    International audience ; The very wide applications of LTA zeolites, e.g. tritiated water storage, imply that a precise atomic-scale description of the adsorption processes taking place in their structure is crucial. The zeolite structure seems to have a catalytic effect on the O-2/H-2 recombination during the storage process after water radiolysis. To look closely at the conditions that could bring O-2 and H-2 to this particular point, we have conducted investigations using static DFT and systematic ab initio molecular dynamics calculations. We have investigated the interaction of these two molecules with the sodium cations, on which the adsorption capacity of the Na-LTA zeolite depends. The O-2 and H-2 molecules' behaviour inside the cavities is linked to the Na+ position and availability. The latter is regulated by the presence of H2O which interacts with Na+ in a stronger way than O-2 and H-2. Thus, the adsorption studies of different mixtures (O-2/H2O, H-2/H2O and H-2/O-2) have been carried out to characterise the competition between water and other guest molecules. The absence of an obvious interaction between the adsorbates strongly suggests a potential reaction path involving the catalytic effect of the zeolite. Since we have been able to show that the behaviour of O-2 and H-2 molecules is directly affected by the water coverage rate, the reaction path is very likely to be affected too. These results mark a step towards the description of a recombination mechanism between O-2 and H-2 in a zeolite structure, a crucial issue for such systems involving tritiated water adsorbed in nanoporous materials.

    Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease characterized by the degeneration of upper and lower motor neurons (MNs). We find a significant reduction of the retromer complex subunit VPS35 in iPSCs-derived MNs from ALS patients, in MNs from ALS post mortem explants and in MNs from SOD1G93A mice. Being the retromer involved in trafficking of hydrolases, a pathological hallmark in ALS, we design, synthesize and characterize an array of retromer stabilizers based on bis-guanylhydrazones connected by a 1,3-phenyl ring linker. We select compound 2a as a potent and bioavailable interactor of VPS35-VPS29. Indeed, while increasing retromer stability in ALS mice, compound 2a attenuates locomotion impairment and increases MNs survival. Moreover, compound 2a increases VPS35 in iPSCs-derived MNs and shows brain bioavailability. Our results clearly suggest the retromer as a valuable druggable target in ALS.

    Attractive and repulsive molecules such as Semaphorins (Sema) trigger rapid responses that control the navigation of axonal growth cones. The role of vesicular traffic in axonal guidance is still largely unknown. The exocytic vesicular soluble N-ethylmaleimide sensitive fusion protein attachment protein receptor (SNARE) Synaptobrevin 2 (Syb2) is known for mediating neurotransmitter release in mature neurons, but its potential role in axonal guidance remains elusive. Here we show that Syb2 is required for Sema3A-dependent repulsion but not Sema3C-dependent attraction in cultured neurons and in the mouse brain. Syb2 associated with Neuropilin 1 and Plexin A1, two essential components of the Sema3A receptor, via its juxtatransmembrane domain. Sema3A receptor and Syb2 colocalize in endosomal membranes. Moreover, upon Sema3A treatment, Syb2-deficient neurons failed to collapse and transport Plexin A1 to cell bodies. Reconstitution of Sema3A receptor in nonneuronal cells revealed that Sema3A further inhibited the exocytosis of Syb2. Therefore, Sema3A-mediated signaling and axonal repulsion require Syb2-dependent vesicular traffic.

    Bovine herpesvirus 1 (BoHV-1) is an important cattle pathogen, that may cause rhinotracheitis, abortions and shipping fever. Virus establishes latency in sensory neurons, but periodically could reactivate. Recent studies identified mouse neuroblastoma (Neuro-2A) cells as a novel cell culture model to study factors that regulate BoHV-1 productive infection in neuronal cells. Herein, following BoHV-1 infection in Neuro-2A, a reduced cell viability occurred. Membrane damage and death morphological alterations, features of apoptosis and necrosis, were distinguished in infected cells. In addition, biochemical signs of apoptosis (caspase 3 activation and PARP cleavage) were observed. These results were accompanied by incomplete autophagy due to enhanced amounts of autophagic markers (LC3-II, ATG5 and Beclin 1), in the presence of increased levels of p62. Interestingly, protein expression of viral infected cell protein 0 (bICP0) was detected in Neuro-2A cells, although BoHV-1 inefficiently replicates in these cells, because just low levels of viral yield were found. Taken together, our results suggest that BoHV-1 may exert its potential neurotoxicity through a combined mechanism of necrosis and apoptosis. Moreover, incomplete autophagy occurred during BoHV-1 replication in Neuro-2A cells, which were favourable for viral persistence.

