    The Medicamina Faciei Femineae is a didactic elegy which showcases an early example of Ovid's trademark combination of a moralistic, instructive form and trivial subject and meter. Exploring female beauty and cosmetics, with particular emphasis on the concept of ‘cultus', the poem also presents five practical recipes for cosmetic treatments used by Roman women. Covering both didactic parody and pharmacological reality, this deceptively complex poem possesses wit, vivacity and importance. The first full study devoted to this little-researched but multi-faceted poem, Ovid on Cosmetics includes an in-depth introduction which situates the poem within its literary heritage of didactic and elegiac poetry, its place in Ovid's oeuvre and its relevance to social values, personal aesthetics and attitudes to female beauty in Roman society.

Die thematische Spannweite der einzelnen Beiträge reicht in diesem Band geographisch von der eurasischen Seidenstraße bis zu dem prominenten Kampfplatz von Kalkriese (mit Spuren einer römisch-germanischen Auseinandersetzung in der augusteischen Ära) und chronologisch von den Zeiten des bronzezeitlichen Westkleinasien und des hethitischen Großreiches bis zur Rezeptionsgeschichte der „klassischen Antike“ im 18.     Why did human beings first begin to write history? Lisa Irene Hau argues that a driving force among Greek historians was the desire to use the past to teach lessons about the present and for the future. She uncovers the moral messages of the ancient Greek writers of history and the techniques they used to bring them across. Hau also shows how moral didacticism was an integral part of the writing of history from its inception in the 5th century BC, how it developed over the next 500 years in parallel with the development of historiography as a genre and how the moral messages on display remained surprisingly stable across this period.

     

     

    For the ancient Greek historiographers, moral didacticism was a way of making sense of the past and making it relevant to the present; but this does not mean that they falsified events: truth and morality were compatible and synergistic ends.

    Überlieferte Originalstelen mit Inschriften der großen Könige Sargon und Narām-Sîn von Akkade, die im 23. Jahrhundert v. Chr. als erste ein Weltreich eroberten, sowie mündlich tradierte Sagen haben diesen beiden Königen einen herausragenden Stellenwert in der historischen Erinnerung der Babylonier und Assyrer verschafft. Dies führte zu einer Reihe erzählender Werke, die zum Teil wie echte Heldenlieder gestaltet sind, zum Teil sich aber auch als authentische Königsinschriften gebärden. Das Verständnis dieser heterogenen Textgruppe in verschiedenen Fragerichtungen zu erhellen, ist das Ziel vorliegender Studie. Zu den Fragestellungen gehören die Bestimmung der Gattungen, denen die Texte angehören, und ihre Scheidung von den authentischen Königsinschriften, die durch das Merkmal der Fiktionalität gekennzeichnet ist. Des Weiteren soll die zum Teil hohe literarische Qualität dieser Werke herausgearbeitet werden. Schließlich wird untersucht, inwiefern sich an diesen Werken die Mechanismen und Bedingungen ihrer Überlieferung ablesen lassen, ob sie Spuren eines mündlichen Sargon- und Narām-Sîn-Sagenschatzes aufweisen und welche literarischen Funktionen sie erfüllten. Die Reihe “Göttinger Beiträge zun Alten Orient” setzt die erfolgreichen “Göttinger Arbeitshefte zur Altorientalischen Literatur” fort. Die Reihe wird vom Seminar für Altorientalistik der Georg-August-Universität Göttingen herausgegeben und behandelt die Erschließung und Deutung der reichhaltigen Schriftdenkmäler in akkadischer oder sumerischer Sprache aus der Zeit von ca. 3100 - 500 v. Chr.

    Der angesehene römische Politiker Plinius der Jüngere (etwa 61-112 n. Chr.) war ein vielseitiger und vielschaffender Schriftsteller, von dem sich neun Bücher Briefe, ein Briefwechsel mit Trajan und ein umfangreicher Panegyricus auf diesen Kaiser erhalten haben. Die einzelnen Briefe der Bücher 1-9 sind künstlerisch durchgeformt und behandeln großenteils allgemeine Fragen, wie den Verfall der individuellen Freiheit und die Situation der Literatur unter dem Prinzipat. Neuartig ist die humane Einstellung des Autors Frauen und Sklaven gegenüber sowie sein waches ästhetisches Interesse für Baukunst und Landschaft.

    Religious studies have long discussed the comparative notion of »holy« beyond religious, cultural, and linguistic boundaries. In this book, Thomas Jurczyk conducts a diachronic comparison of the meaning and application of two notions and their related word fields that are commonly associated with a broader comparative notion of holy, namely the Ancient Armenian term »surb« and its related words and the English word field associated with »holy«. To compare these two semantic fields, his methodological approach operates on the principle of distributional semantics and applies, among others, tools and methods from the field of corpus linguistics

    This book changes our understanding of the Roman conceptions about the sea by placing the focus on shipwrecks as events that act as bridges between the sea and the land. The study explores the different Roman legal definitions of these spaces, and how individuals of divergent legal statuses interacted within these areas. Its main purpose is to chart and analyse the Roman conception of the maritime landscape from the Late Republican until the Severan period. Ancient rulers and jurists modified institutions to serve or safeguard particular interests-political, social, or economic. This book explores how his experience of 4th-century military life affected his writing of history and conversely how his knowledge of literature influenced his writing about the Roman army "Ammianus Marcellinus composed a history of the Roman empire from 96 AD to 378 AD, focusing on the mid-fourth century during which he served in the army. His experience as a soldier during this period provides crucial realia of warfare, while his knowledge of literature, especially the genre of historiography, enabled him to imbue his narrative with literary flair. This book explores the tension between Ammianus' roles as soldier and author, examining how his military experience affected his history, and conversely how his knowledge of literature affected his descriptions of the Roman army"--
