These new tools support writers by helping them manage the complex interrelation between thinking, language use, communication, and text production. We will offer a short synopsis of the principal technological solutions and picture what their pedagogical impact on the teaching and learning of writing might be.     Although all members of EATAW will have their own thoughts on digitalization and, recently, more publications are devoted to this topic, we miss coherent discourses and feel that other contexts (mainly from the IT disciplines) have taken the lead in these discussions. For future EATAW conferences, we suggest placing a strong emphasis on digitalization and would like to discuss which aspects of it should be stressed most. For a first step, it would be great to initiate an exchange on hot issues in teaching and research related to digitalization and explore ideas for future collaboration. Christian Rapp and Otto Kruse will give an introduction to the session and explain the idea of it with a short input about some problems connected to the challenges of new digital tools for the teaching of writing and the question of whether and how much writing teachers should take over control and ownership of the new technology or leave it to the IT and E-Learning disciplines. Kalli Benetos will talk about the need for researchers and educators to put DESIGN and intent before technology in adopting more design-based research approaches to drive technology development and uses, instead of being led by "market forces". Chris Anson will address the following question: What are the consequences - ethical, developmental, rhetorical, and interpersonal - of having computers “read” and evaluate student writing?

    Die Digitalisierung hat in den letzten vierzig Jahren alles auf den Kopf gestellt, was die Gutenberg-Ära uns an Schreibtechniken, Literalitätsformen und Textwelten hinterlassen hat. Nicht allein die Schreibprogramme in unseren Computern waren für diese Revolution verantwortlich, sondern auch die Flut an Innovationen, die im Gefolge von Internet & Co. entstanden sind. Zusammen mit den Neuerungen des Cloud-Computings und Machine Learnings haben wir jetzt Maschinen zur Verfügung, die nicht einfach Schreibmedium sind, sondern das Denken und Formulieren beim Schreiben aktiv unterstützen oder sogar selbst die Textproduktion übernehmen.Wir werden die Entwicklung der Digitalisierung des Schreibens kurz rekonstruieren und dann mit Thesis Writer ein eigenes Tool vorstellen, das zeigt, welche Möglichkeiten die neue Technologie heute bietet. Thesis Writer enthält einen neu gestalteten, virtuellen Arbeitspatz für Schreibende, der eine ganze Serie unterstützender Tools in Klickweite bereithält. Prozessunterstützung, rhetorische Hilfen, Kooperations- und Feedbackmöglichkeiten, Projektmanagement und einiges mehr sind so in den Arbeitsplatz integriert, dass sie den Schreibfluss unterstützen, ohne die Schreibenden allzu sehr im Denken zu unterbrechen.In diesem Beitrag werden wir auch darauf eingehen, welche Dimensionen diese digitalen Neuerungen angenommen haben und wie wir uns in der Schreibdidaktik der Auseinandersetzung mit ihnen stellen können. Wir werden, um in der Metapher des Räumlichen zu bleiben, den Seamless-Learning-Ansatz bemühen, um zu zeigen, wie sich die Kontexte verschoben haben und weiter verschieben, in die studentisches Schreiben eingebunden ist.

    In this demonstration we present a bilingual writing platform called Thesis Writer (TW), designed to help student writers with their first or second thesis and its supervision. TW responds to problems arising of the Bologna reform with a first research-based paper due after only three years where students often are not sufficiently prepared yet. Thesis Writer provides a digital workspace that combines a word editor with several help functions, such as Tutorials, Examples, Phrase-books, Corpus search tools, an Outline function, Note cards, and a Reference Manager. It has been implemented as Software as a Service (SaaS), enabling a significant number of users to work simultaneously and even collaboratively.

    A thesis is the capstone writing experience of almost all degree programs. With the Bologna reform, a BA thesis is required already after three years of study, often leaving students inadequately prepared. In contrast to PhD thesis supervision, BA thesis supervision has attracted limited scholarly attention to date. Advances in computational linguistics and informatics in recent years have led to the rapid development of systems that support various types of writing, as well as numerous sub-processes. Using conceptual alignment as a framework, this study reports the preliminary results of a larger research project on (a) how students and supervisors at the BA level reach agreement regarding a thesis proposal concept, and (b) the impact of new technology on this process.

