    Qualities of the written sign impact the process of parsing a text, of making it accessible for vision, contemplation, recitation, and memory. In this article, I approach the manuscript as a visual field ordered by the configuration, combination, and differentiation of marks. This approach considers the particular challenges and potentialities that the space of the manuscript presents to a scribe as well as to a reader and how this blurs the boundaries between text and image. Through a case study of a Tibetan ritual manual, I illuminate the act of inscription as a technology with material, ritual, mnemonic, and pedagogical applications.

    [Dt.:] Auf den Webseiten des International Dunhuang Project (IDP) wird Zugriff auf die sich im Aufbau befindliche Datenbank des Projekts gewährt. Das internationale Projekt mit Sitz an der British Library zielt auf die Erforschung der über 100.000 Schriftrollen, Artefakte und Gemälde aus den Höhlentempeln von Dunhuang und anderer Fundstätten an der Seidenstraße, die sich in verschiedenen Sammlungen weltweit befinden. Die Datenbank zeigt Abbildungen der Stücke und gibt Information zu Provenienz, Geschichte, kulturellen Kontext sowie zu Bibliographie. Die Datenbank kann über einen Katalog-Browser nach unterschiedlichen Gesichtspunkten durchsucht werden, über denselben Browser kann auch nach Bibliographie gesucht werden. Die Abbildungen der Fundstücke können vergrößert und gedreht werden. Des weiteren gibt es eine Landkarten-Sektion und eine Suchmaske für Schriftrollen für die Expertensuche. Unter ´My Space` kann der Nutzer einen Account eingerichten, in dem seine Suchergebnisse abgespeichert werden. Zudem gibt es Informationen zu den Publikationen des Projekts, einen Newsletter und Links zu themenverwandten Seiten. - [Engl.:] The International Dunhuang Project (IDP), based at the British Library, is a significant international collaboration which is carrying out research on over 100,000 manuscripts, artefacts, and paintings from Dunhuang and other Silk Road sites. The project is placing these textual and image resources on the Internet, together with information on their provenance, history, and cultural context. The IDP bibliography consists of around 10,000 items. There is also a list of the project's own publications, and an IDP Newsletter. There is a map section and a manuscript search facility which enables quite sophisticated subject searches. Images of the search results are displayed along with metadata about the objects. "My Space" is a feature enabling a record to be kept of the users's personal searches and information. There are also links to special topics such as: Chinese bookbinding.

    This article investigates the Zhengming jing 證明經 (T. no. 2879) and its diverse functions, using the text as a case study for placing apocryphal scriptures in their social and political contexts. Examining the material properties of the manuscripts, as well as the various interests that the text served, the article argues that at least some practitioners understood the Zhengming jing as a typical Buddhist scripture. Moreover, comparison of the text with the canonical Maitreya scriptures shows that the author(s) of the Zhengming jing consciously blurred the lines between kingship and Buddhahood. This modification was particularly significant because it provided the basis for an apocryphal interpolation that helped validate the reign of Emperor Wu Zetian 武則天. By placing the Zhengming jing in these various contexts, the article demonstrates that apocryphal texts could serve as important sources of social and political authority in medieval Chinese Buddhism.

    [Dt.:] Auf den Webseiten des International Dunhuang Project (IDP) wird Zugriff auf die sich im Aufbau befindliche Datenbank des Projekts gewährt. Das internationale Projekt mit Sitz an der British Library zielt auf die Erforschung der über 100.000 Schriftrollen, Artefakte und Gemälde aus den Höhlentempeln von Dunhuang und anderer Fundstätten an der Seidenstraße, die sich in verschiedenen Sammlungen weltweit befinden. Die Datenbank zeigt Abbildungen der Stücke und gibt Information zu Provenienz, Geschichte, kulturellen Kontext sowie zu Bibliographie. Die Datenbank kann über einen Katalog-Browser nach unterschiedlichen Gesichtspunkten durchsucht werden, über denselben Browser kann auch nach Bibliographie gesucht werden. Die Abbildungen der Fundstücke können vergrößert und gedreht werden. Des weiteren gibt es eine Landkarten-Sektion und eine Suchmaske für Schriftrollen für die Expertensuche. Unter ´My Space` kann der Nutzer einen Account eingerichten, in dem seine Suchergebnisse abgespeichert werden. Zudem gibt es Informationen zu den Publikationen des Projekts, einen Newsletter und Links zu themenverwandten Seiten. - [Engl.:] The International Dunhuang Project (IDP), based at the British Library, is a significant international collaboration which is carrying out research on over 100,000 manuscripts, artefacts, and paintings from Dunhuang and other Silk Road sites. The project is placing these textual and image resources on the Internet, together with information on their provenance, history, and cultural context. The IDP bibliography consists of around 10,000 items. There is also a list of the project's own publications, and an IDP Newsletter. There is a map section and a manuscript search facility which enables quite sophisticated subject searches. Images of the search results are displayed along with metadata about the objects. "My Space" is a feature enabling a record to be kept of the users's personal searches and information. There are also links to special topics such as: Chinese bookbinding.
