    Im Vereinigten Königreich gibt es derzeit keine gesetzlichen Regelungen zur Unternehmensmitbestimmung. Unternehmen haben in aller Regel eine monistische Leitungsstruktur mit einem Verwaltungsrat (Board of Directors). Theresa May hatte angekündigt, dass die Arbeitnehmer künftig Vertreter in die Verwaltungsräte entsenden sollen. Von diesem Versprechen ist nur wenig übrig geblieben. Eine 2019 in Kraft getretene Revision des britischen Corporate Governance Kodex hat die Arbeitnehmervertretung in den Verwaltungsräten immerhin wahrscheinlicher als je zuvor in den letzten 40 Jahren gemacht. Börsennotierte Unternehmen sollen nunmehr aus drei Optionen wählen, wie sie die Arbeitnehmerseite einbinden will. In der Praxis wurden bisher aber nur vereinzelt Arbeitnehmervertreter in Verwaltungsräte entsendet. Dennoch zeigt sich, dass Bewegung in die Diskussion gekommen ist. So fordert der TUC, mindestens ein Drittel der Mitglieder des Verwaltungsrats durch die Beschäftigten zu ernennen.

    We study stock market reactions to the Brexit referendum on 23 June 2016 in order to assess investors' expectations about the effects of leaving the European Union on the UK economy. Our results suggest that initial stock price movements were driven by fears of a cyclical downturn and by the sterling depreciation following the referendum. We also find tentative evidence that market reactions to two subsequent speeches by Theresa May (her Conservative Party conference and Lancaster House speeches) were more closely correlated with potential changes to tariffs and non-tariff barriers on UK-EU trade, indicating that investors may have updated their expectations in light of the possibility of a "hard Brexit". We do not find a correlation between the share of EU migrants in different industries and stock market returns.

    This paper examines the shortcomings in the UK government's Brexit negotiation strategy which reflected Prime Minister Theresa May's weak political leadership. The Prime Minister focused on securing the short-term political survival of her government amidst turbulent and fractious domestic politics, over negotiations with the EU27. Brexit negotiations were poorly planned and the government was woefully unprepared. Brexit also threatens a serious re-opening of old wounds in Northern Ireland, as debate grows around the prospect of a united Ireland inside the EU. UK politics is in turmoil and in a chronic crisis. What route the Brexit saga takes next is uncertain. But the crossroads is approaching − either the UK leaves on 31 October 2019 with no deal or it finds a route towards an accommodation with the EU. The phenomenon of British exceptionalism towards the EU is set to take a new dramatic turn, while the UK's chaotic political divisions will not disappear any time soon.

    In the United Kingdom there are currently no statutory regulations on company workers' participation. Generally speaking, UK companies have a monistic governance structure with a board of directors. Theresa May (former prime minister) announced that in future workers were to have representatives on the board, but little of this promise seems to have been realised. Nevertheless, a revision of the British corporate governance code that came into force in 2019 makes the prospect of workers' representation on boards of directors more likely than at any time in the past 40 years. Listed companies will henceforth be able to choose between three options for involving the employees. In practice, only the occasional workers' representative has been appointed to a board of directors, but new life does seem to have been injected into the debate and the TUC is now calling for at least one-third worker representation on the board of directors.

    This chapter draws on Judith Butler’s (2009) theorization on the uneven distribution of grievability and Achille Mbembe’s (2003) notion of necropolitics to explain different forms of subjugation to the power of death and mourning in contexts where citizens are deprived of their rights and transformed into trespassers. Theresa May’s policy of stripping terror suspects of their British citizenship is one of such contexts inspiring Kamila Shamsie’s Home Fire (2017), written in a context of Islamophobia and oppressive counter-terror politics. The chapter explores the writer’s challenge to utopian discourses on cosmopolitanism and border-crossing through her depiction of characters subjected to legal ambiguity and statelessness. Yet, it proposes that Shamsie’s postcolonial rewriting of Sophocles’s Antigone be understood in light of Butler’s (2016) rethinking of vulnerability and resistance, as it is precisely through the invocation of this rebellious figure that patronizing discourses defining the vulnerable subject (identified in the novel as female, Muslim, and immigrant) can be dismantled. Contesting orientalist and masculinist assumptions, Home Fire opens up new configurations of racialized and gendered vulnerabilities defying the dominant hierarchies of corporeal value that this chapter examines by focusing on Shamsie’s enactment of embodied interventions, transgressive expressions of mourning, and different forms of resistance to institutional violence.

    Holman et al. (2022; HMZ) propose women (compared to men) political leaders experience significant drops in public approval ratings after a transnational terrorist attack. After documenting how survey-based evaluations of then-Prime Minister Theresa May suffered after the 2017 Manchester Arena attack, HMZ assemble a country-quarter level panel database to explore the generality of their hypothesis. They report evidence suggesting women (compared to men) leaders systematically experience decreased public approval rates after major transnational terrorist attacks (p-value of 0.020). We find that result disappears once any of the following adjustments is implemented: (i) excluding election quarter covariates (p = 0.104); (ii) correcting objective coding errors in the election quarter covariates (p = 0.058); (iii) excluding the May-Manchester observation (p = 0.098); or (iv) clustering standard errors at the country level (p = 0.558). Exploring all 25 combinations of the five control groups HMZ incorporate in their specification, none of them clears the 5% threshold of statistical significance once the corrected election quarter variables are employed. We conclude that the empirical evidence does not provide sufficient support for HMZ's abstract claim that "conventional theory on rally events requires revision: women leaders cannot count on rallies following major terrorist attacks.

