    Wer in der Moderne von Abenteuern erzählt, setzt sich dem Verdacht der Trivialität aus. Doch ein stillschweigender Verzicht aufs Abenteuer fällt auch kanonischen Autoren der Moderne schwer. Der Sammelband nimmt diese Beobachtung zum Anlass einer Spurensuche. Er geht dem Verbleib des Abenteuers in literarischen und theoretischen Texten der Moderne nach. Neben klassischen Abenteuerautoren, wie Karl May oder Rider Haggard, stehen Texte von Goethe, Virginia Woolf, Marcel Proust u.a. im Fokus, welche das Abenteuer in einem Spannungsfeld von Integration und Zurückweisung situieren. Darüber hinaus widmet sich der Band der Bedeutung des Abenteuers im kolonialen Diskurs, in der Psychoanalyse und im Russischen Formalismus.

    "Has Scotland suffered from colonial oppression by England for the last 300 years? While historiography may give an answer in the negative,

    this study reveals that the contemporary Scottish novel is

    haunted by strong feelings, marked by perceptions of abjection and

    inferiorisation in response to constructing the English as dominating.

    Drawing from an unprecedented corpus of contemporary Scottish

    novels, this study explores the postcolonial in Scottish fiction in

    order to investigate the underlying discursive power relations that

    shape the Scottish literary imagination. The study consequently

    demonstrates that the analysis of Scottish national identity profits

    from this new angle of interpretation of the Scottish novel as postcolonial.

    The analysis of discourses such as those of gender, class,

    space and place, and race reveals how the construction of the Scottish

    as marginalised permeates the width of the contemporary Scottish

    novel, by referring to diverse examples, such as James Kelman’s

    How late it was, how late or genre fiction such as Ian Rankin’s Set in

    Darkness. Thus, this study provides an insightful reading in the wake

    of current political developments such as the Scottish independence

    referendum."

    In Allegories of the Anthropocene Elizabeth M. DeLoughrey traces how indigenous and postcolonial peoples in the Caribbean and Pacific Islands grapple with the enormity of colonialism and anthropogenic climate change through art, poetry, and literature. In these works, authors and artists use allegory as a means to understand the multiscalar complexities of the Anthropocene and to critique the violence of capitalism, militarism, and the postcolonial state. DeLoughrey examines the work of a wide range of artists and writers—including poets Kamau Brathwaite and Kathy Jetñil-Kijiner, Dominican installation artist Tony Capellán, and authors Keri Hulme and Erna Brodber—whose work addresses Caribbean plantations, irradiated Pacific atolls, global flows of waste, and allegorical representations of the ocean and the island. In examining how island writers and artists address the experience of finding themselves at the forefront of the existential threat posed by climate change, DeLoughrey demonstrates how the Anthropocene and empire are mutually constitutive and establishes the vital importance of  allegorical art and literature in understanding our global environmental crisis.

    This study offers a literary history of the war novel in Africa. Coundouriotis argues that this genre, aimed more specifically at African readers than the continent’s better-known bildungsroman tradition, nevertheless makes an important intervention in global understandings of human rights.The African war novel lies at the convergence of two sensibilities it encounters in European traditions: the naturalist aesthetic and the discourse of humanitarianism, whether in the form of sentimentalism or of human rights law. Both these sensibilities are present in culturally hybrid forms in the African war novel, reflecting its syncretism as a narrative practice engaged with the colonial and postcolonial history of the continent.The war novel, Coundouriotis argues, stakes claims to collective rights that contrast with the individualism of the bildungsroman tradition. The genre is a form of people’s history that participates in a political struggle for the rights of the dispossessed

