposal for the use of AVT in foreign language classes. An interview with a professional subtitler draws the volume to a close.

    Die Untertitelung erfreut sich zunehmender Beliebtheit in der Forschung. Der Hauptgrund liegt in ihrer multidimensionalen Natur, da Untertitelung (als Prozess) und Untertitel (als Endprodukt) als interlingual, intralingual und intersemiotisch zu betrachten sind. Die Beiträge des Sammelbandes untersuchen die deutsch- und die italienischsprachige Untertitelung in ihren vielfältigen Aspekten: von der Art des untertitelten Produkts (wie Kinofilm, Fernsehfilm, Theaterstück) und der Sprachrichtung (wie Deutsch–Italienisch, Italienisch–Deutsch, Deutsch–Deutsch) bis zu spezifischen Aspekten des Untertitelns (wie die Übersetzung von Realia). Es handelt sich um das erste Werk, das spezifisch die Untertitelung (und nicht nur die Synchronisation) im Deutschen und im Italienischen in den Mittelpunkt stellt.     Translation quality assessment (TQA) is a growing topic in the field of Translation Studies. The present book focuses mainly on the translation quality assessment in Persian subtitles of English movies as an almost ignored topic in Translation Studies. The aim is to propose criteria for the evaluation of subtitles. To reach this goal, the author divides the case studies of the present research into two subcategories, i.e., musical movies and non-musical ones. The base for the quality assessment of musical movies is the Semiotic Model of TQA for poetry applied to three movie subtitles, «Anastasia, «Sweeney Todd» and «Les Misérables». This leads to a tentative model for the evaluation of Persian subtitles of English musical movies. The second part of the book focuses mainly on the omission of the interpersonal elements in Persian subtitles of English movies using appraisal theory as the theoretical framework. The theory is applied to the subtitles of two movies, «Prisoners» and «Houdini» leading to criteria for the evaluation of Persian subtitles of English movies.

    Historically a dubbing country, Germany is not well-known for subtitled productions. But while dubbing is predominant in Germany, more and more German viewers prefer original and subtitled versions of their favourite shows and films. Conventional subtitling, however, can be seen as a strong intrusion into the original image that can not only disrupt but also destroy the director’s intended shot composition and focus points. Long eye movements between focus points and subtitles decrease the viewer’s information intake, and especially German audiences, who are often not used to subtitles, seem to prefer to wait for the next subtitle instead of looking back up again. Furthermore, not only the placement, but also the overall design of conventional subtitles can disturb the image composition – for instance titles with a weak contrast, inappropriate typeface or irritating colour system. So should it not, despite the translation process, be possible to preserve both image and sound as far as possible? Especially given today’s numerous artistic and technical possibilities and the huge amount of work that goes into the visual aspects of a film, taking into account not only special effects, but also typefaces, opening credits and text-image compositions. A further development of existing subtitling guidelines would not only express respect towards the original film version but also the translator’s work.

    Historically a dubbing country, Germany is not well-known for subtitled productions. But while dubbing is predominant in Germany, more and more German viewers prefer original and subtitled versions of their favourite shows and films. Conventional subtitling, however, can be seen as a strong intrusion into the original image that can not only disrupt but also destroy the director's intended shot composition and focus points. Long eye movements between focus points and subtitles decrease the viewer's information intake, and especially German audiences, who are often not used to subtitles, seem to prefer to wait for the next subtitle instead of looking back up again. Furthermore, not only the placement, but also the overall design of conventional subtitles can disturb the image composition - for instance titles with a weak contrast, inappropriate typeface or irritating colour system. So should it not, despite the translation process, be possible to preserve both image and sound as far as possible? Especially given today's numerous artistic and technical possibilities and the huge amount of work that goes into the visual aspects of a film, taking into account not only special effects, but also typefaces, opening credits and text-image compositions. A further development of existing subtitling guidelines would not only express respect towards the original film version but also the translator's work

    Translation, accessibility and the viewing experience of foreign, deaf and blind audiences has long been a neglected area of research within film studies. The same applies to the film industry, where current distribution strategies and exhibition platforms severely underestimate the audience that exists for foreign and accessible cinema. Translated and accessible versions are usually produced with limited time, for little remuneration, and traditionally involving zero contact with the creative team. Against this background, this book presents accessible filmmaking as an alternative approach, integrating translation and accessibility into the filmmaking process through collaboration between translators and filmmakers. The book introduces a wide notion of media accessibility and the concepts of the global version, the dubbing effect and subtitling blindness. It presents scientific evidence showing how translation and accessibility can impact the nature and reception of a film by foreign and sensory-impaired audiences, often changing the film in a way that filmmakers are not always aware of. The book includes clips from the award-winning film Notes on Blindness on the Routledge Translation Studies Portal, testimonies from filmmakers who have adopted this approach, and a presentation of the accessible filmmaking workflow and a new professional figure: the director of accessibility and translation. This is an essential resource for advanced students and scholars working in film, audiovisual translation and media accessibility, as well as for those (accessible) filmmakers who are not only concerned about their original viewers, but also about those of the foreign and accessible versions of their films, who are often left behind

    La traducción audiovisual (TAV) es una disciplina reciente que ha alcanzado su máximo desarrollo durante el siglo XXI. Esta modalidad traductora se hace, si cabe, más necesaria en un contexto como el español, dado el considerable aumento de la producción audiovisual en los los últimos años: la afluencia de materiales audiovisuales dedicados al doblaje y el incremento de estos productos para un público que cada vez consume más televisión y cine en versión original (fundamentalmente en lengua inglesa) con subtítulos en castellano. A este auge se une la concienciación de las autoridades españolas para que este mercado audiovisual se abra al espectador con discapacidad auditiva (subtítulos para sordos) y visual (audio descripción para ciegos). Así, el libro presenta un análisis pormenorizado de las cuestiones lingüísticas e instrumentales que determinan las principales modalidades de la traducción audiovisual junto con las prioridades, restricciones y las técnicas más comunes, además de información relevante tanto para estudiantes como para profesores e investigadores interesados en este ámbito de los Estudios de Traducción.
