    Sören Kierkegaards Konzept der Verzweiflung steht im Mittelpunkt von Christiane Voss' medienanthropologischen Überlegungen. Der Beitrag behandelt und verortet die Frage nach der Lebensnot, aber auch nach dem Leiden zwischen Existenzial- und Medienphilosophie. Soll Kierkegaards Verwurzelung in der Philosophie des 19. Jahrhunderts sowie in der christlichen Ethik auch keinesfalls ausgeblendet werden, so argumentiert Voss dennoch dafür, Kierkegaards Subjektivitäts- und Freiheitsverständnis zu aktualisieren und für die Technik- und Medienphilosophie produktiv zu machen. Eine besondere Rolle spielen für Voss die Imagination und Einbildungskraft, auf die sie im Sinne einer medienanthropologischen Haltung rekurrieren will, die weder in neue Anthropozentrismen verfällt, noch einem Posthumanismus folgt, der Fragen der Normativität und Freiheit unbeantwortet lässt. Auf Grundlage der Philosophie Kierkegaards entwickelt Voss eine medienanthropologische Ästhetik, die durch ein selbstreflexives Moment gegenwärtige Technikphilosophien und Ökologien ergänzen will.

    Kierkegaard adopte différents pseudonymes, enquête à la façon du détective et recourt à des mises en abîme narratives. Sa philosophie indicielle au style si singulier est marquée par les trois stades bien connus de l’esthétique, de l’éthique et du religieux. Se démarquant de l’interprétation habituelle accordant aux trois stades kierkegaardiens une valeur croissante, le présent essai propose une lecture faisant apparaître la dimension métaphysique du stade esthétique. Si le stade religieux du chevalier de la foi culmine en effet dans un ailleurs absolu et ne s’atteint que par un saut, il ne s’ensuit pas que le stade éthique en représente une voie d’accès ni qu’il lui soit donné de supplanter le stade esthétique. L’auteur défend ici, – à travers l’analyse des textes, de la correspondance et des dessins toujours oubliés, dont un autoportrait du philosophe danois – l’idée que le stade esthétique reflète en miroir le stade religieux. Il en incarne l’envers diabolique et s’en rapproche comme son ombre. L’homme de l’éthique se croit bon, l’homme de l’esthétique sait qu’il s’acharne dans le rapport spéculaire à l’autre pour mieux esquiver ce qu’il sait devoir voir. L’éthicien rassure et se rassure dans la bonne conscience, alors que l’esthète interprète les indices et scrute la force d’une présence invisible. D’où le repérage des différents procédés optiques, des dispositifs visuels, des milieux transparents et de la résonance (l’influence d’un Chladni) effectué par l’auteur du présent essai, afin d’examiner leur rôle dans l’oeuvre du Danois. On ne lit pas Kierkegaard impunément, l’auteur du Journal du Séducteur peut séduire jusqu’à l’angoisse. Ses doubles l’ont sans doute voulu.

    Gregory Maertz has written extensively on Romantic and Modern literature, art, and ideas. In these nine related essays, he investigates the expression of Romanticism in literature, philosophy, and cultural politics from the Renaissance to Modernism. The comparative essays in Part One examine the affinity between the religious logic of Sir Thomas Browne and Søren Kierkegaard; Tolstoy’s enduring attraction to Schopenhauer’s thought; Rilke’s debts to the sculptor Rodin; the identification of an early novel by William Godwin as the chief precursor text to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein; and the corresponding literary projects of Osip Mandelstam, Rilke, and David Jones. In Part Two the essays are clustered around the literary activity of writers and philosophers associated with radicalism in Britain and transcendentalism in America: a reconsideration of the life of William Godwin; the central role played by English radicals in the transmission of German literature; Godwin’s innovations in travel fiction; and the crystallization of authorial identity around the influence of Goethe in the work of women writers such as Mary Wollstonecraft, Margaret Fuller, and George Eliot.