    International audience ; Spark Plasma Sintering is a promising rapid consolidation technique that allows a better understanding and manipulating of sintering kinetics and therefore makes it possible to obtain MgB2-based ceramics with tailored microstructures. Commercial MgB2 powders were spark plasma sintered with an applied mechanical pressure, leading to MgB2 pellets with 99% relative density. The obtained samples show a sharp superconducting transition with an onset at 38.5 K. The critical current density was measured equal to 5.6 × 104 A/cm2 at 20 K under 1 T applied field. Otherwise, the trapped field was also investigated. A 5 mm thick pellet with a 20 mm diameter prepared with optimized processing temperature demonstrated a trapped field of 1.2 T at 15 K and up to 2.5 T at 10 K.

    International audience ; Fe-S cluster containing proteins occur in most organisms wherein they assist a myriad of diverse processes from metabolism to DNA repair via gene expression and bioenergetic processes. Here we used both in vitro and in vivo methods to investigate capacity of the four Fe-S carriers, NfuA, SufA, ErpA and IscA to fulfill their targeting role under oxidative stress. Likewise, Fe-S clusters exhibited varying half-live depending on the carriers they are bound to: NfuA-bound FeS cluster was more stable (t1/2 100 min) than SufA- (t1/2 55 min), ErpA (t1/2 54 min), and IscA (t1/2 45 min). Surprisingly, presence of NfuA further enhanced stability of the ErpA-bound cluster to t1/2 100 min. Using genetic and plasmon surface resonance analyses, we showed that NfuA and ErpA interacted directly with client proteins whereas IscA/SufA did not. Moreover, NfuA and ErpA interacted one with the other. Given all these observations we propose an architecture of the the Fe-S delivery network in which ErpA is the last factor that delivers cluster directly to most if not all client proteins. NfuA is proposed to assist ErpA under severe unfavorable conditions. Comparison with the strategy employed in yeast and eukaryotes is discussed.

    Large differences in COVID-19 death rates exist between countries and between regions of the same country. Some very low death rate countries such as Eastern Asia, Central Europe, or the Balkans have a common feature of eating large quantities of fermented foods. Although biases exist when examining ecological studies, fermented vegetables or cabbage have been associated with low death rates in European countries. SARS-CoV-2 binds to its receptor, the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2). As a result of SARS-CoV-2 binding, ACE2 downregulation enhances the angiotensin II receptor type 1 (AT1R) axis associated with oxidative stress. This leads to insulin resistance as well as lung and endothelial damage, two severe outcomes of COVID-19. The nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 (Nrf2) is the most potent antioxidant in humans and can block in particular the AT1R axis. Cabbage contains precursors of sulforaphane, the most active natural activator of Nrf2. Fermented vegetables contain many lactobacilli, which are also potent Nrf2 activators. Three examples are: kimchi in Korea, westernized foods, and the slum paradox. It is proposed that fermented cabbage is a proof-of-concept of dietary manipulations that may enhance Nrf2-associated antioxidant effects, helpful in mitigating COVID-19 severity.

