    "Gunter Grass (1927-2015) was Germany's foremost writer for more than half a century, and his books were and remain bestsellers across the world. The Tin Drum was made into an Oscar-winning film in 1979 and the memoir Peeling the Onion in 2006 astounded readers by revealing that Grass had been drafted into the most criminal component of the Nazi war machine, the Waffen SS, in the closing months of the Second World War. He wrote memorably about the student movement, feminism and German reunification, and was a key influence on magic realist authors such as Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Salman Rushdie, as well as the popular novelist John Irving. Grass redefined the role of ̀literary commitment', campaigning as a citizen for the German Social Democrats and helping the anti-Nazi Willy Brandt become Chancellor in 1969. Gunter Grass is the first biographical study in English of this Nobel Prize-winning writer. Das Spektrum des Verständnisses reicht von "Selbstreferentialität" und "Selbstreflexivität" über Umschreibungen wie "Potenzierungen", "metaästhetische Aussagen" und "Metanarration" bis hin zu Definitionen, die eine Störung der Illusionsbildung ebenso voraussetzen wie die Fiktivität des Dargestellten. Im Zentrum der Betrachtung stehen Romane und Erzählungen von Wolfram Fleischhauer, Wolf Haas, Peter Handke, Daniel Kehlmann, Michael Kleeberg, Katja Lange-Müller, Thomas Lehr, Andreas Maier, Giwi Margwelaschwili, Walter Moers, Michael Mettler und Christa Wolf. Der Sammelband enthält "einerseits bisweilen Redundanzen, da die Lektüren dann doch immer wieder an die selben Zitate aus der Metafiktions-Theorie anknüpfen. Andererseits sind mit den zwölf präsentierten Interpretationen Texte entstanden, die in ihren ‚praktischen‘ Teilen auf sehr interessante, aufschlussreiche und lesenswerte Weise tatsächlich die unterschiedlichen Funktionsweisen metafiktionalen Erzählens in der deutschsprachigen Gegenwartsliteratur – von Wolfram Fleischhauer und Wolf Haas über Daniel Kehlmann und Giwi Margwelaschwili bis hin zu Walter Moers und Christa Wolf – ausloten und das Analysepotential des Metafiktions-Rasters erproben" (literaturkritik.de)

    Using examples ranging from nineteenth-century Viennese comedy to Friedrich Dürrenmatt's atomic-age theater, Benjamin Bennett explores what is at stake in the theory of drama; what sort of questioning makes up that theory; and in what direction such questioning leads.Bennett takes as his starting point the inescapably literary nature of theater in the European tradition, theater in its most concrete dimensions: as an institution, as a tradition of ritual or stylized behavior, as a particular type of physical space, as an economic venture. He maintains that, precisely because of its radical categorical disjunction from the domain of the literary, theater in the European tradition has been appropriated as the principal vehicle by which literature repeatedly problematizes itself. Theater, he says, is "the church of literature." Although he is concerned with drama as a literary type, therefore, Bennett does not treat the theory of drama as part of the theory of literature. For the special relation of drama to literature calls into question the whole idea of literary theory as a stable discourse divisible into parts.Bennett considers plays by Nestroy, Schnitzler, Ibsen, Strindberg, Brecht, Ionesco, Genet, Pirandello, Artaud, and Dürrenmatt. He focuses on such theoretical issues as the idea of generic boundaries; the relation between drama and the culture of reading; the relevance between drama and the culture of reading; the relevance of hermeneutic and semiotic views of literature to drama; and the operation of fascism as a literary phenomenon. In conclusion, he frames a problem that his readings have brought to light: at least two separate historical accounts of modern drama are necessary-theories that imply each other, yet remain irreconcilable

    We investigate the impact on firms of joining the S&P 500 index from 1997 to 2017. We find that the positive announcement effect on the stock price of index inclusion has disappeared and the long-run impact of index inclusion has become negative. Inclusion worsens stock price informativeness and some aspects of governance. Compensation, investment, and financial policies change with index inclusion. For instance, payout policies of firms joining the index become more similar to the policies of their index peers. ROA falls following inclusion. There is no evidence of an impact of inclusion on competition

