    The article presents the literary critic Marcel Reich-Ranicki and tries to explain his extraordinary success in Germany. It highlights some qualities of his criticism as well as his special relation to mass media and entertainment. Finally, by going into details of his biography, the text surveys the relation of the Polish-born Jewish critic with Germany and German culture. O artigo apresenta o crítico literário Marcel Reich-Ranicki e também procura explicar o fenômeno de seu sucesso na Alemanha. Aprofunda algumas particularidades de sua crítica, sua relação com a mídia de massas e o entretenimento.     In the following article, we present Sigmund Freud and Vilém Flusser not only as two intellectuals who shared some biographical similarities, but also as two important thinkers of converging propositions. Both critically analyzed the human unease towards individual and cultural differences mediated by the symbolic, and both, each one on his way, tried to propose ways of dealing with the question by emphasizing the creative powers of language and translation to overcome the boundaries of resistance, intolerance and miscommunication. ...     The object of this paper is to attempt a comparison between the perception of the big city by an author of German expressionism, Georg Heym, and the Brazilian modernist Mario de Andrade. The aim is to compare the poetic visions of two cities, Berlin and Sao Paulo, at the beginning of the twentieth century and highlight both, the coincidences and differences in the perception of urban life, based on the ideas of the German sociologist Georg Simmel on the life of man in modernity and the stimulations of nerve impulses.

    Novalis is perhaps the most expressive poet of German Early Romanticism. His ideas, mainly in form of fragments, were strongly based upon Fichte’s theory of magic idealism and are substantial part of his literary work, which presents a mixture of genres such as poetry, rhetoric, philosophical and religious themes and even social aspects. This article will introduce some of Novalis’ personal aspects with the intent of briefly introducing two of his main issues: the concept of Fragment, as exploited in ‘Die Lehrlinge zu Saï’s, and his ideal of a poetic, self referent language.

    The nineteenth century was the scene of deep changes in several areas of society: art, industry, science and others. Officially emerged in 1839, the photographic medium was received, discussed and practiced by many of these areas. This article deals with the arisal and the first receptions of photography in the artistic sphere, considering the shock between painting x photography, the discussion about visible reality and its forms of representation in art. It also reveals the paradoxical consequences of his efforts, namely the fact that while the first and second generation of Hungarian intellectuals returning home from Germany in the early '40s and after the Austro-Hungarian Compromise in 1867 successfully contributed to the building of the modern cultural nation, at the end of the century the generation of émigrés chose Germany on purpose to escape the nationalistic institutional framework of Hungarian culture and sciences.

    [...] Halten wir [...] als Arbeitshypothese fest, dass Jean Paul in seinem zweiten bürgerlichen Roman nach dem "Siebenkäs" einerseits den Gedanken der psychischen Doppelgängerschaft fortschreibt, ihm aber andererseits über die Zwillingsmetapher eine neue, hereditäre und generative Dimension verleiht. Auch wenn das auf den ersten Blick kontraintuitiv erscheint, steht diese Veränderung, wie sich herausstellen wird, für eine größere und größer werdende Unähnlichkeit zwischen den beiden Helden. Der gleitende Wechsel der Metaphern markiert also einen sich schon im "Siebenkäs" abzeichnenden, in den "Flegeljahren" jedoch verstärkt fortgesetzten Entfremdungsprozess der für die bürgerlichen Romane konstitutiven Doppel-Protagonisten.

    Among the different functions that an autobiography might have is the claim for recognition. Some of the former members of the militant German Left from the Seventies have published autobiographical texts in the latest years. In the analysis of Inge Viett's book, the author raises the question of responsibility for her violent aiming at reaching her readers' recognition. Entre as diferentes funções que uma autobiografia pode assumir está a reivindicação de reconhecimento. Vários dos integrantes da esquerda militante alemã dos anos 1970, que romperam radicalmente com a sociedade, publicaram, nos últimos anos, textos autobiográficos. Na presente análise do livro de Inge Viett, a autora discute a questão da responsabilidade de seus atos violentos com o propósito de alcançar o reconhecimento de seus leitores. Zu den diversen Funktionen, die einer Autobiografie zufallen können, gehört das Streben nach Anerkennung. Einige der früheren Mitglieder der militanten deutschen Linken der 70er Jahre haben in den vergangenen Jahren autobiografische Texte veröffentlicht. Die folgende Analyse folgt der Fragestellung, auf welche Weise die Autorin ihre Verantwortung für die Gewaltakte und ihre Forderung nach Anerkennung formuliert