    Da die historische Sprachwissenschaft ausschließlich über geschriebene Texte als Datenbasis verfügt, wurden insbesondere im Forschungsgebiet der historischen Pragmatik bestimmte Genres identifiziert, die Aufschluss über die Sprechsprachlichkeit vergangener Sprachstufen bieten können. Dem dramatischen Genre der Komödie wird in der sprachhistorischen Forschung eine besondere Nähe zur gesprochenen Sprache zugesprochen. Das Korpus dieser Dissertation umfasst insgesamt 46 Stücke der spätmittelenglischen Mystery Plays, die biblische Episoden von der Erschaffung der Welt bis zum Jüngsten Gericht (komisch) in Szene setzen. Neben der quantitativen und qualitativen Analyse von acht nähesprachlichen Merkmalen (u. a.     Hydrogen storage in MgH 2 is strongly limited by kinetic constraints, so that several additives have been considered in order to improve the rate of hydrogen desorption. The present work is devoted to investigate the effect of BaRuO 3 addition on hydrogen absorption and desorption properties of MgH 2. BaRuO 3 was prepared by solid-state synthesis of BaO and Ru in oxidizing environment. The interaction of as-prepared BaRuO 3 with hydrogen at room temperature was examined by thermal desorption and X-ray diffraction experiments, showing that BaRuO 3 has the ability to uptake hydrogen in the bulk. The hydrogen interaction is discussed with respect to octahedral ruthenium local environment present in the oxide structure. Addition of 1 mol.% BaRuO 3 to MgH 2 was performed by ball milling. Hydrogen desorption properties were investigated by Sievert and DSC, connected with a H 2 detector. The H 2 desorbed from of the nano-structured materials is lower than the theoretical content in MgH 2, due to the presence of a non-reactive MgO layer. A remarkable increase of the H 2 desorption kinetics in nano-structured MgH 2 was observed with respect to bare MgH 2. The activation energy for hydrogen desorption from MgH 2/BaRuO 3 mixture was estimated by Arrhenius and Kissinger methods and a value around 130 kJ mol -1 and 90 kJ mol -1 was obtained, respectively.

    The involvement of GRK2 in cancer cell proliferation and its counter-regulation of p53 have been suggested in breast cancer even if the underlying mechanism has not yet been elucidated. Furthermore, the possibility to pharmacologically inhibit GRK2 to delay cancer cell proliferation has never been explored. We investigated this possibility by setting up a study that combined in vitro and in vivo models to underpin the crosstalk between GRK2 and p53. To reach this aim, we took advantage of the different expression of p53 in cell lines of thyroid cancer (BHT 101 expressing p53 and FRO cells, which are p53-null) in which we overexpressed or silenced GRK2. The pharmacological inhibition of GRK2 was achieved using the specific inhibitor KRX-C7. The in vivo study was performed in Balb/c nude mice, where we treated BHT-101 or FRO-derived tumors with KRX-C7. In our in vitro model, FRO cells were unaffected by GRK2 expression levels, whereas BHT-101 cells were sensitive, thus suggesting a role for p53. The regulation of p53 by GRK2 is due to phosphorylative events in Thr-55, which induce the degradation of p53. In BHT-101 cells, the pharmacologic inhibition of GRK2 by KRX-C7 increased p53 levels and activated apoptosis through the mitochondrial release of cytochrome c. These KRX-C7-mediated events were also confirmed in cancer allograft models in nude mice. In conclusion, our data showed that GRK2 counter-regulates p53 expression in cancer cells through a kinase-dependent activity. Our results further corroborate the anti-proliferative role of GRK2 inhibitors in p53-sensitive tumors and propose GRK2 as a therapeutic target in selected cancers.

    International audience ; Tungsten oxide thin films were grown on different substrates by the conventional process of direct current magnetron sputtering. A series of amorphous WOx (a-WOx) films, with variable stoichiometry and porosity, were achieved with different total pressure (Pt) induced by oxygen flow rate (Q(O2)) variation. The objective of this study is to determine the couple (Q(O2); Pt) necessary to achieve optimal electrochromic performances of WOx and also study the correlation between physical properties and electrochromic performances. The WOx films optical transmittance evolved from opaque to transparent with the increase of Q(O2). A degradation of films refractive index and the increase of their porosity, both mainly due to the increase of Pt, were observed. The Raman spectroscopy indicated the presence of different W valence states in the as deposited a-WOx films. They all contain W4+, but W6+ were found only into transparent or semi-transparent films. A weak peak of W5+ was observed into the semi-transparent film. Electrical properties studied by Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor structures showed a decrease of the oxide capacitance when Q(O2) and Pt increase. The WOx transparent and optically reversible films, deposited with lower values of (Q(O2); Pt), i.e., Q(O2) = 4.5 sccm and 6 sccm, and Pt = 1.13 Pa and 1.37 Pa, respectively, exhibited the highest values of WOx/Si interface traps average density and positive ions density (Nss). The positive Nss reflects the oxygen deficiency amount in the films. These films were resistive to the discoloration process but showed the highest coloration efficiency CE632nm = 44.4 cm2/C and 42.2, respectively. Their coloration times were tc = 19 s and 22 s, and their discoloration times were td = 180 s and 75 s, respectively. They exhibited the highest optical modulation close to Δ T632nm = 76 %

