    According to the Acta Iohannis - a Gnostic text well known in the Middle Ages - John, feeling that his end was near, held his last sermon, then he had his grave dug and laid himself down in it. However, the following day the faithful found that the sepulcher was open and filled with manna replacing the body of the saint that had been raised to heaven, although in a less solemn way than Mary. In another tradition, the incorruptibility granted to St John’s body was interpreted as a prize for his chaste existence, making the saint a model of life for the Canons from the time of the Gregorian Reform. In the Roman area, the oldest representations of this sort of assumption are found in the twelfth century, accompanied by the depiction of the Last Sermon of the Apostle and his Self-Burial. This study will, therefore, examine the genesis and development, in narrative sources and in paintings, of this special iconography in Italy from its inception until the fifteenth century.

    This contribution provides the first comprehensive overview of the extant iconography of Jan van Leeuwen († 1378), the ‘Good Cook’ at the hermitage and later priory of Groenendaal in the Sonian Forest outside Brussels. On the basis of a detailed analysis of the 8 extant pictorial representations of Jan, this article argues that the canons of Groenendaal instigated Jan’s veneration almost immediately after his death and selected three central foci for this veneration: his demanding active life as the cook in the monastery, his constant contemplation of God that was not interrupted by his active life, and his authorship of divinely inspired mystical treatises. The article argues that these prominent elements in the first hagiographical texts influenced the earliest known iconographic representations of Jan, which attempted to visualize these aspects of his holiness. This contribution shows how the earliest sources had a profound impact on all later hagiographical writings and pictorial representations of Jan until the end of the eighteenth century, when the iconographic and hagiographic traditions appear to have ended. The article shows that although Jan has never officially been canonized and the extant iconographic depictions are not numerous, they were persistent through time and were not limited geographically to Groenendaal or even the Low Countries.

    In 1888, Leo XIII canonised the founders of the Servite Order. For the first time the founder of a religious community was not recognised in a single figure but in a group of confessors. They were canonized six centuries after the Order’s foundation and this process required considerable efforts. The paper deals with the Servite hagiography and the Founders’ iconography, examining intersections and relationships between them from the 14th century up to 1570. The process of transmission of the Founders’ memory was extremely problematic because of the contradictions that marked the group ever since the hermit experience on Mount Senario in the 1240s-1250s. The memory of the origins that has been transmitted to us was written in a completely changed context, when the Order was already formed as mendicant, promoting other blessed friars’ figures, above all Philip of Florence. In this context, the Founders were largely overlooked, as can be seen in few surviving 13th and 14th-centuries hagiographies, such as the Legenda de origine Ordinis or the Legenda beati Philippi, as well as from the absence of figurative representations. From the 17th century, due to the opening of the canonization process, the Founders’ memory underwent a careful review. For this purpose, in the printed Positiones and in the handwritten reports, some medieval-supposed artworks, portraying the Founders, were described. This text explains how the iconographic elaboration in 17th and 18th centuries is the result of a peculiar interpretation of the hagiographic sources of previous centuries, and how this operation was so successful that it led to the canonization of a group of the seven individuals.

    This article explores the two fresco cycles devoted to Saint Francesca Romana (Francesca Bussa de’ Leoni 1384-1440) in the monastery of Tor de’ Specchi in Rome, founded in 1433. The two cycles, created by different painters twenty years apart, are situated in two adjoining spaces of the monastery. The first, attributed to Antoniazzo Romano, was frescoed in 1468 in a space used for prayer and mass (the Oratorio) and represents her charitable actions, miracles, and celestial visions. The second cycle dated to 1485, in terra verde technique, is situated in the ancient refectory and depicts Francesca Romana’s encounter with demonic creatures. Intriguingly, although Francesca was not canonized until 1608, she is presented as a saint in both cycles. We analyze the two parietal decorations in relation to their sources, the Tractato delli visioni di santa Francesca Romana and Tractato delle bactaglie. These two texts were written in Roman vulgar by Francesca’s confessor, Giovanni Mattiotti, in 1447 to record her divine visions and battles with evil. By focusing on selected scenes from both the cycles, we ascertain how closely the images adhere to Mattiotti’s written accounts or, instead, the autonomy of the images. The aim is to grasp how images and words work together in dialogue and how, thanks to this interaction, the different polarities inherent to holiness can be rendered visual. Indeed, whereas the colorful scenes show aspects of holiness linked to a vivifying dimension - Francesca is welcomed into the heavenly realm in the presence of Christ and the Virgin - the terra verde images depict a noxious dimension characterized by light deprivation, indoor spaces, and opposition to the Devil’s torments. Ultimately, by investigating visual forms, material aspects, and narrative strategies, we unearth how Francesca’s sainthood status has been translated and codified.

