Patrick McCabe s'inscrit dans la veine d'écrivains irlandais comme Roddy Doyle, Dermot Bolger et Colm Toibin, qui témoignent de la transition d'une Irlande conservatrice à un véritable modèle de mondialisation. Dans ses romans, McCabe présente des personnages fous en marge de la société, et il rompt avec les canons traditionnels pour faire entendre leurs voix. L'objectif de ce travail est d'analyser les écritures de la folie que l'auteur propose dans ses romans, et de mettre en évidence les méthodes employées pour accompagner le lecteur dans les méandres de la folie. La première partie de l'étude aborde les questions que la folie pose à l'esthétique romanesque et aux problèmes que soulève l'intégration de cette thématique dans le roman. Il s'agit de retrouver le fragile équilibre que McCabe maintient entre la déconstruction liée à la thématique de la folie et la structure minimale indispensable à l'œuvre littéraire et à la lecture. La folie sera ensuite envisagée sous l'angle du sens. Comment les délires sont-ils représentés? Comment est-il possible de les comprendre? En quoi sont-ils significatifs pour la lecture? Dans les romans étudiés, la folie n'est pas l'antinomie du sens, elle est au contraire profondément ancrée dans le sens et conditionnée et engendrée par ce dernier. Enfin, la répétition évidente de principes fondamentaux mènera l'analyse vers les multiples réécritures au cœur de la représentation de la folie chez McCabe. In his novels, McCabe depicts various mad characters on the margins of society, and breaking with convention, he urges us to hear them speak. The purpose of this work is to analyse the writing of madness in McCabe's novels, and to highlight the methods that he uses to guide the reader through the twists and turns of the mad psyche. The first part of this study will bring to the fore the various ways in which McCabe's notion and representation of madness challenge the basic principles of the novel genre and its internal architecture. How does the organization of McCabe's works illustrate madness and chaos? The answer lies in defining the fragile equilibrium that he maintains between the deconstruction naturally associated with madness and the minimal structure essential to the reading of a literary work. The second part will show the importance of meaning in the representation of madness. How are deliriums represented? How is it possible to understand them and why are they significant? In the novels under study, madness is not antinomical to sense; on the contrary, it is deeply rooted into, conditioned and caused by sense. Finally, the obvious repetitions of fundamental principles will lead to the examination of the numerous rewritings that are at the core of McCabe's representation of madness. This new perspective will help us to better understand the various sources that have influenced McCabe's works, should they be literary, musical, or cinematic