    Background: A number of studies have separately shown that the neuregulin1 (NRG1)/ErbB4 system and NMDAtype glutamate receptors (NMDARs) are involved in several aspects of neuronal migration. In addition, intracellular calcium fluctuations play central roles in neuronal motility. Stable expression of the tyrosine kinase receptor ErbB4 promotes migratory activity in the neural progenitor cell line ST14A upon NRG1 stimulation. In this work we analyzed the potential interactions between the NRG1/ErbB4 system and NMDARs in the ST14A migratory process as well as its calcium dependence. Results: RT-PCR studies have shown that both native ST14A cells (non-expressing ErbB4), as well as ErbB4- transfected cells express low levels of a restricted number of NMDAR subunits: NR1, NR2C, NR2D and NR3B. The resulting NMDAR would form Ca2+ channels characterized by low Mg2+-sensitivity and low Ca2+-permeability, generating small, long-lasting currents. Ca2+-imaging experiments showed slow [Ca2+]i increases in 45% of the cells following 8 μM NMDA stimulation. Basal migration of ErbB4-transfected ST14A cells was unaffected by 18 hrs NMDA incubation. However, over the same incubation time, NMDA was able to significantly enhance NRG1- induced migration. Pre-incubation with the intracellular calcium chelator BAPTA-AM reduced both NRG1- and NRG1/NMDA-stimulated migration, suggesting the involvement of Ca2+ in these processes. NRG1 stimulation of ErbB4-transfected ST14A cells induced a sustained, long-lasting increase in [Ca2+]i, in 99% of the cells. These intracellular Ca2+ signals could be ascribed to both release from intracellular stores and influx from the extracellular medium trough a mechanism of store-operated calcium entry (SOCE). Short-time co-incubation of NMDA and NRG1 did not substantially modify the NRG1-induced intracellular calcium signals.     International audience ; The volume pinning force, F p(max), increases with increasing synthesis or sintering pressure (0.1 MPa–2 GPa) in materials prepared at high temperature (1050 °C) while it stays practically unchanged in those prepared at low temperature (800 °C). The position of F p(max) can be shifted to higher magnetic fields by: (1) increasing the manufacturing pressure or decreasing the temperature (2) additions (Ti, SiC, or C, for example), and (3) in-situ preparation. Grain boundary pinning (GBP) dominates in materials prepared at low temperatures (600–800 °C), while high-temperature preparation induces strong point pinning (PP) or mixed pinning (MP) leading to outstanding properties. In materials produced by spark plasma sintering (SPS), the position of F p(max) is higher than expected for both grain boundary and point pinning. The distribution of boron and oxygen in MgB2 based material, which can changed by additions or the preparation conditions, significantly affects the type and strength of pining.Materials prepared under a pressure of 2 GPa with a nominal composition of Mg:7B or Mg:12B consist of 88.5 wt % MgB12, 2.5 wt % MgB2, 9 wt % MgO or 53 wt % MgB12, 31 wt % MgB20 16 wt % MgO, respectively. Their magnetic shielding fractions at low temperatures are 10 % and 1.5 %, with a transition temperature, T c of 37.4–37.6 K. Although their magnetic critical current density at zero field and 20 K was 2–5×102 A/cm2, they were found to be insulating on the macroscopic level.

    Natural organic matter (NOM, or humic substance) has a known tendency to form colloidal aggregates in aqueous environments, with the composition and concentration of cationic species in solution, pH, temperature, and the composition of the NOM itself playing important roles. Strong interaction of carboxylic groups of NOM with dissolved metal cations is thought to be the leading chemical interaction in NOM supramolecular aggregation. Computational molecular dynamics (MD) study of the interactions of Na+, Mg2+, and Ca2+ with the carboxylic groups of a model NOM fragment and acetate anions in aqueous solutions provides new quantitative insight into the structure, energetics, and dynamics of the interactions of carboxylic groups with metal cations, their association, and the effects of cations on the colloidal aggregation of NOM molecules. Potentials of mean force and the equilibrium constants describing overall ion association and the distribution of metal cations between contact ion pairs and solvent-separated ions pairs were computed from free MD simulations and restrained umbrella sampling calculations. The results provide insight into the local structural environments of metalâˆ'carboxylate association and the dynamics of exchange among these sites. All three cations prefer contact ion pair to solvent-separated ion pair coordination, and Na+ and Ca2+ show a strong preference for bidentate contact ion pair formation. The average residence time of a Ca2+ ion in a contact ion pair with the carboxylic groups is of the order of 0.5 ns, whereas the corresponding residence time of a Na+ ion is only between 0.02 and 0.05 ns. The average residence times of a Ca2+ ion in a bidentate coordinated contact ion pair vs a monodentate coordinated contact ion pair are about 0.5 and 0.08 ns, respectively. On the 10 ns time scale of our simulations, aggregation of the NOM molecules occurs in the presence of Ca2+ but not Na+ or Mg2+. These results agree with previous experimental observations and are explained by both Ca2+ ion bridging between NOM molecules and decreased repulsion between the NOM molecules due to the reduced net charge of the NOMâˆ'metal complexes. Simulations on a larger scale are needed to further explore the relative importance of the different aggregation mechanisms and the stability of NOM aggregates.