    The concept of virginity is crucial for understanding medieval societies, as it constituted an important social commodity, a laudable Christian virtue, and a signature quality of many saints. While multiple connotations of virginitas coexisted throughout the medieval period, the strategies employed to visually communicate this physical and moral quality were equally diverse. This paper investigates various representational strategies that were chosen to depict one female saint - St Cunigunde (c. 980-1033, canonised 1200) - in the late medieval German-speaking lands. This paper argues that St Cunigunde’s multifaceted profile allowed for several interpretations of her virginity: embodying bodily purity, spiritual excellence, honorary virginity, and marital fidelity. Each of these interpretations was communicated through distinct representational strategies, depending on devotional and iconographic contexts. By the end of the medieval period, an image portraying Cunigunde undergoing an ordeal of burning ploughshares to prove her virginity proliferated. This iconographic type became popular because, on the one hand, it made Cunigunde easily recognisable, and, on the other, it associated her with a well-known type of virgin martyr, since the sexual abstinence of St Cunigunde and the ordeal she went through were understood as being comparable to the act of martyrdom. Unique artistic commissions devoted to St Cunigunde allowed for more interpretations of her virginity, relying on the audience’s knowledge of the legends and the commissioner’s own intentions, experiences, and ideals.

    The cult of Saint Torquatus has strong roots in the city of Guimarães, in the north of Portugal, where, tradition narrates his incorrupt body was found. The devotion to this martyr saint goes back to the eighth century, a time when Vita Torquati was written, based on the expansion and development of Christian resistance and thus grounded in the mythical times of the founders of Iberian kingdoms. The devotion to Saint Torquatus underwent, however, a new surge at the end of the Middle Ages, with reports of the apparition, in duplicate, of his incorrupt body. The description of the prodigious miracle and the translation of his holy body are repeated and amplified in literature of a memorialist nature in the Modern Era. Understood by some as one of the Apostolic Fathers who were direct disciples of São Tiago (Saint James), the evangeliser of Hispania and by others as Torcato Felix, former archbishop of Braga of the eighth century, his iconography follows the traditions of a bishop. This paper intends to demonstrate how the devotion to Saint Torquatus was constructed, strengthened and spread throughout the medieval and early modern periods and how it was subjected to cultural, religious and political issues in the peninsular territory, in the first phase and specific locations in the second phase. It will equally give a definition of its iconography, bearing in mind the saint’s identity and chronological duplicity, as well as the complexity of legends developed, enforced and spread in memorialist literature of the Early Modern age.

    The cult of Saint Christopher represents an important matter in defining the construction of self-identity of the community of Rab as one of the Eastern Adriatic medieval communitas, which local cultural imagination has been modelling for centuries. From the thirteenth and especially during the fourteenth and the fifteenth centuries the community of Rab was constructing its identity based on the local narrative about victorious miracles performed by the relic of St Christopher’s skull. The importance of his presence as a local patron is examined and discussed with regard to the saint’s relic, visual representations and late medieval written sources with special attention to the Historias miraculorum sancti Christophori tres victorias descriptas, edited by bishop Juraj Hermolais (Georgius de Hermolais) in 1308.

    This paper analyzes the role of the hermit Jordan of Quedlinburg (c. 1300-c. 1380), also known as Jordan of Saxony, in the creation of the new biography of Saint Augustine, produced by the Augustinian Order from the fourteenth century onwards. Among Jordan’s texts, which, with few exceptions, formed an important point of reference with regard to the identity and self-awareness of the Order until the mid-fifteenth century, a key role may be attributed to the Collectanea Augustiniana, a fundamental set of texts presented in Paris in 1343. Relying on the authority of the so-called Sermones ad fratres in eremo, in the Collectanea, Jordan presented a new overview of the life of Augustine together with the Metrum pro dipingenda vita Sancti Augustini. This is a unique selection of 48 episodes intended for the design of painted cycles of Augustine’s life, each provided with a brief description and the accompanying tituli. It is clearly a ‘oriented’ selection, which highlights the key moments of the saint’s new biography and it confirms the focus of the Hermits - and of Jordan in particular - for the dissemination of their own version of the story through the use of images.
