In 2014, New York-based artist Lois Conner gifted one of pioneering Chinese artist Zhang Peili’s last paintings to The Australian National University’s newly opened Australian Centre on China in the World. Never exhibited and thought lost, the reemergence of Flying Machine (1994) prompts an exploration of the relation between painting and video in the oeuvre of Zhang Peili. Given Zhang’s significance as a leading conceptual painter in the 1980s, then as a media art pioneer and educator in the 1990s and 2000s, Zhang Peili: From Painting to Video is also a nuanced study of broader developments in Chinese contemporary art’s history. Featuring contributions by historian Geremie R. Barmé, photographer Lois Conner, art historians John Clark, Katie Grube, and Olivier Krischer, and curator Kim Machan, these essays together challenge the narrative of Zhang as ‘the father of Chinese video art’, highlighting instead the conceptual consistency, rigour, and formal experimentation in his work, which transcends a specific medium. By equal measure, the book embraces longstanding connections as integral to its meaning, connections between artists, curators and researchers, collaborators, colleagues and friends through China and Australia.

LexArt. Words for Painting is a dictionary of terms and concepts used by the painters and theorists to describe both practice and theory in France, Germany, England and the Netherlands in the 17th and 18th centuries. The purpose is to highlight the stakes of the usages of these words and concepts in different chronological and geographical contexts.

77 essays cover nearly 250 concepts. The entries, appearing in traditional alphabetical order, outline the boundaries of a new reading of the painting as seen through the eye of the painter as well as through the eye of the spectator. Indeed, the "speaking painting" not only invites the spectator into the painter's studio to show how the painting is done, but introduces him to the painting itself, indicating what to see and how to see.

In this book, Nadia Radwan explores a key moment of the development of modern Egyptian art, when the foundations of a new artistic practice are defined in the early 20th century. Based on field work and unexplored archival material, this work focuses on a generation of painters and sculptors commonly referred to as the pioneers (al-ruwwad). Trained in institutions, such as the School of Fine Arts in Cairo, their production is inscribed in a project of artistic renaissance and reflects multiple transcultural interactions between Egypt and Europe. This publication thus re-evaluates these artists that opened the path to Egyptian modernism and sheds light their yet understudied production. While art history is now approached in the perspective of circulations, exchange and networks, this book offers a background to a better comprehend the dynamics and stakes of contemporary art in the Middle East and intends to contribute to the cartographic constellation of a world art history.

LexArt. The words of painting is a dictionary of terms and concepts, which, from the artistic literature, in a synchronous approach of discourse and artistic practice, describe the painting as it is practiced in France, Germany, England and the Netherlands in the 17th and 18th centuries. These writings constitute the mental, intellectual and visual universe, which makes it possible to better apprehend the work of art, and shape the eye to better see. The purpose of this book is to highlight the stakes of uses resituated in different contexts in time and space, in a confrontation of ways of thinking, painting and watching. Seventy-seven essays address nearly two hundred and fifty notions. The articles respond to each other, and form an ensemble which, behind the alphabetical order of the dictionary, draws the contours of a new reading of the painting seen through the eye of the painter and the eye of the spectator. Indeed, the "speaking painting" does not only introduce the viewer into the painter's studio by showing him the "how to do", he introduces him into the painting itself, shows him what to see and how see. LexArt.

In crossed approaches, the themes developed in this book bring a new look at the forms, uses and stakes of artistic lexicography in modern times.

In a perspective of circulation of concepts and practices, and permeability of the artistic borders, the word proves to be a precious laboratory of the practice of the artistic practice and a field of exploration of the cultural networks that cross and make Europe .

Through the development of a language, books on art whose publications are growing in the north of the Alps from 1600, aim at the construction of a common knowledge for the use of painters and amateurs.

Their many translations, published since the modern era, also testify to their role of diffusion agent in constant adaptation to the readership to which they are addressed. Understanding strategies and processes of invention and transfer of specific terminology to aesthetic expression becomes an important issue. Words, indeed, are not interchangeable. By succeeding or overlapping, even if they are contradictory, the different senses give thickness and subtlety to the concept.

The journey of a notion into time and space also contributes to broadening our understanding of a cultural history between universality and identity within the artistic diversity that characterizes modern Europe.

"In 1911 Vasily Kandinsky published the first edition of ‘On the Spiritual in Art’, a landmark modernist treatise in which he sought to reframe the meaning of art and the true role of the artist. For many artists of late Imperial Russia – a culture deeply influenced by the regime’s adoption of Byzantine Orthodoxy centuries before – questions of religion and spirituality were of paramount importance. As artists and the wider art community experimented with new ideas and interpretations at the dawn of the twentieth century, their relationship with ‘the spiritual’ – broadly defined – was inextricably linked to their roles as pioneers of modernism. This diverse collection of essays introduces new and stimulating approaches to the ongoing debate as to how Russian artistic modernism engaged with questions of spirituality in the late nineteenth to mid-twentieth centuries. Ten chapters from emerging and established voices offer new perspectives on Kandinsky and other familiar names, such as Kazimir Malevich, Mikhail Larionov, and Natalia Goncharova, and introduce less well-known figures, such as the Georgian artists Ucha Japaridze and Lado Gudiashvili, and the craftswoman and art promoter Aleksandra Pogosskaia.

