    Seeleute gibt es nicht nur auf dem Meer. Sie bevölkern seit langem auch Bereiche unserer Medien- und Alltagskultur, sei es in Kunstwerken, in Büchern und Filmen, in Liedern und Werbeanzeigen. Woher kommen die seemännischen Bilder, wie werden sie kulturell verarbeitet und welche Bedeutung haben sie nicht zuletzt für die "echten" Seeleute? Anhand medialer Inszenierungen und lebensgeschichtlicher Interviews spürt der Autor dem Phänomen des Seemanns nach und analysiert die Wechselwirkung zwischen realer und fiktiver Perspektive. Daraus ergibt sich ein kulturanthropologischer Argumentationsbogen von der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts bis in die Gegenwart.
