    In this searching and wide-ranging book, Timothy J. Reiss seeks to explain how the concept of literature that we accept today first took shape between the mid-sixteenth century and the early seventeenth, a time of cultural transformation. Drawing on literary, political, and philosophical texts from Central and Western Europe, Reiss maintains that by the early eighteenth century divergent views concerning gender, politics, science, taste, and the role of the writer had consolidated, and literature came to be regarded as an embodiment of universal values.During the second half of the sixteenth century, Reiss asserts, conceptual consensus was breaking down, and many Western Europeans found themselves overwhelmed by a sense of social decay. A key element of this feeling of catastrophe, Reiss points out, was the assumption that thought and letters could not affect worldly reality. Demonstrating that a political discourse replaced the no-longer-viable discourse of theology, he looks closely at the functions that letters served in the reestablishment of order. He traces the development of the idea of literature in texts by Montaigne, Spenser, Sidney, Shakespeare, Lope de Vega, and Cervantes, among others; through seventeenth-century writings by such authors as Davenant, Boileau, Dryden, Rymer, Anne Dacier, Astell, and Leibniz; to eighteenth-century works including those of Addison, Pope, Batteux and Hutcheson, Burke, Lessing, Kant, and Wollstonecraft. Reiss follows key strands of the tradition, particularly the concept of the sublime, into the nineteenth century through a reading of Hegel's Aesthetics.The Meaning of Literature will contribute to current debates concerning cultural dominance and multiculturalism.     Over the past decade, religious, secular, and spiritual distinctions have broken down, forcing scholars to rethink secularity and its relationship to society. Since classifying a person, activity, or experience as religious or otherwise is an important act of valuation, one that defines the characteristics of a group and its relation to others, scholars are struggling to recast such concepts in an increasingly ambiguous, pluralistic world. This collection considers religious and secular categories and what they mean to those who seek valuable, ethical lives. As they investigate how individuals and groups determine significance, set goals, and attribute meaning, contributors illustrate the ways in which religious, secular, and spiritual designations serve as markers of value. Reflecting on recent ethnographic and historical research, chapters explore contemporary psychical research and liberal American homeschooling; the work of nineteenth and early-twentieth-century American psychologists and French archaeologists; the role of contemporary humanitarian and volunteer organizations based in Europe and India; and the prevalence of highly mediated and spiritualized publics, from international psy-trance festivals to Ghanaian national political contexts. Contributors particularly focus on the role ambivalence, attachment, and disaffection in the formation of religious, secular, and spiritual identities, resetting research on secular society and contemporary religious life while illuminating what matters in the lives of ordinary individuals. Es reagiert damit auf die latente Machtvergessenheit hermeneutischer Tradition, profiliert sowohl die Arbeit am Deutungs- als auch am Machtbegriff und versucht, die Verschränkungen von Deutungs- und Machtprozessen aufzuzeigen. Dabei werden besonders konkurrierende Deutungen und ihre konfligierenden Geltungsansprüche in den Blick genommen. Dieser Band entfaltet das Potential von Deutungsmachtanalysen erstmalig innovativ und multiperspektivisch im Kontext praktisch-theologischer Reflexion. In einem ersten Teil werden Grundfragen der Deutungsmachtanalyse aufgenommen und entfaltet, wie das Fach Praktische Theologie überhaupt von Fragen der Macht affiziert werden kann. Dabei werden auch das modale Machtverständnis und die Diskursanalyse Foucaults auf die Praktische Theologie bezogen. Grundlegende Diskurse wie die des Alterns oder der Kulturhermeneutik werden entsprechend deutungsmachtaffin erschlossen. In einem zweiten Teil werden Formen religiöser und kirchlicher Kommunikation auf Phänomene von Deutungsmachtansprüchen hin untersucht und die rhetorischen, metaphorischen und performativen Strategien der Aufmerksamkeitserzeugung und der Vermittlung von Evidenzansprüchen kritisch freigelegt. Dabei werden verschiedene Handlungsfelder der Praktischen Theologie berücksichtigt wie z.B. Liturgik und Homiletik, Kasualien, Seelsorge, Kybernetik, Diakonie und Religionspädagogik The concept of “interpretative power” is a response to the latent “power amnesia” of the hermeneutic tradition and is meant to show the interrelationship between interpretation and power. Dieses Buch verfolgt das Ziel, einen Beitrag zu einer Theorie des Verstehens zu leisten, indem es einen Ausschnitt aus dem Bereich der Objekte und Formen des Verstehens untersucht. Der tschechische Literaturwissenschaftler Milan Jankovič entwickelte sein Modell vom Kunstwerk als Quelle eines offenen, dynamischen Sinnbildungsprozesses in Auseinandersetzung mit der Ästhetik vor allem des Prager Strukturalismus. Erstmals erscheinen hier seine Studien in einem größeren Zusammenhang auf Deutsch. Der Band enthält neben der grundlegenden Monographie zum Werk als Sinngeschehen, die nach der Niederschlagung des Prager Frühlings nicht mehr erscheinen konnte, Auszüge aus neueren Arbeiten, in denen Jankovič sein Konzept auch im Lichte neuerer Theorieanstöße weiter ausarbeitete.

