    This article focuses on the role of violence in Fukasaku Jinji's Jingi naki tatakai (War without a code of honor) series (1973-4). It reviews the formalistic way in which violence was presented in pre-1973 yakuza films and contrasts this with Fukasaku's cinematic style, which broke all the rules of the genre. Fukasaku opted for a highly realistic, documentary approach. This documentary style is examined by considering the prison memoirs of a yakuza gang member and other sources upon which the films were based and then by providing examples of the manner in which Fukasaku translated these written materials into cinematic images. It is argued that, for Fukasaku, the world of the yakuza is only a microcosm of the broader society and international order of the post-war period, in which violence lacks moral significance and exists without heroes. The continued relevance of these films in the light of current events is noted.(Jpn Forum/GIGA)

    Die Beschreibung der Gottesbeziehung Israels als Bund hat in der deuteronomisch-deuteronomistischen, der priesterlichen und der prophetischen Überlieferung des Alten Testaments drei je eigenständige Ausprägungen erfahren. Joachim J. Krause nimmt diese unter besonderer Berücksichtigung ihrer jeweiligen konditionalen Struktur in den Blick. Dabei erweist sich die gängige, binär kodierte Frage nach 'konditionierten' versus 'unkonditionierten' Konzeptionen als unzureichend. Sämtliche im Alten Testament belegten Konzeptionen sind je auf ihre Weise konditional strukturiert. Ferner zeigt sich, dass die Israel betreffende Bedingung in keinem der Fälle auf die Gabe des Bundes, sondern durchweg auf dessen Bewahrung bezogen ist. Es geht nicht um den Eintritt in den Bund, sondern um das Bleiben in ihm. So markant sich die drei großen bundestheologischen Konzeptionen inhaltlich unterscheiden, so wesensverwandt sind sie in diesem einen, theologisch entscheidenden Grundsatz. Modelled on human contracts, in particular political treaties, the theological notion of YHWH's covenant describes Israel's relationship with its God as one designed with deliberation. In light of this, Joachim J. Krause enquires into the conditional structure of the various concepts of covenant in the Hebrew Bible.

    Für Leonard Schrader war es ein langer Weg bis zu seinem ersten Roman The Yakuza, der in zwei Stufen entstand. Zunächst hatte er bloß eine Story: die Idee zu einer Geschichte, in der ein cleverer, aber tapsiger Amerikaner nach Japan kommt, wo er 20 Jahre zuvor schon einmal war, und dort zwischen alle Regeln und Riten fällt. Ihren besonderen Charakter sollte die Geschichte durch die mythische Dimension erhalten, die Schrader im yakuza-eiga, dem Genre des japanischen Gangsterfilms, vorgefunden hatte.
