    Die Leser der Offenbarung des Johannes werden eingeladen, in eine Textwelt einzutauchen, in der von einem Kultgeschehen im himmlischen Heiligtum die Rede ist, an dem er selbst Anteil nehmen kann. So will die Apokalypse eine Brücke schaffen zwischen Himmel und Erde, zwischen dem Bereich Gottes und seines Christus und dem Bereich der Erde und seiner angefochtenen Gemeinde. Sie will helfen, eine neue himmlische Wirklichkeit zu sehen, die sonst dem Auge verborgen bleibt. Im Deutungsrahmen dieser kultischen Wirklichkeit kann und soll der Mensch eine neue Orientierung und einen neuen Sinn finden. Mit der Thematisierung der Wirklichkeitskonstruktion und Sinnbildung greift die Arbeit dabei auf die modernen Erkenntnisse wissenssoziologischer und geschichtstheoretischer Überlegungen zurück, die zur Analyse des Kultes angewendet werden. --- Franz Tóth, Dr. theol., Jahrgang 1972, ist Pastor in München. Sein Forschungsschwerpunkt ist die Johannesoffenbarung und das antike Judentum in der Zeit des zweiten Tempels.

    The article deals with the symbolic meaning of Jesus’ golden sash (Rev 1:13) in the inaugural vision of Revelation (1:12-20). The source of this chromatic symbolism is first found in The Old Testa­ment, in the light of which gold color points at Jesus as God, King, and High Priest. In the proposed reflection, the author looks for the possible source (of inspiration) in ancient Greek literature, especially in mythological depictions of divinities: Zeus, Poseidon, Artemis, Apollo, and Circe. The analysis of cho­sen fragments, cited from Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey and Challimachus’ Hymns, enable us to ascertain that gold is the dominant color and that many elements of garment, inventory, and equipment used by Greek divinities are made from this valuable material. It becomes clear that gold or gold ore is naturally associated with diety and is the “color of gods.” The author of Revelation could use images and moti­ves borrowed from Greek imagery and mythology, treating them as literary material which symbolically expresses the truth about Jesus’ transcendence. Artykuł podejmuje zagadnienie symbolicznego znaczenia złotego pasa Jezusa (Ap 1,13) w inauguracyjnej wizji Apokalipsy (1,12-20). Źródłem tego symbolizmu chromatycznego jest najpierw Stary Testament, w którego świetle złoty kolor wskazuje na Jezusa jako Boga, Króla i Arcykapłana. W zaproponowanej refleksji poszukuje się także możliwych źródeł (inspiracji) w antycznej literaturze greckiej, zwłaszcza w opisach bóstw mitologicznych: Zeusa, Posejdona, Artemidy, Apollona, Kirke. Analiza wybranych fragmentów, zaczerpniętych z Iliady i Odysei Homera oraz Hymnów Kallimacha, pozwala stwierdzić, że złoto jest ich dominującym kolorem, a wiele elementów stroju, ekwipunku i sprzętów, którymi posługują się greccy bogowie, zostało wykonanych z tego szlachetnego i cennego materiału. Można zatem powiedzieć, że barwa złota jest „kolorem bogów”, a sam kruszec kojarzy się w sposób naturalny w bóstwem. Autor Apokalipsy mógł zatem wykorzystać obrazy i motywy zapożyczone z mitologii i symboliki greckiej, traktując je jako materiał literacki, wyrażający symbolicznie prawdę o transcendencji Jezusa.

