    "The Face of medicine examines the overlapping worlds of art and medicine in late nineteenth-century France. It sheds new light on the relevance of the visual in medical and scientific cultures and on the relationship between artistic and medical practices and imagery. By analysing previously unstudied multi-disciplinary sources, this original study rethinks the politics of medical representations and their social impact. Hunter argues that artworks and medical collections played a key role in forming the public face of medicine. Through a focused examination of paintings from the 1886 and 1887 Paris Salons that portray famous men from the medical and scientific elite - Louis Pasteur, Jules-Émile Péan and Jean-Martin Charcot - along with the images and objects that these men made for personal and occupational purposes, she explores how the masculinities of eminent medical men were visualised. ...     "This study examines the force of tradition in conservative German visual culture. It explores thematic continuities in the post-conflict representation of battlefield identities, from the 25th anniversary of the Franco-Prussian War in 1895 to the demise of the Weimar Republic in 1933. Using 40 carefully chosen images from both high and low culture, Paul Fox discusses complex and interdependent responses in German visual culture to a wide spectrum of operational military experience. These include regional conflict, total war, internal security operations and border skirmishes during the period. The book demonstrates how conservative artists, illustrators, photographers, and sculptors engaged in representing this full spectrum of conflict were preoccupied with the inequalities of battlefield encounters and the consequential quest for moral advantage. They furnished material that exemplified everything positive the ideal German male could hope to be when at war - even when the outcome was defeat. Their construction of an imagined martial masculinity based on an aggressive moral superiority was so deeply rooted that the continuities taken forward eventually provided a basis for a programmatic imagining of how Germany might again exert its political presence as a great military power in Central Europe after 1918. In this ground-breaking new investigation, Allison Leigh explores how Russian painters sought to depict the new psychological struggles associated with modernity and the implications such visual manifestations of anxiety had for masculinity at the time. Drawing on a wide variety of source material, including previously untranslated letters, journals, and contemporary criticism, Leigh investigates how men's lives changed as they experienced the cultural upheavals of the nineteenth century. In so doing, she introduces readers to Russian artists such as Pavel Fedotov, Karl Briullov, Il'ia Repin, and Ivan Kramskoi, all of whom produced masterpieces of realist art in dialogue with paintings made in European artistic centers at the time. Er lehrt und forscht im Bereich von trans*/queer studies sowie der Kultur- und Medienwissenschaften. Long description: Hartnäckig hält sich die Ansicht, es gäbe »in echt« nur zwei Geschlechter. Diese heteronormative Zweigeschlechtlichkeit wird sowohl durch die Wissenschaften als auch durch visuelle Repräsentationen von Geschlecht aufrechterhalten. Als Einsprüche in solch hegemoniale Wissensformationen diskutiert Josch Hoenes queere/trans* Fotografien von Del LaGrace Volcano und Loren Cameron sowie den Film »Boys Don´t Cry« aus transdisziplinärer Perspektive: Welche Potenziale besitzen kulturell-künstlerische Arbeiten, um Geschlechterformationen von Trans*personen denk- und lebbarer werden zu lassen? Und welche neuen Möglichkeiten eröffnen sie damit, (sich) zu erzählen?
