    Abstract: The article addresses the nature of power relations that sustain and disguise white racial hegemony in contemporary ‘western’ society. Following the insights offered by critical race theory (CRT), white supremacy is conceived as a comprehensive condition whereby the interests and perceptions of white subjects are continually placed centre stage and assumed as ‘normal’. These processes are analysed through two very different episodes. The first example relates to a period of public crisis, a moment where ‘what really matters’ is thrown into relief by a set of exceptional circumstances, in this case, the London bombings of July 2005. The second example relates to the routine and unexceptional workings of national assessment mechanisms in the education system and raises the question whether assessments merely record educational inequity or actually produce it. These apparently divergent cases are linked by the centrality of white interests and the mobilization of structural and cultur

    Abstract: Poetic inquiry offers the opportunity to become intimate with those multiple facets of self that shape our understanding. However, as scholars, even when we engage in creative forms of inquiry, we often find ourselves driven to ignore certain aspects of our identities. To acknowledge the personal within our research is uncomfortable and some have even argued, irrelevant. I believe our stories of the personal are extremely relevant, reflecting a landscape of multiple, fluid, intersecting and often contradictory subjectivities. As scholars, each of us has or will struggle at some point along our journey in relationship to our place within our work of doing research. The struggles may be different, but the discomfort is shared. Across the space of this article I use poetic inquiry to enter into discomfort and uncertainly as I try to make sense of what it means to engage in scholarship as a new mother. Through poetic inquiry my story does not exist in isolation, but instead becomes one

Vor allem Kinder- und Jugendliteraturforschung sowie Literaturdidaktik haben davon profitiert. Doch wie hängen Adoleszenz und Alterität zusammen? Die Beiträger*innen erarbeiten anhand von exemplarischen literatur- und medienwissenschaftlichen Analysen Anknüpfungspunkte zwischen Adoleszenz und interkulturellen sowie postkolonialen Fragestellungen und greifen aktuelle Themen wie z.B. Flucht, Migration, Rassismus oder (post-)koloniale Erfahrungen auf.     Diese Studie geht der Frage nach, wie sich das Medienhandeln von Kindern in der veränderungssensitiven Phase des Schulübertritts gestaltet. Theoretisch bedient sich die Arbeit an medienpädagogischen, sozialisationstheoretischen, erziehungswissenschaftlichen sowie kommunikationswissenschaftlichen Theorien und Ansätzen und ist daher interdisziplinär ausgerichtet. Zur Beantwortung der Forschungsfragen wurde ein innovatives multi-methodisches Design gewählt. Zum Einsatz kamen ein Tagebuch sowie Leitfadeninterviews. Die Befunde zeigen eine Transformation des Medienhandelns u. a. durch veränderte Tagesstrukturen. Ebenso hat sich die Bedeutsamkeit des Smartphones im Kontext des Schulübertritts herauskristallisiert. This study examines how children use modern media while experiencing the change-sensitive phase of transitioning from primary school to secondary education. Theoretically, the work is based on theories and approaches from media education, socialisation theory, educational science and communication science, and is therefore interdisciplinary. An innovative multi-methods design was chosen to address the research questions, which involved the use of a diary as well as guided interviews. The study’s findings reveal a transformation in children’s usage of such media due to changes in their daily routines, among other things. Moreover, the importance of smartphones in this context became strikingly clear.

    Die Studie entwickelt eine medienbiografische Perspektive auf Smartphone-Fotopraktiken in der Adoleszenz. Sie fragt nach ihrer Relevanz für Biografiearbeit als Teil der Identitätsentwicklung und beleuchtet Praktiken vor dem Hintergrund medienbiografischer Erfahrungen. Biografizität und visuelle Kompetenz werden als Bildungsziele der Medienpädagogik reflektiert. Anhand der dokumentarischen Methode wurden hierzu Interviews und Fotografien der interviewten Jugendlichen interpretiert, wobei die Kommunikationskontexte sozialer Medien systematisch einbezogen wurden. Hieraus ging die Typologie ‚visuelle Biografiearbeit‘ hervor, die milieuspezifisch unterschiedliche Formen fotografiebezogener Kommunikations- und Biografisierungsprozesse offenlegt. This study develops a media biographical perspective on adolescents’ use of smartphones for photography. It investigates smartphones’ relevance in biographical work as part of identity development and examines their use against the background of media biographical experiences, while also reflecting on biographicality and visual literacy as goals of media pedagogy. Using the documentary method, the author interprets interviews with and photographs of young people, while systematically incorporating the communication contexts of social media. This results in the typology of 'visual biographical work', which reveals milieu-specific forms of communication and biographical processes related to photography.

    The Chicago critics, a group of academics that gathered around Ronald S. Crane in the early 1930s, tackled questions that are still relevant today: What is more important — humanistic general education or vocational specialisation? How should a university define its function in the context of an industrial, technological and pluralistic democratic society? What kind of knowledge can the humanities contribute to the development of the individual and to society as a whole? While the Chicago critics’ conceptual apparatus is modelled on Aristotle’s Poetics, it is significant that their formal literary analysis appears within the context of a defence of the humanities as (humanistic) disciplines or the (liberal) arts which aim at ethical as well as aesthetic education, thus forming value standards that help individuals to find orientation.

