    The book offers an interdisciplinary but very grounded look at the question of memory politics in contemporary Poland. It describes the conflicting ways in which two groups of people – the former anti-communist activists and the former officers of the repressive regime – have actively engaged in representations and claims about the communist past in the contemporary reality of one Polish town. The material is based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted during the years 2006-2008. The author focuses on the processes of reconstruction of memories and subjectivities taking place at the intersection of individuals, civic society, state bureaucracy and politics. The book focuses on the beliefs, hopes and fears of people who became the subjects of historical policy during their lifetimes.

Die Beiträger*innen bündeln Erkenntnisse aus aktuellen Studien zu Erfahrungen junger queerer Menschen sowie Fachkräften im Übergangssystem der Jugendberufshilfe und in den angrenzenden Bereichen von Ausbildung und Jugendarbeit. Dies verbinden sie mit Einführungen in aktuelle geschlechter- und queertheoretische Zugänge.

    We compare the economic growth trajectories of Poland and Ukraine since 1990 to try to understand the extent to which the observed growth differentials can be traced to increased efficiency in the use of capital and other factors (intensive growth), rather than to simple accumulation of capital (extensive growth). We stress the role of qualitative factors such as education, governance and institutions. We ask whether the EU perspective and NATO membership played a role. We discuss the closely related histories of the two countries and note the stark differences between them, including their different approaches to the EU vs Russia, full vs incomplete transition to a market economy, and democracy vs anocracy, as well as different initial conditions. We compare key determinants of growth and growth trajectories, using economic as well as social indicators, and trying to disentangle efficiency and accumulation and combine path dependence and the role and scope of creative destruction. While Poland had the shortest and mildest transformation recession among CEE countries, Ukraine has been stagnant, or in decline, since 1990. The statistics we report and the stories we tell suggest that both countries have a complex relationship with democracy and that the nearly threefold difference in per capita GDP at PPP in 2021 in Poland's favour, with the ratio of investment to GDP similar in both countries, can most plausibly be traced to: (a) Poland's more extensive and diversified exports, and fewer restrictions on trade, in addition to more comprehensive and quicker restructuring of the national economy inspired by the EU perspective; (b) Poland's more extensive and better-quality education; (c) Poland's greater democracy and longer experience of democracy, lower levels of corruption, better governance, and freer press; (d) Poland's smaller agricultural sector and greater emphasis on manufacturing; and (e) Poland's lower inflation and higher level of financial development. Furthermore, Poland built market-friendly institutions to EU specifications and joined NATO. Against all this, Ukraine had more economic equality and lower unemployment as well as, from the early 1990s, a lower initial level of income per person, but was hampered by political divisions, path-dependent corruption and poor governance. During the global Covid-19 pandemic, Ukraine apparently suffered fewer deaths than Poland, despite fewer vaccinations.

    Over a quarter of the world's population lives in economies that have undertaken transitions from central planning to market economies. These transitions entail far-reaching and complex changes in social, economic and political institutions and have had widely divergent outcomes. Important strands of literature have emphasised the strategic complementarities that characterise the transition process in both the economic and political realms. Contrary to a widespread assumption, market-supporting institutions do not necessarily arise when assets are privatised in a highly unstable and uncertain environment; in fact, multiple equilibria emerge and expectations may play a key role in equilibrium selection. In this paper, we survey the vast empirical literature on transition economies in order to provide evidence on the correlation between expectations at the beginning of transition and success of the transition process. We provide the first comprehensive survey of the literature on agents' subjective perceptions of transitions' paths.

