In addition, their narration has to be structured in an orderly way, so the concept of "order" can be applied to literary texts in two ways: as the order(s) of narration and as narrated order(s) Indem narrative Texte Welten entfalten, entwerfen sie auch Ordnungen. Darüber hinaus müssen sie im Erzählen ordnungshaft gestaltet sein, so dass der Begriff der 'Ordnung' in Anwendung auf Erzähltexte in doppelter Hinsicht relevant ist: als Ordnung(en) des Erzählens wie auch als erzählte Ordnung(en). 'Ordnung' wird dabei als dynamisches Konzept verstanden, das nur in seiner Pluralität zu fassen sowie stark an die gesellschaftlichen Aktionsräume seiner Aushandlung rückgebunden ist. Denn Ordnungen zielen u. a. darauf, Gemeinschaft zu stiften und zu organisieren, Wahrnehmung zu formen, Bedeutung zu generieren, Sinnangebote zu machen sowie Wissen zu ermöglichen. Demnach lassen sich die in erzählten Welten entworfenen Ordnungsvorstellungen als spezifischer Ausdruck kulturellen Wissens lesen. Primäres Interesse des Bandes ist es, 'Ordnung' als Kategorie narratologischer Analyse zu erproben und über die im Titel benannte Doppelformel zu erfragen, inwiefern über ordnungshaftes Erzählen in Texten des Mittelalters und der Frühen Neuzeit Ordnungsvorstellungen von Gesellschaften produktiv verhandelt werden und in welcher Form Erzählliteratur somit beanspruchen kann, an der Bildung soziokultureller Welt Teil zu haben

    "Reading crusader fiction against the backdrop of Mediterranean history, this book explains how Iberian authors reimagined the idea of Crusade through the lens of Iberian geopolitics and social history. The Crusades transformed Mediterranean history and inaugurated complex engagements between Western Europe, the Balkans, North Africa, and the Middle East in ways that endure to this day. Narratives of Crusades powerfully shaped European thinking about the East and continue to influence the representation of interaction between Christian and Muslim states in the region. The Crusade, a French idea that gave rise to Iberian, North African, and Levantine campaigns, was very much a Mediterranean phenomenon. French and English authors wrote itineraries in the Holy Land, chronicles of the Crusades, and fanciful accounts of Christian knights who championed the Latin Church in the East.     Cynthia J. Brown explains why the advent of print in the late medieval period brought about changes in relationships among poets, patrons, and printers which led to a new conception of authorship.Examining such paratextual elements of manuscripts as title pages, colophons, and illustrations as well as such literary strategies as experimentation with narrative voice, Brown traces authors' attempts to underscore their narrative presence in their works and to displace patrons from their role as sponsors and protectors of the book. Her accounts of the struggles of poets, including Jean Lemaire, Jean Bouchet, Jean Molinet, and Pierre Gringore, over the design, printing, and sale of their books demonstrate how authors secured the status of literary proprietor during the transition from the culture of script and courtly patronage to that of print capitalism.

    As the visual representation of an essentially oral text, Sylvia Huot points out, the medieval illuminated manuscript has a theatrical, performative quality. She perceives the tension between implied oral performance and real visual artifact as a fundamental aspect of thirteenth- and fourteenth-century poetics. In this generously illustrated volume, Huot examines manuscript texts both from the performance-oriented lyric tradition of chanson courtoise, or courtly love lyric, and from the self-consciously literary tradition of Old French narrative poetry. She demonstrates that the evolution of the lyrical romance and dit, narrative poems which incorporate thematic and rhetorical elements of the lyric, was responsible for a progressive redefinition of lyric poetry as a written medium and the emergence of an explicitly written literary tradition uniting lyric and narrative poetics. Huot first investigates the nature of the vernacular book in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, analyzing organization, page layout, rubrication, and illumination in a series of manuscripts. She then describes the relationship between poetics and manuscript format in specific texts, including works by widely read medieval authors such as Guillaume de Lorris, Jean de Meun, and Guillaume de Machaut, as well as by lesser-known writers including Nicole de Margival and Watriquet de Couvin. Huot focuses on the writers' characteristic modifications of lyric poetics; their use of writing and performance as theme; their treatment of the poet as singer or writer; and of the lady as implied reader or listener; and the ways in which these features of the text were elaborated by scribes and illuminators. Her readings reveal how medieval poets and book-makers conceived their common project, and how they distinguished their respective roles.

    Written in the thirteenth century, the Icelandic prose sagas, chronicling the lives of kings and commoners, give a dramatic account of the first century after the settlement of Iceland--the period from about 930 to 1050. To some extent these elaborate tales are written versions of traditional sagas passed down by word of mouth. How did they become the long and polished literary works that are still read today?The evolution of the written sagas is commonly regarded as an anomalous phenomenon, distinct from contemporary developments in European literature. In this groundbreaking study, Carol J. Clover challenges this view and relates the rise of imaginative prose in Iceland directly to the rise of imaginative prose on the Continent. Analyzing the narrative structure and composition of the sagas and comparing them with other medieval works, Clover shows that the Icelandic authors, using Continental models, owe the prose form of their writings, as well as some basic narrative strategies, to Latin historiography and to French romance.

