    Man spricht manchmal davon, dass man 'ins Freie' wolle, wenn man vorübergehend die Städte hinter sich lässt und sich aufs Land begibt. Gemeint ist mit dem Freien nicht das Landleben, vielmehr begegnen wir ihm dort, wo das begrenzte, vermessene, verbaute, bewirtschaftete Land mit seinen besonderen Ortschaften und Wegschaften zurücktritt, um etwas schlechthin Unverfügbares und Unbewohnbares aufzudecken, das ihm zu Grunde liegt: die Landschaft. Sie lässt sich gerade nicht auf das Geo-graphische ihrer Reliefs reduzieren, auf die Arten ihrer Gesteine, Gewächse oder Gewässer, schon deshalb nicht, weil die Himmel mit ihren wechselnden Wettern, Lichtern und Dunkelheiten, ihren Kälte- und Wärmeströmungen, die Erden mit ihren Nässen und Dürren, Überflutungen und Erschütterungen, Versumpfungen und Verwüstungen je mit zur Erscheinung der Landschaften gehören. Vor allem aber tauchen Landschaften dort auf, wo die Länder auf bestimmte Weise entgrenzt werden: Sie überschreiten nicht nur die Orte ins Ortlose, die Wege ins Weglose, sondern sie transzendieren die Beschränkungen auf das Nahe und Enge, Niedrige und Flächige, um sich, über die Horizonte hinweg, schlechthin der Ferne zu, der Weite, der Höhe, der Tiefe zu öffnen. Gleichwohl sind Landschaften nicht grenzenlos, sie gestalten sich sogar zu gleitenden individuellen Besonderheiten. - Ein Landstrich mag uns vertraut und zur Heimat werden, Landschaften aber strahlen in ihrer Freie stets eine geheimnisvolle Fremdheit aus. Hans-Dieter Bahr geht dem Verstehen der Landschaft in der europäischen Tradition nach, um ihre grundlegende Differenz hervorzuheben zum Land mit seinen bestimmten Gebieten, zum Territorium, von dem schon das römische Recht erklärte, es bestehe aus 'terra' und 'terror', und zumal auch zu den 'Öko-Systemen' des 'Landschafts- und Naturschutzes'. So erst wird sie als das Freie im Blick auf ihre verschiedensten Horizonte verständlich werden. Hans-Dieter Bahr lehrte von 1970 bis 2000 Philosophie in Berlin, Bremen, Mailand und Wien.

Our physical orientation in place is one of the defining characteristics of our embodied existence. However, while there is no human life, culture, or action without a specific location functioning as its setting, people go much further than this bare fact in attributing meaning and value to their physical environment. 'Landscape’ denotes this symbolic conception and use of terrain. It is a creation of human culture. In Valuing Landscape we explore different ways in which physical environments impacted on the cultural imagination of Greco-Roman Antiquity. In seventeen chapters with different disciplinary perspectives, we demonstrate the values attached to mountains, the underworld, sacred landscapes, and battlefields, and the evaluations of locale connected with migration, exile, and travel

Our physical orientation in place is one of the defining characteristics of our embodied existence. However, while there is no human life, culture, or action without a specific location functioning as its setting, people go much further than this bare fact in attributing meaning and value to their physical environment. 'Landscape’ denotes this symbolic conception and use of terrain. It is a creation of human culture. In Valuing Landscape we explore different ways in which physical environments impacted on the cultural imagination of Greco-Roman Antiquity. In seventeen chapters with different disciplinary perspectives, we demonstrate the values attached to mountains, the underworld, sacred landscapes, and battlefields, and the evaluations of locale connected with migration, exile, and travel
