Above all, the Francophone and Germanic cases are examined to explore how literature has played a founding role in the constitution processes of modern nations, notably in the absence of national political structures. This differs from other contexts in which literature has become an important attribute of a politically constituted nation.

    It is the Renaissance that equated painting and poetry, following Horace’s: ut pictura poesis, this equality being grounded in a mimetic principle. While this position had been defended by Batteux, it was Abbé du Bos who, following an aesthetic theory based on eff ects, compared the specifi c medium of each art, with a refl ection on the character of their diff erent signs. Diderot went even further, when defi ning beauty as creation of an illusion, though the means to achieve this creation were radically diff erent. Like Diderot, Lessing defends the thesis of the superiority of literature, since it is capable of transmitting atemporality while the visual arts, in as much as they are spatial, immobilize a specifi c moment.

    Le Premier Homme, der letzte Roman Camus, der als Fragment 1994 publiziert wurde, ist vom Inhalt her sehr stark autobiographisch geprägt, nicht aber von der Form her. Le Premier Homme ist ein Roman der Wiederkehr : zurück zur Welt der Kindheit und der Jugend in Algerien, zurück zur Mutter, aber auch Suche des Vaters, des Ursprungs, der Kolonialgeschichte. Der Roman kann so als Ursprungsmythos gelesen werden. Mit Le Premier Homme knüpft Camus an seine ersten Texte an, die er 1937 unter dem Titel L’Envers et l’Endroit veröffentlichte. Der Mythos, der hier im Zentrum steht, ist der von Adam. Adam ist der Archetyp des Vaters un der Vorfahren. Im Unterschied zu den früheren Werken wird die Lücke thematisiert, die der Vater durch seinen frühen Tod hinterlassen hatte. Das zentrale Ereignis ist der Besuch des Sohnes auf dem Grab des Vaters, der schon mit 29 Jahren gestorben ist. Der Sohn entdeckt nun, daß er als Überlebende zum Vater des Vaters geworden ist. In der Rückblende wird die Geburt des Sohnes mit dem Anklang an die biblische Geschichte erzählt. Die Suche nach dem Vater führt zu den Substituten des Vaters : dem Primarlehrer und der Großmutter, aber auch zu den Vorfahren am Anfang der Kolonialgeschichte und damit auch zur Gewalt, die mit der Gewalt des Algerienkrieges in Verbindung gebracht wird. Wenn man die Geschichte zurückblättert, findet man nicht nur Adam, sondern auch den „ersten Kriminellen“, Kain. Die Kolonialgeschichte wird so nicht aus einer politischen, sondern aus einer mythischen Perspektive gelesen. Hat die Fatalität das letzte Wort?

    Pierre Bourdieu betrachtet die Entwicklung der Gesellschaft als einen Prozess sozialer Differenzierung im Laufen dessen sich relativ autonome Felder ausbilden. Symbolische Felder bilden sich nach ihm dadurch aus, daß sie die ökonomische Dimension verneinen. Für das literarische Feld waren erst am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts die Elemente vereint, die ein autonomes Feld ausmachen, obwohl der Prozess der Autonomisierung schon zur Zeit der Renaissance begann. Bestimmt wird das Feld so durch die permanente Spannung zwischen dem Prinzip der Autonomie und dem Prinzip der Heteronomie. Autonomie variiert ja nach dem historischen und geographischen Kontext. Die Position der Autonomie meint nicht Rückzug aus der Gesellschaft. Nur auf der Basis der erreichten Autonomie ist es für den Intellektuellen (zum Beispiel Zola anläßlich der Dreyfus-Affäre) möglich zu intervenieren, und dies im Namen universeller Werte, die sein Handeln bestimmen.

    Le terme de „couple franco-allemand“ renvoie à la conception de la France comme une personne. C‘est notamment après la guerre de 1870-71 que la relation entre les deux peuples est vue comme celle d‘une femme innocente agressée par le prussien, incarnation d‘une virilité violente. Avec la réconciliation scellée par le traité de l‘Elysée de 1963, la métaphore du couple franco-allemand est devenue monnaie courante pour exprimer les relations intimes entre les deux nations. La métaphore ne conduit-elle pas, cependant, à trop dramatiser les rapports entre deux peuples, qui obéissent à une autre logique qu‘à celle régnant entre les individus?

    Since the Renaissance there has been a competition between painting and literature. Throughout the 19th century, however, these two realms acquired autonomy, and the history of this process points to the role exerted by the writers when they exercised their art criticism and consacrated themselves in that period. Thus an alliance was created between writers (such as Huysmans) and painters (the impressionists), when both occupied equivalent dominated positions in their respective fields. Under the name 'Symbolism in painting', a whole group was created departing from a literary perspective. Through the decade of 1890, painters began to emancipate from the tutelage of literary criticism and to reivindicate the specifity of painting.