    This book studies attitudes toward secular literature during the later Middle Ages. Exploring two related medieval justifications of literary pleasure-one finding hygienic or therapeutic value in entertainment, and another stressing the psychological and ethical rewards of taking time out from work in order to refresh oneself-Glending Olson reveals that, contrary to much recent opinion, many medieval writers and thinkers accepted delight and enjoyment as valid goals of literature without always demanding moral profit as well. Drawing on a vast amount of primary material, including contemporary medical manuscripts and printed texts, Olson discusses theatrics, humanist literary criticism, prologues to romances and fabliaux, and Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. He offers an extended examination of the framing story of Boccaccio's Decameron. Although intended principally as a contribution to the history of medieval literary theory and criticism, Literature as Recreation in the Later Middle Ages makes use of medical, psychological, and sociological insights that lead to a fuller understanding of late medieval secular culture.

Bisherige Minnereden-Anthologien beschränken sich auf die unkommentierte Wiedergabe historischer Sammlungskontexte. Erstmals steht mit der vorliegenden Edition nun ein repräsentatives Bild des Gattungszusammenhangs zur Verfügung. Die Auswahl der 57 Texte - zusammen ca. 10.600 Verse - orientiert sich am Gesamtcorpus der Minneredenüberlieferung und ist gattungstypologisch gegliedert (Preis und Liebesbekenntnis; Liebesbrief und Liebesgruß; Liebes- und Trennungsklage; Tugendlehre und Lasterschelte; Minnesprüche; Rat und Unterweisung durch Lehrinstanzen; Farb- und Blumenallegorese; Dialog und Streitgespräch; Werbungsgespräch; Träume; Minne und Jagd; Minnegericht; Geistliche Ordnung und ihre Verkehrung; Körperliche und käufliche Liebe). Ediert werden die Minnereden jeweils nach einer Leithandschrift, ein Variantenapparat dokumentiert die Parallelüberlieferung, ein Stellenkommentar gibt Übersetzungshilfen. Gemeinsam mit dem 2013 erschienenen Handbuch Minnereden ist damit ein völlig neuer Zugang zur Gattung möglich. Von der Verfügbarkeit im "Open Access" profitieren sowohl die interdisziplinäre Erforschung des Spätmittelalters als auch der akademische Unterricht

It thus casts new light on the literary practices of a period pre- and post-print to demonstrate how participatory reading vitally contributed to and shaped these negotiations of fragile authority

    "Guido Cavalcanti (d. 1300) is one of the greatest Italian poets of all time. His legacy consists of some fifty poems, of which his canzone on the nature of love, Donna me Prega, is the most famously difficult and complex. The poem is important not only because it sheds light on fundamental intellectual debates during the time of Dante, but also because of its influence on generations of poets and intellectuals. In this study, Maria Luisa Ardizzone sets Donna me Prega in an entirely new light - first, by examining its role in Cavalcanti's poetic practice, and second, by placing it in the context of ancient and medieval science and philosophy. The book deals with issues that are part of the intellectual history of Europe in the thirteenth century. Cavalcanti's work is interpreted by reconstructing the debate of ideas in which it participates, and the new model of poetry devised by Cavalcanti is one of the subjects of this book."--BOOK JACKET

The aim of Gold-Hall and Earth -Dragon is to re-create as fully as possible for modern readers the original force of the poetic language of Beowulf. Lee makes use of a wide, archetypal literary context for Beowulf to provide illuminating parallels and contrasts with poems and fictions from other times and places. He demonstrates how the poem's symbolic system reveals itself through the metaphorical workings of the Old English words, patterns of imagery, and more general narrative structures, and how the poem might have been experienced and interpreted by the Anglo-Saxons in the light of other Old English poems. The critical tools that Lee uses - combining certain techniques of New Criticism and close reading with postmodern theories of the self-referentiality of language and with Northrop Frye's conceptions of structure and polysemy in literature - make possible a fresh new account of Beowulf as a work that is very much alive in its poetic language, a finely wrought symbolic work of imagining, still resonant with meanings old and new

    A resolution to the vexed problem whether a troubadour's love is erotic or spiritual is offered by Paolo Cherchi through a new reading of Andreas Capellanus' De Amore (written around 1186-1196). He suggests that Andreas, using a rhetorical strategy that creates ambiguity, condemns courtly love because its claim that passion generates virtue is untenable and deceitful. Although Andreas grasped the core of the courtly love 'system, ' namely, the relation between passion and ethics, he failed to consider the notion of mezura, that courtly virtue through which troubadours transformed nature into culture, and erotic passion into social discourse. Cherchi offers an innovative interpretation and a close reading of selected poems.
