    Écrits fantômes est le fruit des travaux entrepris par Vincent Platini pour sa thèse d’habilitation à diriger les recherches. Après plus de quatre ans d’enquête dans différents fonds d’archives judiciaires en France, il en a tiré un corpus de centaines de lettres de suicides écrites entre 1700 et 1948. C’est un ouvrage pionnier, sans équivalent en France ou à l’international. L’auteur présente chaque message posthume par un résumé des circonstances ayant précédé le passage à l’acte, faisant valoir la qualité formelle et littéraire des courriers, des exercices de style funèbres permettant des coups de force et suscitant par leur urgence des émotions diverses. Ce recueil illustré de photos, organisé en dix cercles et une postface, ouvre un nouvel horizon au champ épistolaire, autant du côté des historiens (la mort volontaire ayant été peu étudiée) que des amateurs d’art brut scriptural. Objets d’un art de soi funèbre, elles méritaient d’entrer en littérature

Sebastian Köthe erzählt die Geschichte von Widerstand und Folter anhand der Zeugnisse der Gefangenen. Dazu zählen Analysen der Knotenpunkte Isolation und Beziehungsstiftung, Entzeitlichung und Verzeitlichung, Hungerstreik und Zwangsernährung, Wasserfolter und Überleben, Gefangenschaft und Suizid. Die zeithistorische Rekonstruktion führt zur Diagnose einer Folter-Kultur, an der Politik wie Künste teilhaben. In einer solchen Kultur wird Folter einerseits ausgestellt, um ganze Bevölkerungsgruppen zu bedrohen und die Exekutive zu ermächtigen, und andererseits verheimlicht und verharmlost, um Täter zu schützen

    "Writing against the prevailing narrativization of suicide in terms of why it happened, Whitehead turns instead to the questions of when, how, and where, calling attention to suicide's materiality as well as its materialization. By turns provocative and deeply affecting, this book brings suicide into conversation with the critical medical humanities, extending beyond individual pathology and the medical institution to think about subjective and social perspectives, and to open up the various sites, scenes and interactions with which suicide is associated. Suicide is related forward from the point of death, rather than taking a retrospective view. Combining critical and textual analysis with personal reflection based on her own experience of her sister's suicide, Whitehead examines the days, months, and years following a death by suicide.     We study the mental health of PhD students in Sweden using comprehensive administrative data on prescriptions, specialist care visits, hospitalizations, and causes of death. We find about 7% (5%) of PhD students receive medication or diagnosis for depression (anxiety) in a given year. These prevalence rates are less than one-third of the corresponding survey-based prevalence rates reported in the literature, and even after adjusting for difference in methodology, 44% (72%) of the prevalence rates reported in the literature. We also document PhD students' mental health significantly worsens relative to their peers after they have entered the program. This deterioration is consistent with doctoral studies having a negative causal effect on mental health.

    In 1953, a teenage girl, Jeanne Saré, jumps in front of a train at the Gare du Nord station. She leaves behind writings that to some are unreadable, but to others tell universal, unspoken truths about the lives and struggles of women. When published in the 1970s, her work triggers a rash of copycat suicides. It is hastily withdrawn from sale and eventually forgotten about. Then, in 2004, two women from opposite corners of the globe - Amsterdam and Sydney - rediscover Jeanne Saré's book and set out to discover who the author was and what happened to her. Women across the ages have attached their own stories to Saré's, often with devastating results, but the truth about her may be even stranger than the fictions they have invented

    Écrits fantômes est le fruit des travaux entrepris par Vincent Platini pour sa thèse d’habilitation à diriger les recherches. Après plus de quatre ans d’enquête dans différents fonds d’archives judiciaires en France, il en a tiré un corpus de centaines de lettres de suicides écrites entre 1700 et 1948. C’est un ouvrage pionnier, sans équivalent en France ou à l’international. L’auteur présente chaque message posthume par un résumé des circonstances ayant précédé le passage à l’acte, faisant valoir la qualité formelle et littéraire des courriers, des exercices de style funèbres permettant des coups de force et suscitant par leur urgence des émotions diverses. Ce recueil illustré de photos, organisé en dix cercles et une postface, ouvre un nouvel horizon au champ épistolaire, autant du côté des historiens (la mort volontaire ayant été peu étudiée) que des amateurs d’art brut scriptural. Objets d’un art de soi funèbre, elles méritaient d’entrer en littérature
