    Postcolonial theory is central to many scholarly debates around the world. Some of these debates have become rather sterile and are characterized by a repetitive reworking of old issues, focusing on cultural questions of language and identity in particular. Margaret A. Majumdar investigates the causes of the apparent stagnation of postcolonial theory in some circles, and provides an overview of the divergence between Anglophone and Francophone approaches to the postcolonial. Outlining in particular the contribution of thinkers such as Césaire, Senghor, Memmi, Sartre and Fanon to the worldwide development of anti-imperialist ideas, she offers a critical perspective on the ongoing difficulties of France's relationship with its colonial and postcolonial Others and suggests new lines of thought that are currently emerging in the Francophone world, which are sure to enliven Anglophone discussion and debates

    The relationship between power and language has been a central theme in critical theory for decades now, yet there is still much to be learned about the sheer force of language in the world in which we live. In Empire of Language, Laurent Dubreuil explores the power-language phenomenon in the context of European and, particularly, French colonialism and its aftermath. Through readings of the colonial experience, he isolates a phraseology based on possession, in terms of both appropriation and haunting, that has persisted throughout the centuries. Not only is this phraseology a legacy of the past, it is still active today, especially in literary renderings of the colonial experience-but also, and more paradoxically, in anticolonial discourse. This phrase shaped the teaching of European languages in the (former) empires, and it tried to configure the usage of those idioms by the "Indigenes." Then, scholarly disciplines have to completely reconsider their discursive strategies about the colonial, if, at least, they attempt to speak up.Dubreuil ranges widely in terms of time and space, from the ancien régime through the twentieth century, from Paris to Haiti to Quebec, from the Renaissance to the riots in the banlieues. He examines diverse texts, from political speeches, legal documents, and colonial treatises to anthropological essays, poems of the Négritude, and contemporary rap, ever attuned to the linguistic strategies that undergird colonial power. Equally conversant in both postcolonial criticism and poststructuralist scholarship on language, but also deeply grounded in the sociohistorical context of the colonies, Dubreuil sets forth the conditions for an authentically postcolonial scholarship, one that acknowledges the difficulty of getting beyond a colonialism-and still maintains the need for an afterward

Rather than being the passive recipients of print culture generated in city centres, the inhabitants of provinces and colonies have acted independently, as jobbing printers in provincial Britain, black newspaper proprietors in the West Indies, and library patrons in "Middletown," Indiana, to mention a few examples. This important new book gives us a sophisticated account of how printed materials circulated, a more precise sense of their impact, and a fuller of understanding of how local contexts shaped reading experiences

Kasey Evans tracks the migration of ideas surrounding temperance from classical and humanist writings through to sixteenth- and seventeenth-century applications, emphasizing the ways in which they have transcended the vocabularies of geography and time.Colonial Virtue offers fresh insights into how English Renaissance writers used temperance as a privileged lens through which to view New World morality and politically to justify colonial practices in Virginia and the West Indies.     Im 20. Jahrhundert fanden es die Deutschen kaum verwunderlich, dass es wenig Zuwanderung aus den (ehemaligen) Kolonien gab. Aus Politik, Gesellschaft und Wissenschaft kam niemand auf die Idee, überhaupt die Frage nach (post-)kolonialer Einwanderung zu stellen. Die ausbleibende Verwunderung lässt sich durch die Selbstverständlichkeit erklären, mit der man annahm, Weiß-Sein sei eine Bedingung für Deutschsein und die deutsche Nation „kein Einwanderungsland” (Zitat Helmut Kohl, 1992). Beim Blick nach Frankreich und Großbritannien hätte man zwar ein Defizit bei der nachkolonialen Einwanderung nach Deutschland feststellen können (1974 gab es in Frankreich regulär über eine Million Menschen allein aus den ehemaligen afrikanischen Kolonien). Das Gegenteil war jedoch der Fall. Man bemühte in Deutschland den Vergleich mit Frankreich und Großbritannien lediglich, um zu behaupten, dass das deutsche Kolonialreich nur kurze Zeit existierte und zeitlich zu weit zurück lag, um einen dauernden Einfluss zu hinterlassen. Kohls Zitat, das deutsche Einwanderungsbehörden schon seit 1945 zum Leitmotiv ihrer Arbeit gemacht hatten, war weniger deskriptiv als präskriptiv gemeint. Bei der Zuwanderung nach Deutschland sollte es weder einen „Kolonialbonus“ für Auswanderungswillige aus den ehemaligen Überseegebieten geben, noch kam die deutsche Regierung auf die Idee, durch Bevorzugung von Migrant:innen oder „Gastarbeiter:innen“-Rekrutierung aus den ehemaligen Kolonien Wiedergutmachungspolitik zu betreiben, wie es zum Beispiel die englische Regierung mit der Einladung an die „Windrush-Generation“ aus karibischen Ländern zwischen 1948 und 1971 getan hatte.
