    Das Buch formuliert ein Konzept des Eingedenkens, das auch in Zukunft noch möglich ist, nämlich dann, wenn es keine Zeitzeug:innen der Verbrechen des Nationalsozialismus mehr gibt, die für ihre Leidensgeschichten und die der Ermordeten einstehen können. Grundlage ist die Dialogphilosophie, die um die Dimension geschichtlich tradierter Schuld erweitert und mit einer an Emmanuel Levinas’ ­Phänomenologie orientierten Ästhetik verbunden wird. Anhand der Dichtung Paul Celans wird aufgezeigt, wie die Praxis der Lektüre den Leser als Zeugen für die anwesende Abwesenheit der Toten und Ermordeten hervorbringt.

    This short essay reflects theologically upon aspects of the enigmatic passage 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12 and contends that while certainly directed at assuaging the eschatological anxieties of the Christian congregation to whom it is addressed, this passage is not, as is often suggested, uninterested in eschatological doctrine as such. Rather, I argued that it is precisely the apocalyptic vision of the victorious and eloquent epiphany of the Lord that funds the peace and hope to which Christians are called in the midst of tumultuous times, and that this orientation is decisive for both faith and theology.

    When working on Rom 9:5, exegetes face a crucial punctuation issue. The challenge consists in determining whether the expression ὁ ὢν ἐπὶ πάντων θεὸς εὐλογητὸς εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας (9:5b) should be read as an independent clause, or, rather, as a relative clause attached with ὁ Χριστὸς τὸ κατὰ σάρκα (9:5a). According to the first option, Paul merely concludes his development with a doxology to God the Father. Following the second line, however, the apostle would make a Christological claim by asserting that Christ is God. The stakes are high since Paul nowhere else in his letters makes a clear claim that Christ is God. This article aims to reconsider this famous crux interpretum in light of ancient colometry, taking into account the principles of colometric structuration described in Greek and Latin rhetorical treatises. Specifically, the author argues that the combined presence of the three so-called Gorgianic figures (parisosis, paromoiosis, and antithesis) supports the case of light punctuation (a comma) between v. 5a and v. 5b, which in turn suggests reading v. 5b as a relative clause that qualifies Christ.

In this study, Ryan Heinsch fills this scholarly gap by considering Paul's allegorical portrayal of the figure of Hagar in Galatians 4:21–31 within the context of ancient Judaism. The author argues that Paul stands in continuity with – rather than against – ancient Judaism in that he, like other Jews in antiquity, portrays Hagar and her descendants as non-Jews.     "The writer of the texts edited and translated here (Miracles of the Virgin; Tract on Abuses; and The Life of Saint Paul, the First Hermit) is often labeled Nigel of Canterbury. Nigel's second-longest poem is the Miracles of the Virgin. These seventeen episodes, divided into three books, are the oldest extant collection of versified miracles of the Virgin in Latin. To go a step further, they count among the earliest such assemblages in any language, including the vernaculars. The stories that make up Nigel's Miracles show that heinous sins-incest, drunkenness, broken vows-can be washed away through devotion to the Virgin. Women and men, old and young, laity and clergy count on Mary to intercede with her son Jesus and forgive every sin, no matter how grave, as long as the sinner shows faith in her mercy. Just as she saves souls, so she repairs bodies. Even without Christ's involvement, she nurses the ill back to health with her milk. Merely displaying her clothing routs armies of foes. Her enemies? Obdurate nonbelievers, in this period often Jews. The tales give voice to the anti-Semitism that was widespread in England as in most of then-contemporary Europe and anticipate the Edict of Expulsion, by which King Edward I expelled all Jews from the country in 1290. Between 1193 and 1194, Nigel composed the letter whose length, tenor, and tone have elicited the editorial title Tractatus contra curiales et officiales clericos (A Tract against Courtiers and Clerical Officials), here, more concisely, Tract on Abuses. The letter resembles a religious pamphlet. It excoriates ecclesiastical abuses, denounces secular activities of prelates and clergy, and summons its episcopal addressee to reform. It expresses sentiments amply supported by scriptural authority, historical sources, contemporary examples, and anecdotes, all graced by classical allusions and an appealing Latin style. The Vita sancti Pauli primi eremitae (The Life of Saint Paul, the First Hermit) comprises 747 rhymed dactylic hexameters. The poem is based on Jerome's prose life of Paul. But, as a poet and author with his own purpose, Nigel departed from his model's plain, straightforward story by amplifying and embellishing descriptions and details in the prose piece. In short, The Life of Saint Paul is more ornate, more didactic, than its prose exemplar"--

    The Apocalyptic Paul is rapidly becoming one of the most influential contemporary approaches to the apostle's letters, and one which has generated its share of controversy. Critiques of the movement have come from all sides: Pauline specialists, scholars of Jewish and Christian apocalyptic literature, and systematic theologians have all raised critical questions. Meanwhile, many have found it a hard conversation to enter, not least because of the contested nature of its key terms and convictions. Non-specialists can find it difficult to sift through these arguments and to become familiar with the history of this movement, its most important contemporary voices, and its key claims. In the first part of this book, New Testament scholar Jamie Davies offers a retrospective introduction to the conversation, charting its development from the turn of the twentieth century to the present, surveying the contemporary situation. In the second part, Davies explores a more prospective account of the challenges and questions that are likely to energize discussion in the future, before offering some contributions to the apocalyptic reading of Paul through an interdisciplinary conversation between the fields of New Testament scholarship, Second Temple Jewish apocalypticism, and Christian systematic theology