    Brexit poses a profound challenge to the economic fortunes of the City of London. Recognising this, the UK financial sector campaigned for a Remain vote in the June 2016 EU referendum, and has subsequently lobbied for a "soft" Brexit policy to guarantee continued access to the EU's single market. Despite this, the newly-formed government led by Theresa May has pursued a "hard" Brexit policy which will see the UK withdraw from both the single market and customs union. This is puzzling because it is potentially highly damaging for the UK national business model, characterised by a large, internationalised and competitive financial sector that is dependent on exports to the EU. How can we explain the City's apparent failure to influence the UK's Brexit policy? We argue that while the UK financial sector continues to wield formidable "latent" structural power, its capacity to translate this into instrumental forms of influence within government has been constrained by three factors. First, the high political salience of Brexit has reduced the effectiveness of City lobbying, which traditionally operates through closed networks of influence. Second, institutional reform within government has challenged the traditional City-Treasury-Bank of England "nexus", thereby weakening the representation of the City's interests within government. Third, the City itself is deeply divided on this Brexit issue, constraining the industry's capacity to organise collectively to influence policy makers.

    The paper initially explains some fundamentals of interactive decision-making (“game theory”) and then applies different approaches of game theory to different aspects of Brexit. The first analysis perceives the 2016 referendum as a “simple voting game” and challenges the view that the observed outcome of about 52% percent in favor of Brexit have to be interpreted that the “vox populi” (and, thus, also the “vox dei”) is in favor of a “no-deal” Brexit. Rather, there seem to have existed three camps among the voters, of whom 25% have actually opted for a no-deal Brexit, whereas 27% seem to have approved Brexit in the expectation of a sensible deal. Hence, the 48% who favored “remain” have been by far the largest homogeneous group, although they fall short of an absolute majority. Social choice theory shows that, in a situation without an option supported by a clear majority, no aggregation procedure – such as majority voting or pairwise binary voting – exists that guarantees collective rationality (Arrow theorem) or satisfies some desirable properties (Gibbard-Satterthwaite theorem). The next analysis scrutinizes the hypothesis that the observed outcome of the referendum was due to the “remainers’” failure to participate. The economic theory of voter participation explains intermediate participation rates as a mixed strategy equilibrium. For the two or three groups mentioned above, the incentives to participate were different. The third model section takes a closer look at the negotiations between the UK and the EU, focusing on the transition from Theresa May to Boris Johnson. A simple Nash bargaining model demonstrates that the bargaining outcome may depend on the preferences of the delegate who negotiates on behalf of the represented party. Switching from one delegate to another, hence, may lead to a more favorable outcome. A final section discusses existing literature on game theoretic analysis of Brexit, which essentially deals with various non-cooperative bargaining models.

    Als Folge des Brexit steht eine Neuausrichtung der Handelsbeziehungen zwischen dem Vereinigten Königreich mit der Europäischen Union ganz oben auf der politischen Agenda der britischen Regierung. Hiervon wären insbesondere auch die deutschen Agrar- und Nahrungsmittelmärkte betroffen, für die das Vereinigte Königreich (VK) einen bedeutsamen Handelspartner darstellt. Um die möglichen Auswirkungen eines Brexit auf die deutsche Agrar- und Nahrungsmittelindustrie abzuschätzen, wurde in dieser Studie mit einem Handelsmodell ein ,,Extremszenario‘‘ berechnet, bei dem sowohl das VK als auch die EU MFN-Zölle auf ihre jeweiligen Importgüter erheben. Dies hätte zur Folge, dass zwischen der EU und dem VK in etwa die gleichen Zölle herrschen würden, wie derzeit beispielsweise zwischen USA und China. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass sich der Agrarhandelsüberschuss mit dem Vereinigten Königreich in diesem Szenario um 700 Mio. € verringern würde. Legt man den Fokus auf einzelne Güter-gruppen, wird deutlich, dass die heimische Schweine- und Geflügelfleisch- sowie die Milch-industrie zusammen mit den vorgelagerten Lieferbereichen am stärksten von einem Brexit betroffen wären. Durch den Rückgang der Handelsmengen bedingt, sinkt der Produktionswert von Schweine- und Geflügelfleisch um über 2 % und der von Milchprodukten um über 1 %. In the wake of Brexit the readjustment of the British trade relations with the rest of the EU is of high priority to the British government led by Theresa May. Being an important trading partner for agri-food products, Germany would by highly impacted by a Brexit. To investigate the possible impact of a Brexit on the German agri-food sectors we employ a computable general equilibrium model and assume the reciprocal implementation of MFN tariffs by the EU and the UK as an extreme scenario. This implies that UK and EU would charge the same tariffs on each others’ imports as it is the case for trade between US and China. The results indicate a reduction in the German trade surplus of agri-food products with the UK of about 700 Mio. €. Looking at the different sectors it becomes clear that the local pig and poultry as well as the milk industry are harmed most by a Brexit. The reduction in trade value causes a decrease in production value of more than 2 % of pig and poultry meat and of 1 % for dairy products.