    Several new digital tools are devoted to supporting thesis writers. Whilst doctoral thesis writing is a well-studied issue, much less is known about thesis writing within shorter Continental European 3-year undergraduate programmes. To equally study and support thesis writing, we created Thesis Writer (TW), a bilingual (English/German) genre-sensitive tool that offers dissertation writers a word processor with additional support at the conceptual, rhetorical, structural, and organisational level, as well as collaborative writing and feedback functionality. The aim of this presentation is to provide both illustrative data and a synthesis of TW’s affordances in structuring student/supervisor interaction when setting up the first thesis project. One practical concern of high significance is the reaction of supervisors to the tool, as it is essential that supervisors not only accept the tool and its philosophy, but that they actively integrate it into their supervision practices. Preliminary observations have shown that they are creative in cultivating their own ways of using TW when developing a thesis structure. In a case study of ten students at a Swiss University, we observed writer-supervisor interactions during their initial and first follow-up BA thesis meetings, each lasting 60-90 minutes. The meetings were conducted and recorded virtually, to determine how they came to an agreement about the topic, and how they ensured that they both understood it in the same way. This kind of “conceptual alignment” involves negotiated intentions and expectations on both sides when creating a basic proposal structure supported by TW. In adjacent qualitative interviews, students and supervisors were asked about their experiences with this procedure and about their reactions to TW. The results show a broad range of interaction patterns and considerable divergence in the way TW is used.

    In this contribution, we draw on methodology from key logging and writing analytics to offer a fresh look at formulation processes. Key logging captures the inscription processes of writers and by analysing and visualizing them, we can draw inferences on decision making strategies during formulation. At the current stage of our work, we are experimenting with qualitative and quantitative evaluation methodologies. Many of our insights concern formulation patterns that seem typical for digital writing and which make it necessary break new theoretical ground relating formulation to technology use and thinking. Our access point to writing processes is the analysis of texts written within Thesis Writer, a tool that allows writing processes to be tracked visually through a time slider, and to be analysed incrementally and statistically. We follow a writing analytics approach that draws on ongoing writing projects stretching across several months rather than artificial writing assignments for research purposes. We selected nine bachelor theses for analysis. Approximately 2,500 logging data events per text with timestamps and incremental text versions were gathered, processed and analysed in an R environment. We present time slider visualizations of text development and provide qualitative and quantitative evidence demonstrating that thinking and writing in digital contexts connect differently than previously assumed. Our data also demonstrates that writers use far more words than remain in final texts. Revision appears to outweigh planning and idea development as writers are caught in continuous re-writing and rearrangement cycles. We see a tendency away from linear writing to patchwork writing, where chunks of words are placed on screen and rearranged until idea development stops. Text progress also appears connected to growing lexical density, showing that new words needed to develop a text are added in successive revision cycles, and that idea development necessarily connects to this lexical enrichment.

    Dieser Beitrag beschreibt die Entwicklung der Schreibplattform „Thesis Writer“, die Studierende beim Verfassen ihrer Abschlussarbeit und Lehrende bei deren Anleitung unterstützt. Der Beitrag erläutert zunächst, vor welchen Problemen Studierende stehen, wenn sie erstmals eine wissenschaftliche Arbeit selbständig verfassen müssen und nach welcher Logik die gewählte digitale Anleitung aufgebaut ist. Der Beitrag bietet einen Überblick über die Vorarbeiten, auf denen das Projekt beruht und stellt einige Schritte des design-based Ansatzes dar, die zu seiner heutigen Form geführt haben. Struktur und Aufbau des Tools werden ausführlich dargestellt, ebenso wie die Hilfsfunktionen, die zusätzlich zu dem Word Editor angeboten werden. Zwei Pilotstudien, die der Evaluation und Weiterentwicklung der Plattform dienen, werden vorgestellt, ehe ein letztes Kapitel darauf eingeht, vor welche Probleme ein solches Tool die Entwicklerinnen und Entwickler stellt, nachdem es fertig ist.