    In Flesh and Fish Blood Subramanian Shankar breaks new ground in postcolonial studies by exploring the rich potential of vernacular literary expressions. Shankar pushes beyond the postcolonial Anglophone canon and works with Indian literature and film in English, Tamil, and Hindi to present one of the first extended explorations of representations of caste, including a critical consideration of Tamil Dalit (so-called untouchable) literature. Shankar shows how these vernacular materials are often unexpectedly politically progressive and feminist, and provides insight on these oft-overlooked—but nonetheless sophisticated—South Asian cultural spaces. With its calls for renewed attention to translation issues and comparative methods in uncovering disregarded aspects of postcolonial societies, and provocative remarks on humanism and cosmopolitanism, Flesh and Fish Blood opens up new horizons of theoretical possibility for postcolonial studies and cultural analysis

    This article presents a postcolonial-ecocritical reading of the Icelandic novel Lifandilífslækur (2018) by Bergsveinn Birgisson, arguing that this work can be interpreted as a call for a revision of Iceland’s position and role in the colonial system and its legacy which we are still grappling with, especially in terms of climate change and other ecological crises. The novel places an emphasis on the effects of colonialism for Icelanders, and Iceland being a part of a power system based on the notion of man’s dominance over nature. Focusing on the role of ghosts in the novel—figures that have obvious roots in Icelandic folklore — a change in focus is noted. Ghosts that once were depicted as relics of a heathen past coexisting with medieval Christianity, and later assigned a nationalist-romantic value, are today considered as potentially important in contemporary environmental debate with its focus on social power structures and toxic hierarchies.

    Achille Mbembe is one of the most brilliant theorists of postcolonial studies writing today. In On the Postcolony he profoundly renews our understanding of power and subjectivity in Africa. In a series of provocative essays, Mbembe contests diehard Africanist and nativist perspectives as well as some of the key assumptions of postcolonial theory. This thought-provoking and groundbreaking collection of essays—his first book to be published in English—develops and extends debates first ignited by his well-known 1992 article "Provisional Notes on the Postcolony," in which he developed his notion of the "banality of power" in contemporary Africa.     In den letzten zehn Jahren taucht in den Kultur- und Sozialwissenschaften zunehmend der Terminus Postkolonialität auf. Das Präfix “Post” verweist auf die gesellschaftliche Entwicklung nach der Kolonisierung hin, betont aber zugleich eine subtile Fortsetzung des kolonialen Erbes. Denn der Abzug zum Beispiel der britischen Kolonisatoren von Indien, so Despehs Chakrabarty, hätte keine institutionellen Veränderungen mit sich geführt. Politische Institutionen und das Bildungssystem hätten weiterhin nach dem Prinzip der Kolonialisierung gearbeitet. Für die Intellektuellen Indiens hätte dies bedeutet, eine Ausbildung genossen zu haben, die sprachlich und inhaltlich auf das Wissen der Kolonisatoren hin ausgerichtet gewesen sei. “Post”-Kolonialität umschreibt demnach, wie Edward Said betont, die Setzung von zwei scheinbar unsichtbaren imperialen Autoritäten, der des Wissens und der Macht. Für Ruth Frankenberg und Lata Mani beschreibt der Begriff der “Postkolonialität” eine Standortbestimmung. “Postkolonialität” bezeichnet für sie in Anlehnung an Antonio Gramsci und Louis Althusser, eine “conjuncture”, einen Kreuzungspunkt, an dem sich heterogene soziale Ungleichheitslagen auf der Folie postkolonialer Verhältnisse, überlagern (Frankenberg/Mani 1995, S. 292) Die Debatten um die Spuren des Kolonialismus im Werden und Machen von Welt und der Ausformung des heutigen Rassismus im Norden scheinen sich im deutschsprachigen Kontext an zwei verschiedenen Orten zu ereignen. Während die akademische und kritisch-künstlerische, politische Öffentlichkeit “Postkolonialität” als britischen oder US-amerikanischen Import rezipiert, kommt es bei feministischen Theoretikerinnen mit Diaspora-, Exil- und Migrationshintergrund zu einer eigenen Verarbeitung und Weiterentwicklung postkolonialer Kritik und kultureller Produktionen (Hügel 1993, Steyerl, Gelbin/Konuk/Piesche 1999). Insbesondere Schwarze deutsche Feministinnen haben bereits Mitte der 80er Jahre auf die koloniale Beschaffenheit der Bundesrepublik hingewiesen (vgl. Oguntoye u.a. 1986). In diesem Kontext bewegen sich auch die hier gesammelten Beiträge zu Gesellschaftstheorie und postkolonialer Kritik. Wir möchten mit diesem Sammelband zeitgenössiche Diagnosen und Kritiken vorstellen, die die Verhältnisse auf dem Hintergrund der kolonialen Geschichte Europas und der aktuellen Migratrionsregimen diskutieren. Hierfür wurden Beiträge zu den Themenfeldern Migration, soziale Ungleichheit, Bildungspolitik, Gouvernementalität, Queer Theorie und Repräsentationspolitiken gesammelt. Absicht ist es, eine kritische Perspektive auf Entwicklungen und Folgen einer neoliberaler Politiken im Zeichen von Ethnizität, Geschlecht, Sexualität und “Race” zu werfen.     Since Willi Marxsen’s break with the consensus view that the Gospel of Mark was most probably written in Rome, the question of provenance has played a crucial role in discussions of Mark’s purpose. While several researchers (most notably Dwight Peterson) have pointed out how using provenance as the hermeneutical key to Mark may involve a risk of circular reasoning, recent contributions have tied discussions of Mark’s purpose ever more tightly to the question of where the gospel was written. After outlining these recent research developments, this article argues for an alternative way of handling the question of Mark’s provenance, one that emphasizes how the major themes of Mark’s gospel touch upon longstanding issues within Second Temple Judaism, which means that a particular provenance is not needed as a hermeneutical crutch for establishing Mark’s purpose.