    19 pages, 11 figures ; see paper for full list of authors ; A systematic study is presented for centrality, transverse momentum ($p_T$) and pseudorapidity ($\eta$) dependence of the inclusive charged hadron elliptic flow ($v_2$) at midrapidity ($|\eta| < 1.0$) in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27 and 39 GeV. The results obtained with different methods, including correlations with the event plane reconstructed in a region separated by a large pseudorapidity gap, and 4-particle cumulants ($v_2\{4\}$), are presented in order to investigate non-flow correlations and $v_2$ fluctuations. We observe that the difference between $v_2\{2\}$ and $v_2\{4\}$ is smaller at the lower collision energies. Values of $v_2$, scaled by the initial coordinate space eccentricity, $v_{2}/\varepsilon$, as a function of $p_T$ are larger in more central collisions, suggesting stronger collective flow develops in more central collisions, similar to the results at higher collision energies. These results are compared to measurements at higher energies at RHIC ($\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 62.4 and 200 GeV) and at LHC (Pb + Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV). The $v_2(p_T)$ values for fixed $p_T$ rise with increasing collision energy within the $p_T$ range studied ($< 2 {\rm GeV}/c$). We compare the $v_2$ results to UrQMD and AMPT transport model calculations, and physics implications on the dominance of partonic versus hadronic phases in the system created at BES energies are discussed.

    International audience ; We demonstrate that the strong N2 bond can be efficientlydissociated at low pressure and ambient temperature on aSi(111)-7x7 surface. The reaction was experimentally investigatedby scanning tunnelling microscopy and X-ray photoemissionspectroscopy. Experimental and density functional theory resultssuggest that relatively low thermal energy collision of N2 with thesurface can facilitate electron transfer from the Si(111)-7x7surface to the π*-antibonding orbitals of N2 that significantlyweaken the N2 bond. This activated N2 triple bond dissociation onthe surface leads to the formation of a Si3N interface.

    International audience ; The synthesis of (BEDT-TTF)(2)I-3 in the presence of two neutral amphiphilic molecules [N-octylfurfurylimine and 1-octanamine, N-(2-thienylmethylene)] leads to single and aggregated nanoparticles of 2 to 6 nm size. The samples contain highly crystalline nanoparticles of the beta(CO)-(BEDT-TTF)(2)I-3 phase, confirmed by XRD. Temperature dependent resistance and magnetic susceptibility studies evidence the superconducting transition characteristics of the beta(CO)-(BEDT-TTF)(2)I-3 phase. The I-V curve of a single nanoparticle aggregate, measured using AFM, exhibits an expected semiconductor-like behaviour. Thermoelectric studies led to a ZT of 1.47 x 10(-3) at 300 K.

The measurement is performed with the ALICE detector in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt(sNN) = 2.76 TeV in the rapidity range 2.5 < y < 4.0. The dependence of the J/Psi v2 on the collision centrality and on the J/Psi transverse momentum is studied in the range 0 <= pT < 10 GeV/c. For semi-central Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt(sNN) = 2.76 TeV, an indication of non-zero v2 is observed with a maximum value of v2 = 0.116+/-0.046(stat.)+/-0.029(syst.) for J/Psi in the transverse momentum range 2 <= pT < 4 GeV/c. The elliptic flow measurement complements the previously reported ALICE results on the inclusive J/Psi nuclear modification factor and favors the scenario of a significant fraction of J/Psi production from charm quarks in a deconfined partonic phase.

