    Piketty analyzes a unique collection of data from twenty countries, ranging as far back as the eighteenth century, to uncover key economic and social patterns and shows that modern economic growth and the diffusion of knowledge have allowed us to avoid inequalities. He argues, however, that the tendency of returns on capital to exceed the rate of economic growth will generate extreme inequalities that stir discontent and undermine democratic values if political action is not taken. What are the grand dynamics that drive the accumulation and distribution of capital? Questions about the long-term evolution of inequality, the concentration of wealth, and the prospects for economic growth lie at the heart of political economy. But satisfactory answers have been hard to find for lack of adequate data and clear guiding theories. In this work the author analyzes a unique collection of data from twenty countries, ranging as far back as the eighteenth century, to uncover key economic and social patterns. His findings transform debate and set the agenda for the next generation of thought about wealth and inequality. He shows that modern economic growth and the diffusion of knowledge have allowed us to avoid inequalities on the apocalyptic scale predicted by Karl Marx. But we have not modified the deep structures of capital and inequality as much as we thought in the optimistic decades following World War II. The main driver of inequality, the tendency of returns on capital to exceed the rate of economic growth, today threatens to generate extreme inequalities that stir discontent and undermine democratic values if political action is not taken. But economic trends are not acts of God. Political action has curbed dangerous inequalities in the past, the author says, and may do so again. This original work reorients our understanding of economic history and confronts us with sobering lessons for today.

    Abstract: "The gender pay gap under central planning and its changes in the course of transition have only lately attracted the attention of researchers. Only few papers focused on comparison between two economic regimes, pre and post reform, having reported narrowing gap for all East European countries. This paper adds more detailed study of timing of the gap changes to existing evidence. This in turn allows to identify which mechanisms of transition were responsible for these changes. It investigates the earnings gap between females and males in Poland over the years 1987-1996, i.e. in the last years of central planning and during the period of transition to market economy. The JMP decomposition, which accounts for changes in overall wage dispersion over time beyond Oaxaca's standard decomposition, is applied on large set of HBS data and reveals some interesting results.     We use administrative tax data to analyze the cumulative, long-run effects of California’s 2004 Paid Family Leave Act (CPFL) on women’s employment, earnings, and childbearing. A regression-discontinuity design exploits the sharp increase in the weeks of paid leave available under the law. We find no evidence that CPFL increased employment, boosted earnings, or encouraged childbearing, suggesting that CPFL had little effect on the gender pay gap or child penalty. For first-time mothers, we find that CPFL reduced employment and earnings roughly a decade after they gave birth.

    Die Zahl der Selbstständigen in Deutschland beläuft sich derzeit auf über vier Millionen und ist das Ergebnis eines über die Jahre zunehmenden Trends, der vor allem von den heute zahlenmäßig dominierenden SoloSelbstständigen getragen war. Für einen Überblick über die selbstständige Erwerbstätigkeit in Deutschland trägt der Bericht empirische Evidenz aus unterschiedlichen Datenquellen zusammen. Die Gruppe der Selbstständigen wird zunächst anhand soziodemographischer Merkmale näher beschrieben. Neben dem Bestand wird auch die Dynamik der selbstständigen Erwerbsarbeit anhand der Zugänge sowie dem Verbleib in Selbstständigkeit untersucht. Die Einkommenssituation von Selbstständigen ist auch unter dem Aspekt zu sehen, dass derzeit ein Großteil der Selbstständigen nicht obligatorisch für das Alter abgesichert ist. Der Bericht beschreibt zunächst das Arbeitsangebot von Selbstständigen und gibt dann anhand verschiedener Maße Auskunft über die Einkommensstruktur von Selbstständigen. Zur Beschreibung der Einkommenssituation werden auch die Haushaltssituation und der Vermögensbesitz berücksichtigt. Wie hoch schließlich die Zahl der Selbstständigen ist, die nicht obligatorisch für das Alter abgesichert sind, wird näherungsweise anhand verschiedener öffentlich zugänglicher Datenquellen ermittelt. The number of self-employed and entrepreneurs in Germany currently amounts to more than four million and is the result of an increasing trend over the years mainly supported by today's dominant group of selfemployed which do not employ dependent workers. The report compiles empirical evidence from various data sources providing an overview of self-employment and entrepreneurship in Germany. Self-employed and entrepreneurs are first described in more detail on the basis of socio-demographic characteristics. In addition to the stock description, the dynamics of self-employment and entrepreneurship are also examined regarding additions and the stability of self-employment or businesses. The income situation of the selfemployed and entrepreneurs must also be seen in the light of the fact that the majority is currently not covered by mandatory old age insurance plans. The report first describes the labour supply of the selfemployed and entrepreneurs, followed by information on the income structure on the basis of various measures. In describing the income situation, the household situation and wealth measures are also taken into account. Finally, the number of self-employed and entrepreneurs persons who are not covered by mandatory old age insurance plans is estimated on the basis of various publicly available data sources.

    In the cross section of countries, there is a strong positive correlation between trade and income, and a negative relationship between trade and inequality. Does this reflect a causal relationship? We adopt the Frankel and Romer (1999) identification strategy, and exploit countries' exogenous geographic characteristics to estimate the causal effect of trade on income and inequality. Our cross-country estimates for trade's impact on real income are consistently positive and significant over time. At the same time, we do not find any statistical evidence that more trade increases aggregate measures of income inequality. Heeding previous concerns in the literature (e.g. Rodriguez and Rodrik, 2001; Rodrik, Subramanian and Trebbi, 2004), we carefully analyze the validity of our geography-based instrument, and confirm that the IV estimates for the impact of trade are not driven by other direct or indirect effects of geography through non-trade channels

    Fishers are often perceived to be poor, and low income levels are used to justify subsidies and other types of direct and indirect income support to maintain coastal communities. In this study we investigate fishers' income levels in four Nordic countries; Denmark, Iceland, Norway and Sweden for different types of fishers and vessels and in comparison to alternative occupations. The most important result is that fishers in these countries are doing relatively well, and only in Sweden is the fishers' average income level below the average national income. Within the fleets, there are substantial differences. Owners of coastal vessels tend to have the lowest income, and also lower than crews.