    In Allegories of the Anthropocene Elizabeth M. DeLoughrey traces how indigenous and postcolonial peoples in the Caribbean and Pacific Islands grapple with the enormity of colonialism and anthropogenic climate change through art, poetry, and literature. In these works, authors and artists use allegory as a means to understand the multiscalar complexities of the Anthropocene and to critique the violence of capitalism, militarism, and the postcolonial state. DeLoughrey examines the work of a wide range of artists and writers—including poets Kamau Brathwaite and Kathy Jetñil-Kijiner, Dominican installation artist Tony Capellán, and authors Keri Hulme and Erna Brodber—whose work addresses Caribbean plantations, irradiated Pacific atolls, global flows of waste, and allegorical representations of the ocean and the island. In examining how island writers and artists address the experience of finding themselves at the forefront of the existential threat posed by climate change, DeLoughrey demonstrates how the Anthropocene and empire are mutually constitutive and establishes the vital importance of  allegorical art and literature in understanding our global environmental crisis.

Der Sammelband nimmt diese Beobachtung zum Anlass einer Spurensuche. Er geht dem Verbleib des Abenteuers in literarischen und theoretischen Texten der Moderne nach. Neben klassischen Abenteuerautoren, wie Karl May oder Rider Haggard, stehen Texte von Goethe, Virginia Woolf, Marcel Proust u.a. im Fokus, welche das Abenteuer in einem Spannungsfeld von Integration und Zurückweisung situieren. Darüber hinaus widmet sich der Band der Bedeutung des Abenteuers im kolonialen Diskurs, in der Psychoanalyse und im Russischen Formalismus.

Neben klassischen Abenteuerautoren, wie Karl May oder Rider Haggard, stehen Texte von Goethe, Virginia Woolf, Marcel Proust u.a. im Fokus, welche das Abenteuer in einem Spannungsfeld von Integration und Zurückweisung situieren. Darüber hinaus widmet sich der Band der Bedeutung des Abenteuers im kolonialen Diskurs, in der Psychoanalyse und im Russischen Formalismus