    Diradical molecules are essential species involved in many organic and inorganic chemical reactions. The computational study of their electronic structure is often challenging, because a reliable description of the correlation, and in particular of the static one, requires multireference techniques. The Jastrow correlated antisymmetrized geminal power (JAGP) is a compact and efficient wave function ansatz, based on the valence-bond representation, which can be used within quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) approaches. The AGP part can be rewritten in terms of molecular orbitals, obtaining a multideterminant expansion with zero-seniority number. In the present work we demonstrate the capability of the JAGP ansatz to correctly describe the electronic structure of two diradical prototypes: the orthogonally twisted ethylene, C2H4, and the methylene, CH2, representing respectively a homosymmetric and heterosymmetric system. In the orthogonally twisted ethylene, we find a degeneracy of π and π* molecular orbitals, as correctly predicted by multireference procedures, and our best estimates of the twisting barrier, using respectively the variational Monte Carlo (VMC) and the lattice regularized diffusion Monte Carlo (LRDMC) methods, are 71.9(1) and 70.2(2) kcal/mol, in very good agreement with the high-level MR-CISD+Q value, 69.2 kcal/mol. In the methylene we estimate an adiabatic triplet-singlet (X̃3B1- ã1A1) energy gap of 8.32(7) and 8.64(6) kcal/mol, using respectively VMC and LRDMC, consistently with the experimental-derived finding for Te, 9.363 kcal/mol. On the other hand, we show that the simple ansatz of a Jastrow correlated single determinant (JSD) wave function is unable to provide an accurate description of the electronic structure in these diradical molecules, both at variational level (VMC torsional barrier of C 2H4 of 99.3(2) kcal/mol, triplet-singlet energy gap of CH2 of 13.45(10) kcal/mol) and, more remarkably, in the fixed-nodes projection schemes (LRDMC torsional barrier of 97.5(2) kcal/mol, triplet-singlet ...

    This paper presents a classical molecular dynamics (MD) and metadynamics investigation of the relationships between the structure, energetics, and dynamics of Na-hydroxyhectorite and serves to provide additional, molecular-scale insight into the interlayer hydration of this mineral. The computational results support a model for interlayer H2O structure and dynamics based on 2H NMR spectroscopy and indicate that H2O molecules undergo simultaneous fast librational motions about the H2O C2 symmetry axis and site hopping with C3 symmetry with respect to the surface normal. Hydration energy minima occur at one-, one-and-one-half-, and two-water-layer hydrates, which for the composition modeled correspond to 3, 5.5, and 10 H2O/Na+, respectively. Na+ ions are coordinated by basal O atoms (OMIN) at the lowest hydration levels and by H2O molecules (OH2O) in the two-layer hydrate, and H2O molecules have an average of three H-bonds at the greatest hydration levels. The metadynamics calculations yield activation energies for site hopping of H2O molecules of 6.0 kJ/mol for the one-layer structure and 3.3 kJ/mol for hopping between layers in the two-layer structure. Computed diffusion coefficients for water and Na+ are substantially less than in bulk liquid water, as expected in a nanoconfined environment, and are in good agreement with previous results.

Observed correlations include a {same-side} (relative azimuth $< \pi/2$) 2D peak, a closely-related away-side azimuth dipole, and an azimuth quadrupole conventionally associated with elliptic flow. The same-side 2D peak and away-side dipole are explained by semihard parton scattering and fragmentation (minijets) in proton-proton and peripheral nucleus-nucleus collisions. Those structures follow N-N binary-collision scaling in Au-Au collisions until mid-centrality where a transition to a qualitatively different centrality trend occurs within a small centrality interval. Above the transition point the number of same-side and away-side correlated pairs increases rapidly {relative to} binary-collision scaling, the $\eta$ width of the same-side 2D peak also increases rapidly ($\eta$ elongation) and the $\phi$ width actually decreases significantly. Those centrality trends are more remarkable when contrasted with expectations of jet quenching in a dense medium. Observed centrality trends are compared to {\sc hijing} predictions and to the expected trends for semihard parton scattering and fragmentation in a thermalized opaque medium. We are unable to reconcile a semihard parton scattering and fragmentation origin for the observed correlation structure and centrality trends with heavy ion collision scenarios which invoke rapid parton thermalization. On the other hand, if the collision system is effectively opaque to few-GeV partons the observations reported here would be inconsistent with a minijet picture.