    Scholars disagree as to whether Yedaniah, the leader of the Judean community of Elephantine at the end of the fifth century BCE, was a priest or layperson. This article argues that the letter from the Judean garrison of Elephantine to Bagavahya (TAD A4.7, 8) is the key to answering this question. The first draft of the letter (A4.7) makes a distinction between Yedaniah and the priests, indicating that Yedaniah was a layperson. Nevertheless, the second draft explicitly identifies him as a priest according to the reconstruction of the first line (A4.8:1) by Bezalel Porten and Ada Yardeni. Although the fragmentary nature of the second draft poses problems, this reconstruction remains the most likely original reading. Yedaniah’s inclusion in the priesthood in the first line of the second draft parallels other instances in the second draft that erase the distinction between Yedaniah and the priesthood. In order to understand why Yedaniah portrays himself as a priest in the second draft even though he was in fact a layperson, one must attend to the rhetorical situation of the letter. The letter in both drafts contains sophisticated rhetorical techniques, with the second draft further enhancing the persuasive power. As part of the rhetorical strategy of the letter, both drafts implicitly draw parallels between the Elephantine Judean community and that of Jerusalem. Yedaniah’s identification as a priest in the second draft bolsters these comparisons by rhetorically presenting Yedaniah as the counterpart of Yehohanan, the high priest of Jerusalem.

    Philology seeks to reconstruct the meanings of words within their temporal and social contexts. As such, it relies on a historical-critical approach to texts. Just as historical reconstructions of social complexity benefit from gender studies, applying insights from gender criticism expands the conceptual horizon of philology. With a focus on the meanings of חל(ל) and קדשׁ, this paper applies a gender lens to philology in two ways. First, as gender criticism often challenges the imposition of binaries, the deconstruction of assumptions about sacred/profane and their assumed meanings allows us to perceive more nuance in the ancient concepts of חל(ל) and קדשׁ. By expanding our understanding of קדשׁ along lines suggested by Mary Douglas and others to encompass a conception of wholeness, חל(ל) can be understood as connoting a breach in wholeness that operates on a continuum relative to status and circumstance, rather than as a simple opposite of קדשׁ. Second, as gender studies have posited a correlation between maleness and wholeness, the connection between חל(ל) and femaleness can explain peculiarities both of the Israelite cult, and of certain cultural customs such as levirate marriage, political coup by sexual conquest, and the requirement to kill enemy women who are not virgins.

    Jacobus Eliza Johannes Capitein (1717-1747) was a man of many firsts—the first black student of theology at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands, the first black minister ordained in the Dutch Reformed Church in the Netherlands, the author of the first Fante/Mfantse-Dutch Grammar in Ghana as well as the first translator of the Ten Commandments, Twelve Articles of Faith and parts of the Catechism into Fante/Mfantse. However, he is also remembered as the first African to argue in writing that slavery was compatible with Christianity in the public lecture that he delivered at Leiden in 1742 on the topic, De Servitute Libertati Christianae Non Contraria. The Latin original was soon translated into Dutch and became so popular in the Netherlands that it was reprinted five times in the first year of publication. This contribution will pose the question: Was Capitein a sell-out who soothed the Dutch colonial conscience as he argued with scholarly vigour in his dissertation that the Bible did not prohibit slavery and that it was therefore permissible to continue with the practice in the eighteenth century; or was he resisting the system by means of mimicry due to his hybrid identity - as an African with a European education - who wanted to spread the Christian message and be an educator of his people? doi.org/10.17159/2312-3621/2020/v34n2a18

    Zunehmend rückt das Phänomen des geistlichen Missbrauchs in das öffentliche Bewusstsein der Kirche. Mit der Diskussion über Macht und Gewaltenteilung in der Kirche berührt auch der Synodale Weg dieses Problem. Wer aber geistlichen Missbrauch in der Kirche bekämpfen will, muss diesen allgemeinen Begriff so ausbuchstabieren, dass konkrete Tatbestände erkennbar werden. Dies ist sowohl für die Prävention als auch für die Sanktion von geistlichem Missbrauch eine unerlässliche Voraussetzung. The phenomenon of spiritual abuse is increasingly being brought into the official awareness of the Church. With the discussion of power and the division of power within the Church, the Synodal Way also touches on this problem. Yet those who want to combat spiritual abuse in the Church must spell out this general concept in such a way that certain facts become apparent. This is an essential condition for both the prevention and the punishment of spiritual abuse.