Prefaced by a lively and informative introduction by Louise Hardiman and Nicola Kozicharow that sets these perspectives in their historical and critical context, Modernism and the Spiritual in Russian Art: New Perspectives enriches our understanding of the modernist period and breaks new ground in its re-examination of the role of religion and spirituality in the visual arts in late Imperial Russia. Of interest to historians and enthusiasts of Russian art, culture, and religion, and those of international modernism and the avant-garde, it offers innovative readings of a history only partially explored, revealing uncharted corners and challenging long-held assumptions."

European visual culture changed so fundamentally in the 13th century that, in retrospect, we perceive an epochal boundary – the stylistic change from Romanesque to Gothic, the transition from the High to the Late Middle Ages. Some of the foundations for this were laid in the previous century. Thus the developments initiated in the masons' lodges of northern France in the middle of the 12th century not only led to the great architectural achievements of the 13th century, but also to common standards in the sculpture of Western, Central and partly Southern Europe. Another important impulse came with the conquest of Constantinople in 1204. The half-familiar, half-exotic visual media of Byzantine art were mainly received in Central Europe and Italy, leading to the development of specific art forms that were distinct from Western painting. These achievements were complemented by literary production, which took on an unprecedented scale. In addition to the almost boundless quantities of religious writings and specialist literature, mainly written in Latin, the tradition of extensive profane poetry in national languages, which began at the end of the 12th century, intensified. The latter is evidenced by a growing readership outside spiritual institutions and the manufacturing structures that were formed to meet the new demand. This was inevitably accompanied by innovations in book illumination and the creation of new secular picture cycles.

Which of the aforementioned dynamics were decisive in each individual case and whether there were other important factors that contributed to this development was the subject of an international conference that took place in 2017 at the Art History Institute of Vienna University under the title "Image- and Book-Culture in 13th-Century Europe", the results of which are presented in this volume. The contributions approach various aspects of the developments from different angles. They offer a range of current research, including approaches from the history of ideas and media research, as well as findings on recipients, networks, the transfer of objects and technical innovations based on detailed analyses. The starting point is formed by images - paintings and sculptures, stationary as well as mobile, publically accessible as well as private.

Positioning Chinese Painting in National Painting Monthly -- Canon and Place in the Paintings of He Tianjian -- In Search of the Southeast: Writing and Picturing Travel -- Painting from Nature and Transmedial Practice: Yu Jianhua's Travel Albums -- The Making of a Standard Mountain: Reshaping the Iconography of Mount Huang -- Travel and Cultural History in the Paintings of Huang Binhong -- Epilogue: Landscape Painting in Times of War. Transmedial Landscapes and Modern Chinese Painting shines a spotlight on the mid-1930s, a period of intense productivity in which Chinese artists created an enormous number of artworks and theoretical texts. The book focuses on the works of three seminal artists, Huang Binhong, He Tianjian, and Yu Jianhua, facilitating fresh insights into this formative stage of their careers and into their collaborations in artworks and publications. In a nuanced reading of paintings, photographs, and literary and theoretical texts, the author shows how artworks and discussions about the future of ink painting were intimately linked to the reshaping of the country through infrastructure development and tourism, thus leading to the creation of a uniquely modern Chinese landscape imagery"-- Juliane Noth shows how art and discussions about the future of ink painting were linked to the reshaping of the country, leading to the creation of a uniquely modern Chinese landscape imagery. Noth offers a new understanding of these experiments by studying them as transmedial practice, at once shaped by and integral to the modern global art world

A curated collection of Enlightenment operas, paintings, and literary works that were all marked by the "Telemacomania" scandal, a furious cultural frenzy with dangerous political stakes.Imaginatively structured as a guided tour, Opera and the Politics of Tragedy captures the tumultuous impact of the so-called Telemacomania crisis through its key artifacts: literary pamphlets, spoken dramas, paintings, engravings, and opera librettos (drammi per musica). Prominently featured in the gallery are two operas with direct ties to this aesthetic and political war: Mozart and Cigna-Santi's Mitridate (1770) and Mozart and Varesco's Idomeneo (1781). Reading and listening across the Enlightenment's cultural spaces (its new public museums, its first encyclopedias, and its ever-controversial operatic theater), this book showcases the Enlightenment's disorderly historical revisionism alongside its progressive politics to expose the fertile creativity that can emerge out of the ambiguous space between what is "ancient" and what is "modern."

