    Many migrations are temporary - a fact that has often been ignored in the economic literature on migration. Such omission may be serious in that expected migration temporariness can impart a distinct dynamic element to immigrants' economic behavior, generating possible consequences for non-migrants in both home and host countries. In this paper we provide a thorough examination of the various aspects of temporary migrations that matter for the analysis of economic phenomena. We demonstrate the extent of temporary migrations in population movements. We show how temporariness can affect the various economic choices and how better data have improved both the measurement of nonpermanent migrations and the analyses of various aspects of migrant behavior. We propose a general theoretical framework for modeling temporary migration decisions, based on which we outline the various motives for temporariness while simultaneously reviewing related literature and available data sources. We discuss the possible consequences of migration temporariness for non-migrants in both home and host countries.

    Die Erwerbsbeteiligung von Frauen in Deutschland befindet sich seit mehreren Jahrzehnten in einer stetigen Aufwärtsbewegung. Trotzdem gibt es immer noch große Unterschiede zwischen den Erwerbsverläufen von Frauen und Männern. Mit der Geburt eines Kindes beginnt für viele Frauen eine längere Erwerbsunterbrechung, oftmals gefolgt von einem Übergang in eine Teilzeitbeschäftigung. Dieser Beitrag stellt einige Zahlen und Fakten bezüglich der Erwerbsunterbrechung von Müttern zusammen. Auf der Basis der Daten des Sozio-oekonomischen Panels (SOEP) kommen wir zu dem Schluss, dass Mütter zu Beginn der Auszeit deren Dauer häufig unterschätzen. Auch die zukünftigen Arbeitszeiten entwickeln sich oft anders als ursprünglich geplant. (Vorlage)

    This paper measures the causal effect of time out of the labor force on subsequent employment of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) applicants and distinguishes it from the discouragement effect of receiving disability benefits. Using a unique Social Security Administration workload database to identify exogenous variation in decision times induced by differences in processing speed among disability examiners to whom applicants are randomly assigned, we find that longer processing times reduce the employment and earnings of SSDI applicants for multiple years following application, with the effects concentrated among applicants awarded benefits during their initial application. A one standard deviation (2.1 month) increase in initial processing time reduces long-run "substantial gainful activity" rates by 0.36 percentage points (3.5%) and long-run annual earnings by $178 (5.1%). Because applicants initially denied benefits spend on average more than 15 additional months appealing their denials, previous estimates of the benefit receipt effect are confounded with the effect of delays on subsequent employment. Accounting separately for these channels, we find that the receipt effect is at least 50% larger than previously estimated. Combining the delay and benefits receipt channels reveals that the SSDI application process reduces subsequent employment of applicants on the margin of award by twice as much as prior literature suggests.

    A fundamental question in economics is whether happiness increases pari passu with improvements in material conditions or whether humans grow accustomed to better conditions over time. We rely on a large-scale experiment to examine what kind of impact the provision of housing to extremely poor populations in Latin America has on subjective measures of well-being over time. The objective is to determine whether poor populations exhibit hedonic adaptation in happiness derived from reducing the shortfall in the satisfaction of their basic needs. Our results are conclusive. We find that subjective perceptions of wellbeing improve substantially for recipients of better housing but that after, on average, eight months, 60% of that gain disappears.

    Die G8-Reform zur Verkürzung der Gymnasialschulzeit ist umstritten. Erste Bundesländer wollen inzwischen wieder von der 12-jährigen zur 13-jährigen Schulzeit bis zum Abitur zurückkehren, obwohl es bisher nur wenige verlässliche, empirische Befunde zur Wirkung der G8-Reform gibt. Der vorliegende Artikel gibt einen Überblick über bisherige Forschungsergebnisse zu den Auswirkungen der G8-Reform und diskutiert Herausforderungen bei der Ermittlung von kausalen Reformeffekten.

    Die Erwerbsbeteiligung von Frauen in Deutschland befindet sich seit mehreren Jahrzehnten in einer stetigen Aufwärtsbewegung. Trotzdem gibt es immer noch große Unterschiede zwischen den Erwerbsverläufen von Frauen und Männern. Mit der Geburt eines Kindes beginnt für viele Frauen eine längere Erwerbsunterbrechung, oftmals gefolgt von einem Übergang in eine Teilzeitbeschäftigung. Dieser Beitrag stellt einige Zahlen und Fakten bezüglich der Erwerbsunterbrechung von Müttern zusammen. Auf der Basis der Daten des Sozio-oekonomischen Panels (SOEP) kommen wir zu dem Schluss, dass Mütter zu Beginn der Auszeit deren Dauer häufig unterschätzen. Auch die zukünftigen Arbeitszeiten entwickeln sich oft anders als ursprünglich geplant. (Vorlage)
