    Abstract: "Die Autopreise in Europa sind durch große und beständige Unterschiede zwischen Ländern gekennzeichnet. Ziel dieses Beitrages ist es, diese Preisstreuung zu erklären. Anhand eines Paneldatensatzes für den Zeitraum von 1980 bis 1993 wird erstens aufgezeigt, daß signifikante Unterschiede in qualitätsangepaßten Peisen zwischen den Ländern bestehen, wobei Italien und Großbritannien die teuersten Märkte aufweisen. Zweitens lassen sich beträchtliche Schwankungen von Jahr zu Jahr feststellen, die vor allem auf Wechselkursveränderungen und unvollständige Reaktionen bei der lokalen Preissetzung zurückzuführen sind. Diese Sachverhalte werden im Rahmen eines Mehrprodukt- Oligopol-Modells mit Produktdifferenzierung analysiert. Das Modell identifiziert drei potentielle Quellen für internationale Preisunterschiede: Preiselastizitäten, die unterschiedliche Gewinnspannen erzeugen, Kosten- und Importquotenbeschränkungen.     Abstract: "In diesem Arbeitspapier wird der Einfluß einer dynamischen Spezifikation auf die Schätzung des Verhaltensparameters in einem oligopolistischen Marktes untersucht. Verschiedene empirische Studien haben gezeigt, daß die Halbleiterindustrie, im speziellen der Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) Markt, von dynamischen Elementen wie Learning-by-doing in Unternehmen und Learning spillovers zwischen Unternehmen geprägt ist. Das wirft die Frage auf, ob sich Unternehmen in einem dynamischen Sinne strategisch verhalten und wie open-loop beziehungsweise closed-loop als Gleichgewichtskonzepte die Größe der geschätzten Parameter verändern. In diesem Papier wird ein strukturelles oligopolistisches Modell in einem dynamischen Kontext betrachtet, indem Unternehmen Mengen setzten und Learning-by-doing und Learning spillovers relevant sind.     Abstract: "I study Cournot competition under incomplete information about demand while assuming that market price must be non-negative for all demand realizations. Although this assumption is very natural, it has only rarely been made in the earlier literature. Yet it has important economic consequences: (1) multiple (symmetric, pure strategy) equilibria can exist, despite the fact that demand and cost are linear; and (2) expected total surplus can be larger when the firms do not know demand than when they do, a result which has important implications for the social desirability of information sharing. The arguments of the paper are relevant also for price competition and for uncertainty about, e.g., cost or the number of firms, and these issues are discussed." (author's abstract)

    Abstract: "In this study we derive a structural econometric model of learning by doing with multiproduct competition from a dynamic oligopoly game. We show the importance to account for multiproduction effects through product differentiation when measuring learning by doing. Using quarterly firm-level data for the dynamic random access memory semiconductor industry, we provide evidence that accounting for multiproduction results in lower learning effects and firms behaving more competitive in the product market. We can confirm that firms follow intertemporal production plans for investing in future cost reductions. We also find that learning effects are higher at the beginning of the life cycle."     Abstract: "Consumer prices in many markets are persistently dispersed both across retail outlets and over time. While the cross sectional distribution of prices is stable, individual stores change their position in the distribution over time. It is a challenge to model oligopolistic price adjustment to capture these features of consumer markets. In belief based models of price adjustment stores react to expected profits. The expectations are based on the observed vector of market prices in the previous periods. In a reinforcement model of price adjustment, if a strategy has proven fruitful in the past, it is apt to be the strategy relied upon at the present. We collect price data on a homogeneous consumer product in Israel. We estimate the structural parameter of the models. We find that the reinforcement model describes the data better than the belief based models." (author's abstract)

    Abstract: "This paper examines how unionization structures that differ in the degree of wage centralization affect firms' incentives to increase labor productivity. We distinguish three modes of unionization with increasing degree of centralization: 1. 'decentralization' where wages are determined independently at the firm-level; 2. 'coordination' where an industry union sets individual wages for all firms at the firmlevel; 3. 'centralization' where a uniform wage rate is set for the entire industry. We show that firms' investment incentives are largest under complete centralization. However, investment incentives are non-monotone in the degree of centralization so that 'decentralization' carries higher investment incentives than coordination'. Depending on the innovation outcome, workers' wage bill is maximized under 'centralization' if firms' productivity differences remain small. Otherwise, workers prefer an intermediate degree of centralization, which holds innovative activity down at it

