In the last quarter of the XV. Century was printed in Würzburg the "Expositio Psalmorum", attributed to the Würzburg Bishop Bruno compilation of various commentaries on psalms, biblical odes and other texts ecclesiastical content. One of the first printed editions served as a template for the Russian-Slavonic translation "Tolkovaja Psaltir 'Brunona Gerbipolenskogo", which Dmitrij Gerasimov completed on behalf of the then Novgorod archbishop Makarij in 1535; thanks to the great spread of German prints in Novgorod and the surrounding area, an otherwise quite insignificant psalm commentary was also given special attention in the Eastern Slavs. The aim of this dissertation is to acquaint the "Tolkovaja Psaltir" with the Slavic professional audience, highlighting historical, linguistic and cultural peculiarities that emphasize the importance of this hitherto neglected work, both in terms of the translation problem and in terms of translation on the tradition of lore in the Slavic Orthodox world.

This is a comprehensive study of the archaeological archives and artefact collections of Glastonbury Abbey, together with a new geophysical survey of the site. It analyses thirty-six seasons of archaeological excavation directed by such iconic figures as Sir William St John Hope, Sir Charles Peers, Sir Alfred Clapham and Dr Courtenay Arthur Ralegh Radford, and reveals new insights into the abbey’s origins and historical development. Previous interpretations are challenged and new evidence is presented for the Saxon and later medieval phases of the abbey, including an important complex of early glass-working furnaces, dated c 700. The study reveals, for the first time, archaeological evidence for the Norman and later medieval monastic ranges and the luxurious abbot’s hall and court.

From its first complete Italian printing in 1872 up to the present day, Domenico Comparetti's Vergil in the Middle Ages has been acknowledged as a masterpiece, regarded by some critics as "a true and proper history of European consciousness from antiquity to Dante." Treating Vergil's poetry as a foundation of Latin European identity, Comparetti seeks to give a complete history of the medieval conception of the preeminent poet. Scholars of the time had transformed Vergil into a sage and a seer, a type of universal philosopher--even a Christian poet and a guide of a Christian poet. In the mid-twelfth century, there surfaced legends that converted Vergil into a magician, endowing him with supernatural powers. Comparetti explores the ongoing interest in Vergil's poetry as it appeared in popular folklore and legends as well as in medieval classical scholarship. This great synthesizing work, which has been unavailable for over twenty years, is now back in print, based on E.F.M. Benecke's 1895 translation of the Italian second edition. Comparetti begins with the period in which Vergil lived and goes on to evaluate how the later images, particularly the legends, of Vergil coincide with the more scholarly accounts of his life. The result is a grand sweep of literary history from the first century B.C.E. through the end of the Middle Ages, with implications for the nineteenth century and the rise of Italian nationalism.
