The Mechanics of Human Rights Diplomacy -- 7. Promoting LGBT Human Rights in International Settings -- 8. Case Study: The 2014 US Resolution -- 9. Human Rights Diplomacy: Policy Implications. 'Douglas Janoff draws from his wide-ranging diplomatic career, extensive research and rigorous scholarship to provide a highly engaging and accessible exploration of the mainstreaming, complexities and contradictions of LGBTQ+ advocacy in contemporary Western diplomacy. Janoff's book is a much-needed addition to the expanding field of queer international relations and is a thoughtful and useful contribution both for academic scholars and diplomatic practitioners' —Daniel Conway is Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Relations, University of Westminster, UK This book is the first study of multilateral LGBT human rights diplomacy viewed from the perspective of its practitioners: diplomats, LGBT activists, human rights experts and multilateral specialists. It demonstrates how diplomats and advocates work to promote LGBT rights on the world stage, often using Western constructs of sexual and gender identity. In turn, these efforts have triggered conflict and polarization: opposing states often deploy cultural, religious and moral discourses to minimize LGBT rights as a “legitimate” human right. The author, a seasoned Canadian foreign service officer, human rights negotiator and former community activist and researcher, uses insider perspectives to critically assess both bilateral and multilateral diplomatic engagement on LGBT human rights issues. Janoff’s research involved participation in UN meetings in Geneva and New York and 29 interviews with diplomats, human rights advocates and experts, and representatives from the UN and other inter-governmental organizations. Although LGBT issues have been mainstreamed into many areas of bilateral and multilateral human rights policy, his research found a considerable gap: a coordinated diplomatic and civil society approach is needed to more effectively address ongoing human rights violations against LGBT people around the world. Douglas Victor Janoff was appointed to Canada’s Foreign Service in 2009: his career has included diplomatic postings to Washington, D.C., Afghanistan and Pakistan. He is the author of Pink Blood: Homophobic Violence in Canada (2005) and has a PhD in Canadian Studies from Carleton University, Canada.

Chapter 1. Introduction -- Chapter 2. Empire/Germany: Film and Cinema, Gender and Sexuality -- Chapter 3. Weimar Republic/Germany: Film and Cinema, Gender and Sexuality -- Chapter 4. National Socialism/Germany: Film and Cinema, Gender and Sexuality -- Chatper 5. Concluding Remarks.-. The work in media cultural history is a German history of cinema and film from the 1890s to 1945 with a focus on queer masculinity. Using media studies approaches, the study shows how film as a new medium is constituted through performative re-enactments of spectacular elements from the entertainment and knowledge cultures of the 19th century. In it, bodies, desires and identities are constantly remodelled through the formation of difference. Therefore, male queerness here does not mean the representation of male homosexuality. Rather, it is the dynamic result of complex medial processes, in connection with affects and (self-)cognitions on and off screen. This book is a translation of an original German 1st edition Performative Figuren queerer Männlichkeit by Christiane König, published by J.B.Metzler, imprint of Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature in 2020. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). The author (with the friendly support of Megan Hanson) has subsequently revised the text further in an endeavour to refine the work stylistically. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and on the related technologies to support authors.

"Breathing Aesthetics explores aesthetic responses to our contemporary crisis in breathing. Jean-Thomas Tremblay argues that following a global increase of air pollution in the 1970s, and the continuation of racial and extractive capitalism and imperialism, breathing has emerged as a medium through which biopolitical and necropolitical forces are increasingly experienced. Tremblay thus traces this crisis in breathing through aesthetic practices that foreground breath and respiration, ranging from the music videos of Kate Bush, the video work of Cuban-American artist Ana Mendieta, and documentaries that attempt to capture recently deceased individuals' "last breath." Central to the book's argument is that while everyone breathes, not everyone experiences the risk and cost of breathing evenly. Tremblay focuses on how queer individuals, feminists, and/or artists of color have employed breathing aesthetics to examine ongoing gendered, racialized, sexualized, and imperial traumas."--

Imaginative Resistance, Queer Fiction and the Law develops a novel account of how heteronormative sociolegal orders undermine the well-being of same-sex attracted people, even when these normative orders may fall short of coercively interfering with their choices. Queer well-being is generally studied from psychological perspectives, through the concept of minority stress.' Taking four texts of mid-century Anglo-American queer fiction as illustrative case studies, this book argues - in a philosophical rather than a psychological register - that heteronormativity also affects queer well-being in more intangible ways. The central claim is that heteronormativity shackles the imagination: it curtails no less the imaginative reach of authors of queer fiction, than our ability - engaged as we are in projects of self-authorship - to make-believe personal futures in which same-sex intimacy is brought to bear on our well-being. The book's central claim re-works a concept central to the philosophy of fiction - imaginative resistance' - and puts it into service of questions raised in moral philosophy. Apart from its political and normative implications - strengthening the case for at least some global gay rights - and from challenging some of queer theory's orthodoxies, the book also makes contributions to queer literary history, criticism and biography. Drawing on archival material and personal interviews, fresh readings are offered of Charles Jackson's The Fall of Valor (1946), Gillian Freeman's The Leather Boys (1961), and Patricia Highsmith's The Price of Salt (1952) and The Talented Mr Ripley (1955), making a case for their inclusion in the queer literary canon. Imaginative Resistance, Queer Fiction and the Law will appeal to students of literary criticism, queer sociolegal history, law & literature, the philosophy of fiction, and queer theory, politics and ethics.

Drawing on an ambitious range of interdisciplinary material, including literature, musical treatises and theoretical texts, Music and the Queer Body explores the central place music held for emergent queer identities in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. Canonical writers such as Walter Pater, E. M. Forster and Virginia Woolf are discussed alongside lesser-known figures such as John Addington Symonds, Vernon Lee and Arthur Symons. Engaging with a number of historical case studies, Fraser Riddell pays particular attention to the significance of embodiment in queer musical subcultures and draws on contemporary queer theory and phenomenology to show how writers associate music with shameful, masochistic and anti-humanist subject positions. Ultimately, this study reveals how literary texts at the fin de siècle invest music with queer agency: to challenge or refuse essentialist identities, to facilitate re-conceptions of embodied subjectivity, and to present alternative sensory experiences of space and time. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.
