    The barbarian is a construct of the Other which can be distinguished from the "savage" through a certain degree of social organization and from the monstrous through its more realistic-historic outlook. Still, these categories are fuzzy and fantastic fiction – understood in a broad sense – makes new use of the barbarian people motif in a manner which makes the ideological undertones more visible despite an increased freedom from historical references. The " mob" (das Gesindel) getting out of the forests to devastate the civilized order, in 'Auf den Marmorklippen', embodies abjection in its clearest form, a violent return of the dark violent repressed. On the contrary, in the cycle of 'Dune, the Fremens' are 'barbarian' only in the eyes of the corrupt totalitarian elite of the Imperium. Despite their rough way of life, they represent a cultural order much closer to ecological harmony, which constitutes a major theme in Frank Herbert's saga. Borges' perspective, in 'The Story of the Warrior and the Female Prisoner', is not so much ethical/political as it is philosophical : the mutual fascination between the 'civilized' and the 'barbarians' is tantamount to magnetic opposites, border-crossing and meaningful otherness. These three visions of the 'barbarian' can be distinguished not only through their ideological underpinnings, but also through their narrative techniques.

    Frank Herbert's "Dune" (1965) is considered to be one of the most successful Science Fiction novels of the 20th century. It introduces its readers to a future universe, in which the production of the most valuable resource of the universe - 'spice' - is only possible on one vast desert planet called Arrakis. "Dune" offers many different motifs, including a hero that eventually turns into a superhuman being. However, the novel is also rich of orientalist semiotics and relates to a sign system existent when Herbert wrote his book. Frank Jacob discusses these semiotics in detail and shows how much of "Lawrence of Arabia" is present in the story's plot.

    Im Nachwort von "Dune" schreibt Brian Herbert, der Sohn von Frank Herbert, über den Krieg gegen die Maschinen im Dune-Universum. In diesem Krieg befreiten sich die Menschen von den intelligenten Maschinen und es wurde ein Gesetz zum Verbot der Herstellung der Maschinen aufgestellt: "Thou shall not make a machine in the likeness of a human mind". Aber, und das ist die Tragik dieses Ausgangspunktes, es entsteht im Gegensatz zum Kampf um die eigene Souveränität eine neue Beherrschung des Menschen. Diese Wende, welche die Künstliche Intelligenz aus der Welt verbannt hat, aber die Biopolitik mit anderen Techniken fortführt, soll im Folgenden anhand der Bereiche Religion, Politik und Psychologie herausgearbeitet werden. Denn indem in "Dune" die künstliche Intelligenz verbannt wird, treten Herrschafts- und Kontrolltechniken wieder in den Vordergrund, die in den aristokratisch-feudalen Gesellschaften eine bedeutende Rolle einnahmen.