    At European universities, writing is a traditional way of learning, assessment, and independent study, but it is handled in an implicit, tradition-based way that has only recently been contrasted with and supported by a more explicit writing ped-agogy. Still, little systematic knowledge is available about the pedagogical ap-proaches to writing, writing practices, and genres across Europe and much of it is codified in the national languages without correlation to internationally accept-ed terminology and theories. This book explores the writing cultures of Europe, nation by nation, and reports the idiosyncrasies for each respective country. The reports are based on a 17-item topic list used by the authors to collect data be-fore synthesizing the results. Next to writing practices and genres, a high level of emphasis was placed on the structure of educational systems, the languages in use, and the kind of support provided for student writers. Note: This research project has been conducted within the framework of COST Action IS0703 “European Research Network on Learning to Write Effectively”, funded by the European Union.     Thesis Writer (TW) ist eine Web-gestützte Lernumgebung, die derzeit an der ZHAW in Winterthur/Schweiz entwickelt und eingesetzt wird. TW hat die Funktion, Schreibende auf dem BA und MA Niveau beim Verfassen ihrer Abschlussarbeiten zu unterstützen. Dazu bietet TW den Usern ein Schreibprogramm an, das mit verschiedenen integrierten Tools dabei hilft, Abschlussarbeiten zu verstehen, planen, strukturieren und zu gestalten. Zu diesen Hilfen gehören u.a. ein Planungstool, ein Proposal Wizard und eine grosse Zahl an kurzen Tutorials mit Instruktionen für die Aufgaben, die in jedem Stadium des Schreib-/ Forschungsprozesses anstehen. Weiterhin gibt es sprachliche Unterstützungstools, die u.a. aus einer Sammlung von Beispielen, einem Phrasebook und einem Korpus-gestützten Suchinstrument zur Analyse des Sprachgebrauchs bestehen. TW kann individuell genutzt werden, hat aber auch eine Funktion zum kooperativen Schreiben mit der mehrere Schreibende gleichzeitig am Text arbeiten können. TW ist zweisprachig Deutsch/ Englisch angelegt und kann in jeder der beiden Sprachen von L1 und L2 Schreibenden genutzt werden. TW ist besonders dazu geeignet eine grosse Anzahl von Studierenden gleichzeitig anzuleiten und kann für einzelne Fächern adaptiert werden. Die Intention des Systems ist, die Anleitung für forschendes Handeln, wissenschaftliches Denken, Genreverständnis und Sprachgebrauch so miteinander zu verzahnen, dass ein tieferes Verständnis des Schreibens möglich wird. Für uns ist es auch ein Tool der Schreibforschung, das viele Daten über den Schreibprozess liefern kann. Wir werden die wichtigsten Funktionen von TW demonstrieren und dann genauer auf die sprachliche Unterstützung für L1 und L2 Schreibende eingehen. Wir werden unsere ersten Erfahrungen im Einsatz des Tools berichten und geplante Verbesserungen bzw. Erweiterungen ansprechen.

    Thesis Writer is a newly created online learning environment, supporting students in mastering the various organizational, cognitive, social and linguistic demands of thesis writing. Users of Thesis Writer are offered tutorials and organizational aids to anticipate, prepare, plan and write their theses. Conceptually, Thesis Writer has been designed in such a way to initiate self-governed and self-organized learning processes, coupled with peer and tutored feedback, if required. Discipline-specific support can be provided when Thesis Writer is integrated into a particular degree program. New tools have been created to support the formulation process by integrating large discipline-specific corpora from which users can derive linguistic support through an integrated IMS Corpus Work Bench. The demonstration will offer insights into the construction principles and will allow participants to try out the functionality of the main tools. So far, Thesis Writer has been tested by a limited number of individuals, but preparations for use within study programs are now under way. Languages available on Thesis Writer are English and German, but others may subsequently be added. It is hoped that Thesis Writer will help optimize one of the most demanding learning processes by guiding students through the challenging task of creating their first extended scientific or scholarly paper.

    This chapter extends the scope of the term ‘seamless learning’ to include writing as one of the most prominent learning activities in education. The seamless learning concept is used to analyse the ongoing flow of digital innovation with respect to the changing instructional and intellectual positioning of writing in its various contexts. The term ‘seams’ is interpreted as frictions or barriers in the writer’s experience, and the concept of ‘seamlessness’ refers to coherence in the practice and learning of writing. In order to understand the impact of digitisation on writing, this chapter recaps on the major development steps of digital writing technology, before offering an example of an integrated learning platform for the writing of academic theses which intends to offer students a seamless writing experience. The results indicate that the term seamlessness in the context of writing should not be directly associated with mobile learning or to the ubiquitous learning opportunities which are qualities that writing technologies have already offered for some time. Other more recent technological changes have provided considerably greater impact on what the authors term as ‘seamless writing’.