Es wird gezeigt, daß Firmen in der Lage sind, den Gesamtprofit allein auf der Grundlage privater und gemeinschaftlicher Information zu maximieren. Sie können zur 'richtigen' Absprache des Preises gelangen, ohne die Nachfrage- oder Gewinn-Funktion zu kennen. Die Absprache stellt einen natürlichen Gleichgewichtspunkt dar, ungeachtet asymmetrischer Verhältnisse.     Abstract: "This paper provides a conceptual framework of multilateral bargaining in a bilaterally oligopolistic industry to analyze the motivations for horizontal mergers, technology choice, and their welfare implications. We first analyze the implication of market structure for the distribution of industry profits. We find that retailer mergers are more likely (less likely) if suppliers have increasing (decreasing) unit costs, while supplier mergers are more likely (less likely) if goods are substitutes (complements). In a second step we explore how market structure affects suppliers' technology choice, which reflects a trade-off between inframarginal and marginal production costs. We find that suppliers focus more on marginal cost reduction if (1) retailers are integrated and (2) suppliers are non-integrated. In a final step we consider the whole picture where both market structure and (subsequent) technology choice are endogenous. Analyzing the equilibrium market structure, we find cases

    Abstract: "Der Aufsatz untersucht mit einem Auktionsmodell des Bankenwettbewerbs den Zusammenhang zwischen der Anzahl der im Wettbewerb stehenden Banken, der Qualität der zu finanzierenden Firmen und den Anreizen der Banken, Kreditwürdigkeitsprüfungen durchzuführen. Es wird gezeigt, daß, wenn man die Kosten des Informationserwerbs mit in Betracht zieht, die Wohlfahrt mit der Anzahl der Wettbewerber sinken kann. Im Allgemeinen erzeugt eine höhere Anzahl von Banken mehr Wohlfahrtsgewinn mit Firmen von schlechter Qualität, wohingegen ein engeres Bankenoligopol bessere Ergebnisse mit sehr guten Firmen erzielt."     Abstract: "We examine how a downstream merger affects input prices and, in turn, the profitability of such a merger under Cournot competition with differentiated products. Input suppliers can be interpreted as ordinary upstream firms, or trade unions organising workers. If the input suppliers are plant-specific, we find that a merger is more profitable than in a corresponding model with exogenous input prices. In contrast to the received literature, we find that it can be more profitable to take part in a merger than being an outsider. For firm-specific input suppliers, on the other hand, results are reversed. We apply our model to endogenous merger formation in an international oligopoly, and show that the equilibrium market structure is likely to be characterised by cross-border merger."     Abstract: "In many intermediate goods markets buyers and sellers both have market power. Contracts are usually long-term and negotiated bilaterally, codifying many elements in addition to price. We model such bilateral oligopolies as a set of simultaneous Rubinstein-Stahl bargainings over contracts specifying price and quantity, between pairs of buyers and sellers. Equilibrium quantities are efficient regardless of concentration. The law of one price does not hold. Prices depend on concentration of capital and concentration of sales. If the quantity sold represents a small share of both the firms' sales and purchases, the price is close to the Walrasian price." (author's abstract)

    Abstract: "This paper presents a model of takeover incentives in an oligopolistic industry, which, in contrast to previous approaches, takes both insiders' and outsiders' gains from an increase in industry concentration into account. Our main application is to compare takeover incentives in a differentiated Cournot and Bertrand oligopoly model with linear demand and costs. We provide a complete analysis for arbitrary numbers of firms, complements and substitutes, and degrees of product differentiation. An increase in concentration is more likely under Cournot competition if products are complements and more likely under Bertrand competition if products are substitutes. Moreover, as products become closer substitutes, a takeover becomes more likely under Bertrand and less likely under Cournot competition." (author's abstract)

    Abstract: "This paper gives conditions under which vertical separation is chosen by some upstream firms, while vertical integration is chosen by others in the equilibrium of a symmetric model. A vertically separating firm trades off fixed contracting costs against the strategic benefit of writing a (two-part tariff, exclusive dealership) contract with its retailer. Equilibrium coexistence emerges when observable and non-renegotiable contracts are offered to downstream Cournot oligopolists that supply close substitutes. The scope for equilibrium coexistence diminishes when assumptions on contract observability and commitment are relaxed." (author's abstract)