    This book explores how different European education systems manage multilingualism. Each chapter focuses on one of ten diverse settings (Andorra, Asturias, the Basque Country, Catalonia, England, Finland, France, Latvia, the Netherlands and Romania) and considers how its education system is influenced by historical, sociolinguistic and legislative and political processes and how languages are handled within the system, stressing the challenges and opportunities in each area of study. The chapters provide the reader with insights around three key aspects: the management of the guarantee of the rights of regional language minorities; the incorporation of the language background inherited by immigrants living in Europe (whether they are European citizens or not) and the need to promote the learning of international languages.     This edited collection explores the immense potential of translanguaging in educational settings and highlights teachers and students negotiating language ideologies in their everyday communicative practices. It makes a significant contribution to scholarship on translanguaging and considers the need for pedagogy to reflect and embrace diversity. The chapters provide rich empirical research and document translanguaging in varied educational contexts, with studies from pre-school to adult education in different, mainly European, countries, where English is not the dominant language. Together they expand our understanding of translanguaging and how it can be applied to a variety of settings.     We take advantage of a major compulsory school reform in Turkey to provide novel evidence on the causal effect of education on both the incidence and timing of internal migration. In addition, for the first time in literature, we provide causal effects of education on migration by reason for migration. We find that while education substantially increases the incidence of migration among men, there is no evidence of an effect among women. Women, however, become more likely to migrate at earlier ages and their migration reasons change. Revealing the empowering role of education, women become more likely to move for human capital investments and for employment purposes and less likely to be tied-movers.

    Despite being one of the smallest countries in the OECD, Israel is marked by significant socio-economic disparities, which have a clear spatial dimension. Ethnic and religious groups with weak socio-economic outcomes are not benefitting from the thriving high-tech sector in the centre of the country. As a result, there is a persistent lack of employment opportunities in the peripheral areas alongside skills shortages in the dynamic centre. Inequalities between municipalities are the highest in the OECD. Moreover, the current pandemic has hit poorer Haredi neighbourhoods particularly hard. The government should reduce barriers that prevent segments of the population from fully participating in the economic process and give everyone a similar chance to succeed, regardless of where he or she was born. This will require equal access to high-quality education, affordable housing, reasonable public transportation and improved urban planning in every municipality to reduce spatial divides and segregation of disadvantaged households. Local authorities can play a significant role, since good municipal government and effective policies to achieve national priorities are the best means to improve the outcomes of residents of poor areas.

    Reducing poverty remains an important challenge, and the COVID-19-crisis may further reinforce social vulnerabilities. Although it has declined lately, relative poverty remains high in international comparison and is distributed unevenly across population groups with the elderly, people with disabilities, lone parents, the low-educated and the unemployed being particularly affected. A comprehensive approach is required to ensure an effective transition out of poverty and social exclusion. Reforms should strengthen income protection by ensuring that cash benefits provide adequate and tailored support to those in need. An individual-based approach is also essential for the provision of social services to reduce deficits in important areas such as social housing and long-term care for the elderly. Equity in educational opportunity and outcomes could be strengthened further, starting at the early school years, as not all children benefit from early childhood education and care services. Progress in this domain is also crucial for striking a better work-family balance and improving work incentives. More and better quality jobs in the formal sector, especially for the low-skilled, are crucial for reducing poverty. Enlarged participation in life-long learning programmes can help re-skilling and up-skilling towards higher incomes. Increased spending on well-designed labour market activation policies is also important for tackling poverty effectively.

    Regional differences in GDP per capita, productivity, employment and poverty in Lithuania are among the largest in the OECD, and they have increased over the last decade. The country still recovers from the legacy of the Soviet planning system which aimed at balanced geographical distribution of industrial activity and left many unviable firms and jobs particularly in rural areas. Unemployment is high in many regions, while mobility of excess labour towards economically stronger areas remains insufficient. Some regions feature "surplus infrastructure", while others lack investment. This paper looks at potential reasons for persisting disparities and assesses recent policy initiatives to reduce them. Stark gaps in education outcomes between rural and urban areas should be addressed, mainly by reorganising the municipal school network and by fostering firm-based learning, i.e. apprenticeships. The digital infrastructure is weak in rural regions and should be strengthened to allow access to high-quality jobs in all parts of the country, including through teleworking. Housing supply in economically strong areas should be increased, while urban sprawl should be avoided. Finally, municipal governments should be given more fiscal power, while the planned functional regions should help foster inter-municipal coordination.

    Teacher absenteeism and shirking are common problems in developing countries. While monitoring teachers should ameliorate those problems, mobilizing parents to do so often leads to small or even negative effects on learning outcomes. This paper provides causal evidence that this might result from non-monotonic effects of monitoring teachers. Cross-randomizing nudges to teachers and parents in Ivory Coast - to motivate and monitor teachers directly, and to mobilize parents -, we find that, in schools where parents are nudged, numeracy and literacy test scores improve by an additional school quarter, and student dropouts decrease by over 50%. In contrast, in schools where both are nudged, there is no effect on either learning outcomes or dropouts - even though the latter also fall by nearly 50% where teachers are nudged alone. In those schools, teachers show up less frequently, allocate less time to career development, and target instruction to top students to a greater extent than in schools where only parents are nudged. Monitoring backfires precisely for teachers who were most motivated at baseline, consistent with monitoring intensity eventually crowding out intrinsic motivation. Our results have implications for the design of accountability programs above and beyond education.

    This paper analyzes school segregation according to socioeconomic level between public and private schools in Uruguay during the 1992-2017 period. Using microdata from household surveys, the measurements provide empirical evidence of a significant increase in segregation, especially during the last 15 years, for both the primary and secondary education levels. Applying a micro-decomposition methodology to explore the determinants of increasing segregation, the results suggest that changes in the observable characteristics of individuals, mainly the households's income, account for most of the variation in educational segregation experienced in recent decades. Furthermore, a greater propensity to choose private schools seems to have played a relevant role in the observed change, especially at the secondary education level, possibly liked to an increase in the perceived quality gap between both educational sub-systems.