    Firms added to the S&P 500 index join a prestigious and exclusive club. They want to fit in the club, which creates a “keeping up with the Joneses” effect. Firms pay more attention to their index peers after inclusion and their investment, external financing, and payouts comove more with their index peers. These effects do not appear to result from the increased coordination among investors posited by the common ownership literature as inclusion does not cause a decrease in competition. Since index inclusion does not increase shareholder wealth permanently, these peer effects do not appear to benefit shareholders

    We study the effects of stock price informativeness (SPI) on the complexity of executive compensation. Using textual analysis of SEC proxy statements to construct measures of compensation complexity, we find informative stock prices reduce pay complexity. Using mutual fund redemption as an exogenous decrease in SPI, we find when the redemption pressure is high (SPI is low), CEO pay is more complex and more closely linked to accounting performance and peer firm performance. Compensation complexity leads to more excess pay, more perquisite pay, and lower future ROA. Shareholders show concerns about complex pay and require more frequent Say-on-Pay votes

    Panel OLS and GMM-IV estimates indicate that executives respond to the adoption of a compensation clawback provision by decreasing firm risk. The mechanisms that transmit incentives to decisions and decisions to risk appear to be more conservative investment and financial policies and preemptive management of ESG, legal, and cyberattack risks. The stock market reaction to the announcement of a clawback adoption, as well as post-adoption stock and accounting performance, are significantly and positively related to the actual and predicted reduction in firm risk. The reduction in firm risk, arising from adoption of a clawback policy, appears to benefit shareholders

    We explore how lowering labor market frictions for female workers affects corporate performance. Using the staggered adoption of state-level Paid Family Leave acts, we provide causal evidence on the value created by relieving frictions to accessing female talent, for private and public firms. Reduced turnover and rising female leadership are potential mechanisms that contribute to performance gains. Across specifications, our estimates indicate that treated establishments' productivity increases between 4% and 5% relative to neighbor control establishments. The treatment effect is larger when workers are in less religious counties and in those with more women of childbearing age

    Public attention to a firm may provide valuable monitoring, but it may also have a dark side by constraining management's decisions and distracting it. We use inclusion in the S&P 500 index as a positive shock to public attention. Media coverage, Google searches, SEC downloads, SEC comment letters, shareholder proposals, analyst coverage, and lawsuits increase following inclusion. Post-inclusion performance falls and is negatively related to the increase in attention. Included firms' investment and payout policies become more similar to those of index peers and the increase in similarity is positively related to the size of the attention increase

    For Erich Kästner, moral convictions and political action were one and the same. He initially based this stance on a feeling that he saw pronounced in children, artists, and outsiders. The events of the war transformed this conviction, and Kästner became even more political in the fields of literature and journalism after 1945. This volume traces his development between moral politics and political morality. Für Erich Kästner stellten moralische Überzeugungen und politisches Handeln eine Einheit dar. Begründete er die Haltung in seiner Frühzeit auf der Grundlage eines moralischen Gefühls, das vor allem bei Kindern, Künstlern und Außenseitern ausgeprägt sein sollte, so wandelt sich diese Auffassung durch die Kriegserlebnisse. Nach 1945 wirkte Kästner in Literatur, Publizistik und im Rahmen seiner PEN-Club-Aktivitäten deutlich direkter politisch. Die Beiträge des Bandes versuchen, diese Entwicklung zwischen moralischer Politik und politischer Moral nachzuzeichnen.Eine Aufgabe der Beiträge besteht daher in einer präzisen Rekonstruktion des moralischen Emotionalismus Erich Kästners, den er von seiner frühen Lyrik bis zu seinen spätesten Artikeln und Solidaritätsadressen wie selbstverständlich ausprägte und der ohne jede metaphysische Referenz auskommt. Besonders komplex gerät diese Aufgabe, weil Kästners bisweilen rigoristischer Moralismus mit den Instrumenten eines ganz eigentümlichen Humors abgefedert wird, der mehr verstärkend als entlastend wirkt.