    This paper measures social mobility rates in Hungary 1949-2017, for upper class and underclass families, using surnames to measure social status. In these years there were two very different social regimes. The first was the Hungarian People's Republic, 1949-1989, a Communist regime with an avowed aim of favouring the working class. Then the modern liberal democracy, 1989-2020, a free-market economy. We find five surprising things. First, social mobility rates were low for both upper- and lower-class families 1949- 2017, with an underlying intergenerational status correlation of 0.6-0.8. Second, social mobility rates under communism were the same as in the subsequent capitalist regime. Third, the Romani minority throughout both periods showed even lower social mobility rates. Fourth, the descendants of the noble class in Hungary in the eighteenth century were still significantly privileged in 1949 and later. And fifth, while social mobility rates did not change measurably during the transition, the composition of the political elite changed fast and sharply.

    Das Ezechielbuch verarbeitet die Katastrophe des Babylonischen Exils auf einzigartige Weise: Es zieht Symbolik von Übergangsriten (rites de passage) heran, um das Exil als notwendige Phase eines Prozesses darzustellen, der Israel und die Lesenden verändert. Über das ganze Ezechielbuch hinweg werden Räume und Bewegungen beschrieben. Sie lassen sich analog zu Symbolen in Übergangsritualen verstehen, wie sie von A. van Gennep und V. W. Turner beschrieben wurden. Israel hatte sich von JHWH entfernt. Um wieder in einen Status als Gottesvolk geführt werden zu können, muss ein dreistufiger Prozess durchlaufen werden, der die räumliche Entfernung aus Jerusalem und die Rückkehr beinhaltet. Die mittlere, liminale Phase, in der allein Israel erneuert werden kann, entspricht dem Exil. Beim Lesen des Ezechielbuches kann der Prozess performativ mitvollzogen werden, so dass auch die Lesenden transformiert werden. Die Untersuchung verbindet alttestamentliche Wissenschaft mit Raum- und Ritualtheorien.

    Transitions to democracy are generally highly complex processes in terms of political engineering aimed at governance. Spain in 1976, Argentina in 1983 and Chile in 1988 undertook this process with different starting points. However, certain political phenomena are comparable if comparable conditions are established (Sartori, 1994), and despite having different origins, each of these transitions faced common challenges. In this sense, we proceed to explore, through the premises of comparative politics, the decisions taken in the processes and to understand the reasons for the different courses of action. To this end, the focus is on the reform of the constitutional order, the regeneration of party life, the management of transitional justice, and the coexistence between outgoing authoritarian actors and incoming democratic agents. In this way, it seeks to generate a contribution to the debate generated on the processes of democratic transition.

    Economic diversification has gained significant attention as a crucial factor for sustainable development worldwide. This paper addresses the risks associated with extreme specialisation and explores the potential benefits of economic diversification for Mongolia. By comparing Mongolia with its designated aspirational and structural peers, the paper aims to shed light on strategies that can foster economic and societal diversification in the country. Although Mongolia possesses favourable levels of human capital compared with its peers, its unusually high ratio of natural capital to human capital highlights the necessity of reducing reliance on natural resources and promoting human capital-intensive economic activities. The paper examines the implications of declining demand for Mongolia's key minerals, primarily coal, resulting from climate change concerns and evolving investor preferences towards sustainability, China's coal consumption reduction goals, and the enduring impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Through this analysis, the paper offers insights into pathways for Mongolia to diversify its economy and enhance the well-being of its people by striking a balance between natural resources and human and social capital.

    This paper measures social mobility rates in Hungary 1949-2017, for upper class and underclass families, using surnames to measure social status. In these years there were two very different social regimes. The first was the Hungarian People’s Republic, 1949-1989, a Communist regime with an avowed aim of favouring the working class. Then the modern liberal democracy, 1989-2020, a free-market economy. We find five surprising things. First, social mobility rates were low for both upper- and lower-class families 1949-2017, with an underlying intergenerational status correlation of 0.6-0.8. Second, social mobility rates under communism were the same as in the subsequent capitalist regime. Third, the Romani minority throughout both periods showed even lower social mobility rates. Fourth, the descendants of the noble class in Hungary in the eighteenth century were still significantly privileged in 1949 and later. And fifth, while social mobility rates did not change measurably during the transition, the composition of the political elite changed fast and sharply.