Darin greift er auf die beiden Begriffe "Handeln" und "Bedeutung" zurück, um in ihrer Bezugnahme folgendem Problem nachzugehen: Handeln beinhaltet nicht nur einen funktionalen bzw. Zweck-Mittel-Bezug, sondern im Kontext etwa der Ethik und Politik auch die Notwendigkeit eines eine Bedeutung, einen Sinn erschließenden, hermeneutischen Vermögens. Innerhalb einer gelingenden lebensweltlichen Praxis sind wir stets auf ein Verstehen, auf Orientierung, auf die Integration von Bedeutungs- und Sinnbezügen angewiesen, ein Problemzusammenhang, der durch den Ausdruck "hermeneutische Pragmatik" gekennzeichnet wird. Letztere Kennzeichnung beinhaltet noch eine weitergehende Fragestellung: In welcher Form und in welchem Umfang kann eine Pragmatik eine Fundierungs- bzw. Begründungsleistung für die praktische Philosophie erbringen? In diesem problemzentrierten Kontext unterzieht Wernecke Wittgenstein, Peirce und Heidegger vor dem Hintergrund eines Sprachhandelns, einer Zeichenhandlung und einer hermeneutisch-fundamentalontologischen Praxis einer Untersuchung mit dem Ziel, die Vielschichtigkeit, die Differenziertheit des Phänomens Praxis bzw. Pragmatik erkennbar werden zu lassen.     In this searching and wide-ranging book, Timothy J. Reiss seeks to explain how the concept of literature that we accept today first took shape between the mid-sixteenth century and the early seventeenth, a time of cultural transformation. Drawing on literary, political, and philosophical texts from Central and Western Europe, Reiss maintains that by the early eighteenth century divergent views concerning gender, politics, science, taste, and the role of the writer had consolidated, and literature came to be regarded as an embodiment of universal values.During the second half of the sixteenth century, Reiss asserts, conceptual consensus was breaking down, and many Western Europeans found themselves overwhelmed by a sense of social decay. A key element of this feeling of catastrophe, Reiss points out, was the assumption that thought and letters could not affect worldly reality. Demonstrating that a political discourse replaced the no-longer-viable discourse of theology, he looks closely at the functions that letters served in the reestablishment of order. He traces the development of the idea of literature in texts by Montaigne, Spenser, Sidney, Shakespeare, Lope de Vega, and Cervantes, among others; through seventeenth-century writings by such authors as Davenant, Boileau, Dryden, Rymer, Anne Dacier, Astell, and Leibniz; to eighteenth-century works including those of Addison, Pope, Batteux and Hutcheson, Burke, Lessing, Kant, and Wollstonecraft. Reiss follows key strands of the tradition, particularly the concept of the sublime, into the nineteenth century through a reading of Hegel's Aesthetics.The Meaning of Literature will contribute to current debates concerning cultural dominance and multiculturalism.     "Against the background of often esoteric literature in semiotics, this book offers a fresh and rigorous new interpretation of how to approach the study of communication, signs and meaning. Grounded in a deductive theory of interacting systems, Piotr Sadowski’s book provides an accessible account of the hierarchy of communication. Divided into two parts, this book argues in the first section that a deductive semiotic theory generates communication situations of increasing complexity, from contiguous communication to indirect, referential forms based on indexical, iconic, and symbolic signs. Within this system, Sadowski explains how key concepts of the semiotic model such as information, parainformation and metainformation can account for degrees of cognitive complexity of communication processes, including the perception and interpretation of signs on literal and figurative levels. After this clear, step-by-step exposition of the theory of interacting systems, Systemic Semiotics then explores various applications of this theory, providing new insights into problems subsumed under communication studies, cultural theory, literary and film studies, and psychology."

The word "text" is used here in the broadest sense of the term: it denotes literary books, but also oral tales, speeches, newspaper articles and comics. One of the purposes of this volume is to discover what these different texts have in common. The texts are approached from four main perspectives: New Philology, Linguistics, Iconography and Reception studies. Contributors come from diverse disciplines, such as Classical Studies, Medieval Studies, English literature, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Cultural Studies, Art History, Linguistics, and Communication and Information Studies, all united in a common purpose to understand the workings of narrative texts.
