    Acknowledgements List of Figures and Tables Evaluation in Academic English Establishing a Warrant for Research Writing with Attitude Attitude and Field in Academic Writing Prosodies of Attitude Legitimising Space for New Knowledge: Disciplinary Differences References Index Focusing on the introductions to research articles in a variety of disciplines, the author uses appraisal theory to analyze how writers bring together multiple resources to develop their positions in the flow of discourse. It will be most useful for researchers new to appraisal, and to EAP teachers, Appraising Research: Evaluation in Academic Writing makes an important new contribution to our understanding of academic writing in English with a focus is on how published writers take an evaluative stance in the introductions to research articles. Drawing on appraisal theory in systemic functional linguistics, the author analyses whole texts and phases of text to explore comprehensively the ways in which writers bring together a range of resources to develop their positions in the flow of discourse. The detailed application of appraisal theory is carefully and progressively introduced such that the book will be a most useful guide for researchers new to the theory.     Von den sprachanalytischen Forschungsansätzen in verschiedenen Wissenschaftsdisziplinen ausgehend formuliert diese Sprachuntersuchung aus linguistischer Perspektive ein eigenständiges Forschungsprogramm, auf deren Grundlage politische Reden von Theodor Heuss und Konrad Adenauer sowohl synchron als auch diachron (Reden von 1919 und nach 1945) analysiert werden. Ziel der Sprachanalyse ist es, die Funktionsweise politischer Reden transparenter zu machen und den politischen Sprachwandel in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts bei zwei einflußreichen Persönlichkeiten nachzuvollziehen. Die Studie weist an vielfältigen Beispielen nach, daß die spezifisch sprachwissenschaftliche Untersuchungsmethode politischer Sprache Forschungsergebnisse erbringen kann, die Verfahren sozialwissenschaftlicher Disziplinen (Politik- und Geschichtswissenschaft) erweitern können.

    This book offers its readers an overview of recent developments in the theory of legal argumentation written by representatives from various disciplines, including argumentation theory, philosophy of law, logic and artificial intelligence. It presents an overview of contributions representative of different academic and legal cultures, and different continents and countries. The book contains contributions on strategic maneuvering, argumentum ad absurdum, argumentum ad hominem, consequentialist argumentation, weighing and balancing, the relation between legal argumentation and truth, the distinction between the context of discovery and context of justification, and the role of constitutive and regulative rules in legal argumentation. It is based on a selection of papers that were presented in the special workshop on Legal Argumentation organized at the 25th IVR World Congress for Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy held 15-20 August 2011 in Frankfurt, Germany.

Doch wie viele semantische Spuren sind im Klang klassisch-moderner und Neuer Musik tatsächlich haften geblieben? Welche neuartigen Weltbezüge von Klang können jüngere Konzeptästhetiken herstellen? Und was eröffnet ihre analytische Freilegung?Der Band nähert sich diesen Fragen aus musikhistorischen, kunstphilosophischen, gendertheoretischen und postkolonialen Perspektiven und versammelt Fallstudien zu Schönberg, Koechlin, Schulhoff, Schostakowitsch, Schaeffer, Boulez, Rihm sowie zur Konzeptkunst The concept of 'sound' experienced a categorical revaluation in the new discourse of art music. At the same time, semanticity seemed to have become obsolete. But how many semantic traces actually remained in the sound of classical-modern and New Music? Which new kinds of connections to the world of sound can recent conceptual aesthetics produce? And what opens up them up to analytical exposure? This volume approaches these questions from the perspectives of music history, art philosophy, gender theory, and post-colonialism and collects case studies on Schönberg, Koechlin, Schulhoff, Schostakowitsch, Schaeffer, Boulez, and Rihm as well as from conceptual art