Between 1966 and 1976, American artist Nancy Spero completed some of her most aggressively political work. Made at a time when Spero was a key member of the anti-war and feminist arts-activism that burgeoned in the New York art world during the period, her works demonstrate a violent and bodily rejection of injustice. Considering the ways in which anti-war and feminist art used emotion as a means to persuade and protest, Pain and Politics in Postwar Feminist Art examines the history of this crucial decade in American art politics through close attention to Spero's practice. Situating her work amongst the activism that defined the era, this book examines the ways in which sensation and emotion became political weapons for a generation of artists seeking to oppose patriarchy and war. Exemplary of the way in which artists were using metaphors of sensation and emotion in their work as part of the anti-Vietnam war and feminist art movements in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Spero's practice acts as a model for representing how politics feels. By exploring Spero's political engagement anew, this book offer a profound recontextualization of the important contribution that Spero made to Feminist thought, politics and art in the US

This study contributes to ongoing discussions on the connections between the environmental imaginary and issues of identity, place and nation. Utilizing a delimited ecocritical approach, McNee puts Brazilian culture, through the work of contemporary poets and visual artists, into a broader, transnational dialogue. "In this smart interdisciplinary treatment of ecopoetics, Malcolm McNee's The Environmental Imaginary in Brazilian Poetry and Art uses ecocritical theory to build bridges between the most recent developments in Environmental Humanities and the cultural and bioregional contexts of Brazil as well as between the literary and visual arts. Unlike the many primarily political treatments of the theme of nature in Latin American literature, McNee allows contemporary understandings of ecology to inspire a rethinking of older postcolonial paradigms. It will be of great value to ecocritics and, no doubt, to the budding conversation in Brazil about literature and the environment." - George Handley, Professor of Humanities, Classics, and Comparative Literature, Brigham Young University, USA "Just as Brazil is one of the most prominent green sites on the planet, Malcolm K. McNee, with his unique study, is poised to be an authoritative voice in ecocriticism of contemporary Brazilian poetry and visual arts. What he sees and hears reverberates throughout the hemisphere and around the world." - Charles A. Perrone, Professor of Spanish & Portuguese Studies, University of Florida, USA, and author of Seven Faces, Brazilian Poetry since Modernism and Brazil, Lyric, and the Americas "In this seminal and sensitive study of contemporary poetry and visual arts from Brazil, Malcolm McNee expands our understanding not only of the Environmental Imaginary, but also of the aesthetical, historical, and philosophical challenges of our time. Through a careful and delicate analysis of the work of four poets, Manoel de Barros, Astrid Cabral, Sergio Medeiros and Josely Vianna Baptista, and four artists, Frans Krajcberg, Bene Fonteles, Lia do Rio, and Nuno Ramos, McNee's book brings a fresh air and a renewed approach to literary studies, attuned with the most contemporary reflections on ethno-anthropology, and ecocriticsm." - Marilia Librandi-Rocha, Assistant Professor of Brazilian Literature and Culture, Stanford University, USA.

Leon Keer is the master of optical illusion. The 'Dutch JR' plays with perspectives and creates a whole new world. One in which Snow White is stuck under a door. Or a world in which you unexpectedly enter a seventies living room. This is his first monograph. He allows the reader an exclusive look into his world and imagination. How does he work? And how does a wild idea develop into a gigantic 3D artwork?

Transforming Saints explores the transformation and function of the images of holy females within wider religious, social, and political contexts of Old Spain and New Spain from the Spanish conquest to Mexican independence. The chapters here examine the rise of the cults of the lactating Madonna, St. Anne, St. Librada, St. Mary Magdalene, and the Suffering Virgin. Concerned with holy figures presented as feminine archetypes, images that came under Inquisition scrutiny, as well as cults suspected of concealing indigenous influences, Charlene VillaseÑor Black argues that these images would come to reflect the empowerment and agency of women in viceregal Mexico. Her close analysis of the imagery additionally demonstrates artists' innovative responses to Inquisition censorship and the new artistic demands occasioned by conversion. The concerns that motivated the twenty-first century protests against Chicana artists Yolanda LÓpez in 2001 and Alma LÓpez in 2003 have a long history in the Hispanic world—anxieties about the humanization of sacred female bodies and fears of indigenous influences infiltrating Catholicism. In this context Black also examines a number of important artists in depth, including El Greco, Murillo, Jusepe de Ribera, and Pedro de Mena in Spain and Naples and Baltasar de Echave IbÍa, Juan Correa, CristÓbal de Villalpando, and Miguel Cabrera

In his short life, William Morris (1834-96) combined the roles of poet, author, painter, designer, translator, lecturer, political activist, journalist, weaver, bookmaker, and businessman. This volume draws together influential voices from different disciplines who have participated in the recent critical, political, and curatorial revival of his work, with essays exploring the contemporary resonance of his exceptional legacy. As a critic of capitalism, his thinking has thrived in these years of financial crisis; as a theorist of work and craftsmanship, his legacy interacts with a more recent ethics of making that questions the values of 'off-shored' production; and as a protector of landscape and buildings Morris's concern with what is precious strikes a chord in our age of environmental crisis. At the same time, a careful and scholarly approach observes the particularity of Morris's context, in a way that confounds the 'false friends' of hasty historical reception and reveals unexpected connections
