    Film history meets church history through the ritual of prayers Moments of prayer have been represented in Hollywood movies since the silent era, appearing unexpectedly in films as diverse as Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, Frankenstein, Amistad, Easy Rider, Talladega Nights, and Alien 3, as well as in religiously inspired classics such as Ben-Hur and The Ten Commandments. Here, Terry Lindvall examines how films have reflected, and sometimes sought to prescribe, ideas about how one ought to pray. He surveys the landscape of those films that employ prayer in their narratives, beginning with the silent era and moving through the uplifting and inspirational movies of the Great Depression and World War II, the cynical, anti-establishment films of the 60s and 70s, and the sci-fi and fantasy blockbusters of today. Lindvall considers how the presentation of cinematic prayer varies across race, age, and gender, and places the use of prayer in film in historical context, shedding light on the religious currents at play during those time periods.God on the Big Screen demonstrates that the way prayer is presented in film during each historical period tells us a great deal about America’s broader relationship with religion

    Das kompetitive Spielen von Computerspielen (sog. eSport) hat enorm an Bedeutung gewonnen. Diese digitale Materie stellt daher nun auch Normgeber vor Herausforderungen. Das Werk nimmt sich dieser an und leitet einen deskriptiven eSport-Begriff her, der als Grundlage für taugliche Regulierung dienen kann. Im Anschluss untersucht es das bisherige staatliche eSport-Recht und kritisiert dieses im Hinblick auf die Regelungsweise, den Anwendungsbereich, die Verfassungsmäßigkeit und die Praxistauglichkeit. Im Anschluss werden verschiedene Möglichkeiten dargestellt und bewertet, wie der eSport bestmöglich in das deutsche Rechtssystem implementiert werden kann. Dies hat auch Auswirkungen auf das Sportrecht, da der eSport Fehler in diesem aufzeigt. Competitive gaming ("esports") has gained enormous importance. Therefore, this digital matter now also poses challenges for legislators. This book addresses these challenges and derives a descriptive definition of esports that can serve as a basis for suitable regulation. It then examines the existing state esports-specific law and criticizes it with regard to the regulatory approach, area of application, constitutionality and practicability. Subsequently, various possibilities are presented and evaluated as to how esports can be implemented in the German legal system. This also has implications for sports law, as esports highlights defects in it.

    Lately, due attention has been given to eSports in the academic literature and recent discussions revolve around whether eSports can be regarded as sports. Conceptually assuming that sports and eSports are two entities, we conduct a structural comparison between the two, relying on a theoretical framework of B/Orders in Motion. Apart from identifying an extension to the framework, we provide several theoretical and practical examples to highlight similarities and differences. Furthermore, we reflect that not only borders but also orders are in motion.

In den letzten Jahren hat sich dieses Bild jedoch gewandelt: Viele Spieler sind mittlerweile vertraglich verpflichtet, eSport zu betreiben, und gestalten Ihre Tätigkeit dabei nicht immer frei von Weisungen. Die Untersuchung setzt sich daher zunächst detailliert mit der eSport-Branche und ihren vielzähligen Akteuren auseinander, um anschließend der Frage nachzugehen, welchen Status eSportler im Hinblick auf die verschiedenen Vertragsparteien aus arbeitsrechtlicher Sicht haben. Dabei wird zwischen Profis, Halbprofis, Amateuren und Hobbyisten differenziert. Playing a computer or video game is considered a hobby. Therefore, one would probably not assume that this activity is of legal significance. However, the picture has changed in recent years. Many players are now contractually obligated to engage in esports and are given instructions on how to do so. Therefore, the thesis first takes a detailed look at the esports industry and its numerous stakeholders. Building on this, it examines the status of esports athletes with regard to the various contracting parties from an employment law perspective. Thereby, a distinction is made between professionals, semi-professionals, amateurs, and hobby players.

