    Bringing together an international team of historians, classicists, and scholars of religion, this volume provides the first comprehensive overview of the extant Greek and Latin letter collections of late antiquity (ca. 300–600 c.e.). Each chapter addresses a major collection of Greek or Latin literary letters, introducing the social and textual histories of each collection and examining its assembly, publication, and transmission. Contributions also reveal how collections operated as discrete literary genres, with their own conventions and self-presentational agendas. This book will fundamentally change how people both read these texts and use letters to reconstruct the social history of the fourth, fifth, and sixth centuries

    Ohne Polybios wäre keine Darstellung der Geschichte der Mittelmeerwelt im 3. und 2. Jh. v. Chr. auf diesem Niveau möglich. Nahezu die gesamte historiographische Überlieferung geht – soweit zuverlässig – irgendwie auf Polybios zurück. Man kommt an einer Beschäftigung mit diesem Autor, der mit den Lebensdaten 200–122 v. Chr. viele Ereignisse, über die er schreibt, miterlebt hat, nicht vorbei. Darüber hinaus gibt der Politiker und Historiker auch Einblick in seine „Werkstatt“, so dass eine differenzierte Beschäftigung mit seinen historiographischen Prinzipien möglich ist. Laufend problematisiert er den historischen Wert der Quellen. Unabhängige Dokumente bestätigen seinen Bericht. So nimmt es nicht wunder, dass Polybios' Werk eine große Nachwirkung hat. Bis heute darf es als Lehrbuch für politisch Handelnde und Interessierte gelten. Without Polybios, no account of the history of the Mediterranean world from the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC would be possible at this level. Almost the entire historiographical tradition – as far as it is reliable – somehow goes back to Polybios. It is impossible to avoid dealing with this author, who lived through many of the events he writes about between 200 and 122 BC. In addition, the politician and historian also provides an insight into his "workshop" allowing for a differentiated study of his historiographical principles. He constantly problematises the historical value of the sources. Independent documents confirm his account. Hence, it is not surprising that Polybios' work has a great impact. To this day, it can be considered a textbook for political actors and interested parties.