    This lecture deals with the development of the post-war radio drama in Germany. After a short introduction to the genre, we discuss three exemplary radio dramas: Günter Eich’s "Träume", NWDR 1951, typical for the literary radio drama, and "Träume 1951 - Musikalischer Epilog" by Hans Schüttler, NDR 2007, a small play which could be considered as representative of contemporary German audio art. The last example comes from a radio drama following the current pop culture trends. "Eisstadt" (WDR 2005, by Schorsch Kamerun), mixes high and low culture, different speeches and music styles and shows the same political ambitions present in the play "Träume". Recently, the German radio play has been going through a period of revitalization, even though under quite different conditions from those observed in the fifties. O artigo aborda a trajetória da peça radiofônica alemã do pós-guerra. Depois de uma introdução ao gênero da radiopeça, são comentados três peças exemplares: "Träume" de Günter Eich, NWDR 1951, como exemplo típico de uma radiopeça literária, e "Träume 1951 - Musikalischer Epilog" de Hans Schüttler, NDR, do ano 2007, uma obra representativa da Audio-Art contemporânea. O último exemplo é de uma radiopeça pop, "Eisstadt", WDR 2005, de Schorsch Kamerun. Eisstadt, uma bricolagem com a mesma pretensão política de "Träume", mistura a cultura erudita com a cultura de massa e combina os mais diversos estilos de língua e de música. Ultimamente, com a valorização do audio na Alemanha, a peça radiofônica está passando por uma fase de revitalização, porém sob condições diversas daquelas dos anos cinquenta.

    German media theory arises within the field of literary studies at the beginning of the eighties, and has been playing since then a major role in communication and media studies around the world. However, many literary scholars are unaware of the so called German "media turn", which produced important contributions for the contemporary debate on the issues concerning text, media, meaning, perception, and technology. This article presents a discussion of the aforementioned debate, focusing on authors such as Benjamin, Schmidt and Flusser. A teoria da mídia alemã surge no campo dos estudos literários no início dos anos oitenta e desempenha um papel vital no campo da comunicação e dos estudos de mídia mundo afora. Contudo, muitos pesquisadores dos estudos literários não parecem ter consciência do assim chamado "media turn" alemão, que produziu contribuições importantes para o debate contemporâneo acerca de questões sobre texto, mídia, percepção e tecnologia. Este artigo tenta mostrar um panorama desse debate, enfocando autores como Benjamin, Schmidt e Flusser.

    Against the background of the Ut-pictura-poesis-discussion and the crisis of language at the beginning of the twentieth century, the article shows that silent movies used to integrate letters and writing not only for the obligatory title cards, but also, in a wider sense, as so called 'inserts': notes, letters, telegrams, certificates, testaments, etc.. The article analyses movies such as "Der Golem, wie er in die Welt kam" (1920), "Nosferatu" (1922), "Dr. Mabuse, der Spieler" (1922), "Das Wachsfigurenkabinett" (1923/24) and above all Robert Wienes' "Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari" (1920) as examples of a complex and multfaceted mode of relation between picture and writing in the German Cinema of the Republic of Weimar. The famous order You must become Caligari in Wienes' film can be read as a hybrid formula, mixing as well the hypnotic imperative, the rhetoric of persuasion, the language of commercials, combining different discursive energies (medical, political, psychological, economical) of the time. Das Thema stellt sich nicht nur im Blick auf die vom Medium Stummfilm geforderten Zwischentitel, sondern auch im weiteren Sinne. Seine Spannbreite reicht von den sogenannten 'Inserts', konkreten in der Filmhandlung auftauchenden schriftlichen Dokumenten, bis hin zu literarischen Referenzen und Motivkonstellationen. All dies zeigt, dass das frühe Kino als das 'neuere' Medium fortwährend auf das 'ältere', die Schriftkultur, Bezug nimmt, es zitiert und auratisiert, sich ebenso von ihm absetzt wie von ihm herleitet.

    The purpose of this paper is to compare Büchner's medical and literary discourse, namely "Probevorlesung über Schädelnerven" and "Woyzeck". Both texts were written towards the end of the author's short life. The comparative analysis provides evidence that Büchner inverts the notions of subjectivity and objectivity; he lets them 'go on their head', "auf dem Kopf gehn" (Lenz). In his medical lecture, Büchner demonstrates free will, whereas in the theatre piece, especially in the doctor’s scene, he shows the subjection of Woyzeck. As this paper will show, by taking into consideration the political awareness of revolutionary movements like the "Vormärz", it is possible to make a critical reflection about dependency and autonomy of the 'subject of history'. In diesem Aufsatz werden der medizinische und literarische Diskurs bei Büchner miteinander verglichen. Vor allem in seiner Zürcher "Probevorlesung über Schädelnerven" und in seinem "Woyzeck", welche im letzten Lebensjahr Büchners entstehen, scheinen die Begriffe von Subjektivität und Objektivität – in Lenzscher Anlehnung – "auf dem Kopf [zu] gehn". In seiner medizinischen Vorlesung beweist der Privatdozent Büchner, dass es den freien Willen gibt, während er in seinem Woyzeck, insbesondere in der Doktorszene, die Unterdrückung des Protagonisten eindrücklich in Szene setzt. Dieser Aufsatz zeigt somit auf, dass eine kritische Reflexion über die Abhängigkeit und den freien Willen des "Subjekts der Geschichte" auf der Folie der politischen Sensibilisierung in Umbruchzeiten wie im Vormärz möglich wird.

