We study the effect of new product introduction on firm value. Using a unique sample on mobile phone handset introduction by 16 major handset manufacturers over 10 years, we distinguish between imitative product introduction and truly innovative product introduction. We find that while most product introduction is imitative, both types of innovation increase firm value. However, truly innovative innovation is found to increase firm value by more than imitative introductions. -- Product innovation ; mobile telephony ; firm value

We consider dynamic competition among platforms in a market with network externalities. A platform that dominated the market in the previous period becomes "focal" in the current period, in that agents play the equilibrium in which they adopt the focal platform whenever such equilibrium exists. Yet when faced with higher-quality competition, can a low-quality platform remain focal? In the finite-horizon case, the unique equilibrium is efficient for "patient" platforms; with an infinite time horizon, however, there are multiple equilibria where either the low- or high-quality platform dominates. If qualities are stochastic, the platform with a better average quality wins with a higher probability, even when its realized quality is lower, and this probability increases as platforms become more patient. Hence social welfare may decline as platforms become more forward looking.

At the request of the Minister for Climate and Energy, Paul Magnette, who is also responsible for Consumer Affairs, the NBB's Microeconomic Analysis Service conducted an investigation into the link between payment arrears for mobile telephony and arrears on loan repayments. In this inquiry, which was carried out using data drawn from the Preventel records and from the Central Individual Credit Register, the profile of people with arrears for both types of debt was also analysed. The profile analysis shows that defaulters with a Preventel registration form a specific group among CICR defaulters. People with payment arrears for both types of debt tend to have a demographic and credit profile which to a large extent matches that of CICR defaulters with no mobile phone payment arrears, but a few differences were also found between both groups of defaulters. A number of trends in borrowing and repayment behaviour turn out to be much more pronounced in the first of these two defaulter groups, but it is above all in regard to the age aspect that the differences are most striking. In cases where people have fallen behind in their payments for both types of debt, it actually turns out to be a younger group. Generally speaking, these borrowers take out their first loan at an earlier age, and they also tend to run up their first arrears when they are younger. The inquiry further revealed that there is a statistically significant link between payment arrears for mobile telephony and credit arrears, and this applies for various definitions of payment arrears. Repayment problems generally tend to emerge sooner in payment arrears for mobile telephony bills than in arrears on loans. A simple logistic regression model indicates that dummy variables for a Preventel registration, and for the duration of that registration, still have a definite predictive value with regard to credit arrears, after controlling for a number of demographic and credit variables in the model. As the assessment of the credit risk of private individuals is based on a set of socio-economic variables, payment arrears for mobile telephony could therefore be a useful complementary variable in that assessment.

Rwanda was a poor, aid dependent subsistence farming economy when it set itself the goal, set out in Vision 2020, of becoming a middle income country by 2020. Agriculture and ICT were both important pillars in the strategy to achieve the goal. This presentation considers the impact of ICT development in Rwanda, in particular the near-universal reach of mobile phone connectivity, on farmers still gaining their livelihood through subsistence farming, often in remote rural areas. Drawing on interviews of policy makers and implementers, awareness of the impact at the centre of strategic planning is considered. There is surprise at the speed of mobile phone usage - and at the rise of money transfers by phone. The regulatory response and promotion of further technological development in the financial sector, so as to improve services in rural areas is also identified. Household survey data show the importance and different status of phones within the household, compared with other assets. They are more often sold under financial pressure, but they are more often subsequently replaced than other assets. Financial initiatives delivered via mobile phone connectivity in poor countries, especially those with difficult agricultural contexts, clearly have high impact potential, and require further study.

This paper discusses the mobile number's status as a general purpose identifier in digital customer journeys. The strength and availability of the mobile number as ID is assessed across several markets and examples of use are given. Two cases where the mobile number already is a trusted resource and installed base are presented. Strength and availability for the mobile number as ID varies across markets depending on ID requirements for SIM-cards and the local ecosystem: some markets score high, others low. The cases discussed are Norway and Pakistan. They are respectively a developed and developing economy however; both demonstrate a strong and available mobile number and innovative uses in digital customer journeys. This signals on the one hand a potential universal applicability of the mobile number across markets with very different prerequisites, on the other hand that use of the mobile number is a local phenomenon only. The analysis indicates that across markets there is an ongoing and continuous management of both mobile numbers and other IDs in order to affect strength and availability, to reach a sufficient installed base, and position as an attractive resource for digital customer journeys

Partly motivated by the recent antitrust investigations concerning Google, we develop a leverage theory of tying in two-sided markets. We analyze incentives for a monopolist to tie its monopolized product with another product in a two-sided market. Tying provides a mechanism to circumvent the non-negative price constraint in the tied product market without inviting an aggressive response as the rival firm faces the non-negative price constraint. We identify conditions under which tying in two-sided markets is profitable and explore its welfare implications. Our mechanism can be more widely applied to any markets in which sales to consumers in one market can generate additional revenues that cannot be competed away due to non-negative price constraints.

Minimum term contracts ("MTC") are widely used in the communications sector. They are frequently associated with equipment subsidies. But they are also offered to customers in exchange for a discount. MTCs usually come with an early termination fee ("ETF"), a penalty the customer has to pay for leaving the company before the end of the contract period. This paper provides an economic rationale for the use of MTCs when they are not linked to handset subsidies, discusses the design of the ETF in these cases, and assesses the potential implications in terms of market efficiency. We show that MTCs can be used as a screening device to segment the market between customers with differing preferences for being able to change provider at any time. This may result in a higher level of output and lower average prices.

The adoption of broadband technology is a major policy issue for all countries. The objective of this paper is to identify factors contributing to mobile broadband (3G+4G mobile phones) adoption by focusing on smartphones. Broadband can broadly be divided into fixed (DSL, cable modem, FTTH) and mobile systems. This paper focuses on mobile broadband in six of the 34 OECD member countries-the US, the UK, France, Germany, Korea, and Japan-which represent more than 50% of the total population and mobile devices in use of OECD countries. Panel data analysis using data from 2000 to 2012 identified the introduction of smartphones, market competitiveness in terms of HHI, and FTTH adoption as factors contributing to mobile broadband adoption. The findings regarding HHI are particularly relevant to the much-contested issue of "carrier consolidation" and indicate that consolidation may have a detrimental effect on mobile broadband adoption, and, therefore should not be approved by regulators.
