    Although the influence of Homer on Western literature has long commanded critical attention, little has been written on how various generations of readers have found menaing in his texts. These seven essays explore the ways in which the Illiad and the Odyssey have been read from the time of Homer through the Renaissance. By asking what questions early readers expected the texts to answer and looking at how these expectations changed over time, the authors clarify the position of the Illiad and the Odyssey in the intellectual world of antiqueity while offering historical insight into the nature of reading.The collection surveys the entire field of preserved ancient interpretations of Homer, beginning with the fictional audiences portrayed within the poems themselves, proceedings to readings by Aristotle, the Stoics, and Aristarchus and Crates, and culminating in the spritiualized allegorical reading current among Platonists of the fifth and sixth centuries C.E. The influence of these ancient interpretations is then examined in Byzantium and in the Latin West during the Renaissance. Contributors to this volume are Robert Browning, Anthony Grafton, Robert Lamberton, A.A. Long, James Porter, Nicholas Richardson, and Charles Segal.Robert Lamberton is Assistant Professor of Classics and John J. Keaney is Professor of Classics, both at Princeton University.Originally published in 1977.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Professor Swales concentrates on the roles of plot, characterization, and narrative commentary in novels by Wieland, Goethe, Stifter, Keller, Mann, and Hesse. By pointing out that the goal in each work is both elusive and problematic, he suggests a previously unsuspected ironic intent.     Im Sommersemester 2020 wurden zwei Befragungen an der Technischen Universität Hamburg (TUHH) durch das Institut für Technische Bildung und Hochschuldidaktik (ITBH), die Hamburg Open Online University HOOU@TUHH und das Zentrum für Lehre und Lernen (ZLL) durchgeführt. Befragt wurden Lehrende und Studierende an der TUHH. Die Ergebnisse finden sich unter doi.org/10.15480/336.2833. Basierend auf den Ergebnissen der Lehrendenbefragung wurde eine weitere Befragung unter Lehrenden (18.08. - 06.09.2020) durchgeführt. Die Befragung wurde erneut mit LimeSurvey umgesetzt. Der Aufruf zur Teilnahme erfolgte über Mail an die Lehrenden TUHH. Es beteiligten sich insgesamt 139 Lehrende. Die hier zur Verfügung gestellten Dateien umfassen den Fragebogen Lehrendenbefragung (PDF) sowie die Ergebnisse, welche in einer Präsentation aufbereitet wurden. In the summer term 2020, two surveys were carried out at the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) by the Institute for Technical Education and University Didactics (ITBH), the Hamburg Open Online University HOOU@TUHH and the Center for Teaching and Learning (ZLL). Lecturers (22.04. - 05.05.2020) and students (26.05. - 05.06.2020) at the TUHH were asked to fill out an online-based survey. Based on the results of the survey among lecturers, a second survey (18.08. - 06.09.2020) was conducted.     La serie dei simposi internazionali organizzati dal Centro Studi Sara Valesio – CSSV in collaborazione con varie altre istituzioni culturali, e aperta tre anni or sono presso la Montclair State University nel New Jersey (USA) col titolo Scrittori tra due mondi / Writers Between Two Worlds, è continuata a Bologna con il Simposio Scrittori fra più mondi / Writers Between Worlds. La differenza tra i due titoli rappresenta una modulazione (pur nella sostanziale continuità) della ricerca del CSSV Se nel contesto statunitense il dialogo che raccoglieva le varie relatrici e relatori si riferiva prevalentemente ai rapporti fra esperienze italiane ed esperienze nordamericane, in questa sessione del Simposio il dialogo delle studiose e studiosi si concentra primariamente sulle esperienze europee nel campo della letteratura, della cinematografia e radio, della linguistica e della storia. La tradizione plurilinguistica e traduttologica del CSSV (per cui si sono ascoltate a Bologna poesie e presentazioni in italiano, tedesco, inglese, francese e nederlandese) si inscrive nel suo costante interesse di ricerca per l'attività di intellettuali e artisti che, muovendosi fra mondi in vari sensi diversi, hanno incarnato in esperienze non solo culturali ma anche esistenziali alcuni dei vari significati connessi a questi movimenti.     The year 1999 saw the 250th anniversary of the birth of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Germany's greatest writer. Appropriately, literary scholars within Germany and beyond paid tribute to this remarkable talent. But a number of commentators also noted that Goethe is often revered rather than read, known of rather than known. It is the aim of this study to provide a corrective to this state of affairs. The authors concentrate on the literary work and offer analyses that represent an impassioned, but by no means uncritical, advocacy -- one that seeks to persuade both academic critics and general readers alike that Goethe is one of the key figures of European modernity. To an extent that is virtually unique in modern literature, Goethe was active in a whole number of literary genres. He was a superb poet, unrivaled in the variety of his expressive modes, and in his ability to combine intellectual sophistication with experiential immediacy. He also wrote short stories and novels throughout his life, ranging from theThe Sorrows of Young Werther, to The Elective Affinities. He was also a highly skilled dramatist, both in the historical mode and in the classical verse-drama. Above all else, Goethe is the author of Faust: a workthat attempts -- and achieves -- more than any other modern European drama. Erika Swales is College Lecturer and Fellow of King's College, Cambridge. Martin Swales is Professor of German at University College London.

    Although the influence of Homer on Western literature has long commanded critical attention, little has been written on how various generations of readers have found menaing in his texts. These seven essays explore the ways in which the Illiad and the Odyssey have been read from the time of Homer through the Renaissance. By asking what questions early readers expected the texts to answer and looking at how these expectations changed over time, the authors clarify the position of the Illiad and the Odyssey in the intellectual world of antiqueity while offering historical insight into the nature of reading.The collection surveys the entire field of preserved ancient interpretations of Homer, beginning with the fictional audiences portrayed within the poems themselves, proceedings to readings by Aristotle, the Stoics, and Aristarchus and Crates, and culminating in the spritiualized allegorical reading current among Platonists of the fifth and sixth centuries C.E. The influence of these ancient interpretations is then examined in Byzantium and in the Latin West during the Renaissance. Contributors to this volume are Robert Browning, Anthony Grafton, Robert Lamberton, A.A. Long, James Porter, Nicholas Richardson, and Charles Segal.Robert Lamberton is Assistant Professor of Classics and John J.