    Since the mid 1980's, a paradigm change has taken place in Translation Studies: the primacy of the text to be translated gradually loses terrain to the reception conditions of the translated text. Such a change brought consequences to the concept of translation competence itself: translation students have to be able not only to show a good command of the languages involved, but also to activate other kinds of knowledge, in order to comprehend the text in the source language, and to design translation strategies which enable them to comply with the requirements of the translation task. The article argues that the systematic application of concepts taken from contrastive linguistics research (German/Portuguese), as well as from text linguistics, can help students to improve their knowledge of the foreign language and guide them in their first steps as translators. The theoretical considerations (Part I) are illustrated by an example taken from a translation course (Part II). A partir de meados da década de 1980, observa-se uma mudança de paradigma na pesquisa sobre tradução: a primazia reservada até então ao texto de partida cede lugar paulatinamente aos fatores que coatuam na recepção do texto traduzido. Tal mudança tem conseqüências para a noção de competência tradutória: dos tradutores iniciantes não se espera apenas que tenham bons conhecimentos das línguas com as quais trabalham, mas também que sejam capazes de, na fase de compreensão do texto a ser traduzido, ativarem outras formas de conhecimento e, na fase de retextualização, traçarem estratégias que lhes possibilitem preencher lacunas adequadas à tarefa de tradução. Este artigo visa a demonstrar que a aplicação sistemática de conceitos da pesquisa lingüística de base contrastiva para o par de línguas alemão-português, bem como de conceitos da lingüística textual, pode contribuir para que os tradutores iniciantes ampliem e aprofundem seus conhecimentos na língua estrangeira, ao mesmo tempo em que são orientados nos primeiros passos da tradução. As considerações teóricas sobre o tema (Parte I) são ilustradas por um exemplo de aplicação (Parte II). Seit Mitte der 80er Jahre hat sich ein Paradigmenwechsel in der Übersetzungsforschung vollzogen: Der bis dahin vorrangig behandelte Ausgangstext tritt nun in den Hintergrund, um den verschiedenen Faktoren Raum zu geben, die bei der Rezeption des übersetzten Textes eine wichtige Rolle spielen. Dieser Wechsel hat Folgen für den Begriff der Übersetzungskompetenz: von angehenden ÜbersetzerInnen wird nicht nur verlangt, dass sie über ausreichende Sprachkentnisse verfügen, sondern auch, dass sie bei der Rezeption des zu übersetzenden Textes andere Wissensbestände aktivieren und bei der Verfassung des Zieltextes Strategien entwickeln, die ihnen ermöglichen, Probleme, die ihnen aus mangelnden Sprachkenntnissen erwachsen, auftragsgemäß zu lösen. Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es, aufzuzeigen, dass die systematische Anwendung von Konzeptionen der kontrastiven Sprachforschung (Deutsch/Portugiesisch) sowie der Textlinguistik im Übersetzungsunterricht dazu beitragen kann, den Studenten sowohl bei der Erweiterung und Vertiefung ihrer Deutschkenntnisse, als auch im Anfangsstadium ihrer Übersetzerausbildung zu helfen. Die theoretischen Erwägungen (Teil I) werden durch ein exemplarisches Beispiel (Teil II) erläutert.

    Die folgenden Überlegungen verstehen sich als ein Versuch, Baltasar Graciáns von 1651 bis 1658 in drei Teilen veröffentlichten allegorischen Roman "Criticón" mittels eines close reading seiner ersten Kapitel auf die aktuelle Kulturtechnikforschung zu beziehen. Interessant könnte eine solche Lektüre im Hinblick auf das Thema "Graciáns Künste" vor allem deswegen sein, weil es mit ihr möglich wird, die Vielschichtigkeit dieser Künste als menschliche "artificios" zwischen "ars" und "techne" zu denken. ...

    Baltasar Graciáns Aphorismensammlung "Oráculo manual y arte de prudencia" (1647) wird häufig als Anleitung zum taktisch klugen Agieren in einer säkularisierten Konkurrenzgesellschaft angesehen, wie es im Übrigen auch das Vorwort bekräftigt, in dem das Handbüchlein als "epítome de aciertos de vivir" apostrophiert wird. Gracián war zwar Geistlicher und Mitglied des Jesuitenordens, dennoch scheint das für den Alltagsgebrauch im Aphorismus komprimierte Wissen des Handorakels keiner transzendenten Größe verpflichtet zu sein. ...
