The studies treat a broad range of topics, including the prehistory of the hexameter, the nature of Homeric formulae, the structure of Vedic verse, rhythm in the Gathas, and the relationship between Germanic and Celtic poetic traditions. The volume contributes to our understanding of the relationship between language and poetic form, and how they change over time

Zugleich sind wenige Sätze in solchem Maße problematisch geworden wie dieser: Denn was könnte uns angesichts der geschichtlichen Erfahrungen ermutigen, den Menschen schlechthin mit dem ›guten Menschen‹ zu identifizieren? Die in dem Band versammelten Aufsätze zu Lessing umkreisen die ungelösten, bis heute aktuellen Spannungen der »anthropozentrischen Wende« – das Drama des modernen, autonomen Selbst, das zur Selbsttranszendierung zugunsten des Gemeinwohls berufen ist und um die Quellen der Motivation dazu ringt: Liegen sie in der Vernunft, in der Triebkraft der Natur oder sind sie doch religiöser Art? Hauptwerke Lessings werden dabei in unterschiedliche Kontexte der europäischen Aufklärung gerückt: von der durch die Erfahrungen des Siebenjährigen Kriegs geprägten Militärdramatik über den Toleranzdiskurs bis hin zur Kritik des Kolonialismus. So ergeben sich neue und aufgrund der genauen Textlektüren sehr konkrete Einblicke in die facettenreiche Kultur des 18. Jahrhunderts.

Responding to the growing interest in the interface between prosody and pragmatics, it presents a collection of papers which use different approaches and data to explore a wide range of interrelated issues in both fields. The second section is devoted to the role played by prosody in the negotiation of speaker change in conversational interaction, with papers by Dagmar Barth-Weingarten, Jill House, Emina Kurtic/Guy J. Brown/Bill Wells and Beatrice Szczepek Reed. In the final section, chapters by Leendert Plug, Elizabeth Couper-Kuhlen and Anne-Catherine Simon/Liesbeth Degand focus on various aspects of interpersonal meaning and how they are conveyed.