    Film history meets church history through the ritual of prayers Moments of prayer have been represented in Hollywood movies since the silent era, appearing unexpectedly in films as diverse as Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, Frankenstein, Amistad, Easy Rider, Talladega Nights, and Alien 3, as well as in religiously inspired classics such as Ben-Hur and The Ten Commandments. Here, Terry Lindvall examines how films have reflected, and sometimes sought to prescribe, ideas about how one ought to pray. He surveys the landscape of those films that employ prayer in their narratives, beginning with the silent era and moving through the uplifting and inspirational movies of the Great Depression and World War II, the cynical, anti-establishment films of the 60s and 70s, and the sci-fi and fantasy blockbusters of today. Lindvall considers how the presentation of cinematic prayer varies across race, age, and gender, and places the use of prayer in film in historical context, shedding light on the religious currents at play during those time periods.God on the Big Screen demonstrates that the way prayer is presented in film during each historical period tells us a great deal about America’s broader relationship with religion

    We investigate the impact of participation in physical and mental exercise activities on hirability. Besides by comparing both forms of exercising, we innovate against the existing literature by comparing their impact between different types of jobs, where other effects could be expected. To this end, an audit experiment is conducted in which we send 2184 fictitious applications of young job seekers to real job vacancies. On average, the estimated effect of both physical and mental exercise activities is small and statistically insignificant. However, the effect of participation in any exercise activity is significantly positive for jobs combining low cognitive with low physical demands. These findings are not consistent with the common consideration of physical exercise activities being used by employers as signals of physical fitness and appearance.

    Using data on wrestlers and tournaments since the early 1970s, we study promotion practices in Sumo, a Japanese traditional sport. We show that, especially since 2010, foreign-born wrestlers trying to attain the second highest rank in Sumo were treated less favorably than Japanese born wrestlers. Similar practices, however, do not apply to foreign-born wrestlers competing for the top rank, probably because of the much higher public scrutiny attracted by promotions to this rank. Together with the 2010 Reform that effectively restricted access to foreign-born wrestlers, existing promotion practices may favor the return of Japanese born players to the top rank of the game.

    In 1983 England's fifth-tier football competition introduced a two-points-for-ahome-win and three-points-for-an-away-win reward system. This system was abolished after three seasons. The anomalous point system may have been introduced to reduce home advantage but the reasons are not fully clear and neither are the reasons for abolishing the system shortly after its introduction. We find that the new point system did not affect match outcomes but it did influence match attendance negatively. We speculate that the alternative point system was perceived as unfair to potential buyers of seasonal tickets or individual match tickets some of whom as a response decided to avoid watching the game in person. Consumer perceptions seem to matter.

    Between sports and happiness. Using longitudinal data from the German Socio- Economic Panel (GSOEP), we find a positive correlation between sports participation and reported life satisfaction. This relationship is stronger at younger and older ages than in middle age, and for people in bad health compared to those in average health. We further provide evidence for both causal directions. It turns out that the causal impact of engaging in sports on happiness is about four times higher than the effect of happiness on engaging in sports.

    Wer ein Computer- oder Videospiel spielt, geht seinem Hobby nach. Intuitiv würde man dieser Tätigkeit daher zunächst keine rechtliche Bedeutung beimessen. In den letzten Jahren hat sich dieses Bild jedoch gewandelt: Viele Spieler sind mittlerweile vertraglich verpflichtet, eSport zu betreiben, und gestalten Ihre Tätigkeit dabei nicht immer frei von Weisungen. Die Untersuchung setzt sich daher zunächst detailliert mit der eSport-Branche und ihren vielzähligen Akteuren auseinander, um anschließend der Frage nachzugehen, welchen Status eSportler im Hinblick auf die verschiedenen Vertragsparteien aus arbeitsrechtlicher Sicht haben. Dabei wird zwischen Profis, Halbprofis, Amateuren und Hobbyisten differenziert. Playing a computer or video game is considered a hobby. Therefore, one would probably not assume that this activity is of legal significance. However, the picture has changed in recent years. Many players are now contractually obligated to engage in esports and are given instructions on how to do so. Therefore, the thesis first takes a detailed look at the esports industry and its numerous stakeholders. Building on this, it examines the status of esports athletes with regard to the various contracting parties from an employment law perspective. Thereby, a distinction is made between professionals, semi-professionals, amateurs, and hobby players.
