This creative weapon has been directed against socio-political targets both in times of oppression and popular upheaval, such as the 2011 Tahrir Revolution. This book looks at the literary expression of Egyptian humour in the novels of Muḥammad Mustajāb, Khayrī Shalabī, and Ḥamdī Abū Julayyil, three writers who revive the comic tradition to innovate the language of contemporary fiction. Their modern tricksters, wise fools, and antiheroes play with the stereotypical traits attached to the ordinary Egyptians, while laughing at the universal contradictions of life. This ability to combine local and global culture, literary traditions and popular references, makes them a stimulating read in an intercultural perspective. Combining humour studies and literary criticism, this book examines language play and narrative creativity to understand which strategies craft Egyptian literary humour. In doing so, it sheds light on the contribution of humour to literary innovations of Egyptian fiction since the late Seventies, while adding new writers to those who are considered the masters of humour in the Arab novel

Im Mittelpunkt steht die Rekonstruktion der sprachlichen Integration dieser Migranten, die im Laufe der Zeit ihre französische Sprache aufgaben und zur deutschen Sprache übergingen. Die Analyse der sprachlichen Situation in drei verschiedenen Hugenottenkolonien zeigt, wie die Sprachwechselprozesse, je nach Ort und Kontext, einen sehr unterschiedlichen Verlauf nahmen. The study deals with the linguistic acculturation at the end of the 17th century of the French Protestant Huguenots, who also sought refuge in Brandenburg. The study focuses on the reconstruction of the linguistic integration of these migrants, who in the course of time gave up their native French language and went over to German. An analysis of the linguistic situation in three different Huguenot colonies shows that the processes of language change differed widely, depending on the place and context.     Text-image combinations can authenticate events and establish a visual memory. Here this phenomenon is explored: A pragmatic theory of text-image relationships is developed and empirically tested on the example of print media reports about terrorism in the FRG during the 1970s. The analyses show how texts unambiguously illuminate the meaning of images and how photographs substantiate and intensify interpretations of spectacular events to an extent which cannot be attained through language alone. Das geschieht auf dem Wege eines interpretativen Verfahrens, das auf Form-Funktions-Zusammenhänge ausgreift und in einem Konzept der Zwieschlächtigkeit sein strukturelles Zentrum hat. Das auf Marx zurückgehende Nomen benennt ein perzeptives Moment, in dem sich ein exegetisch validierter Leseeindruck auskristallisiert und das in den herangezogenen Texten ein Substrat besitzt. Dieses wird als gedankliches und gestalterisches Prinzip aus seinen sprachlichen Ausprägungen herausgearbeitet und als Aufbauelement einer genuin sprachgebundenen, metatheoretischen Problemreflexion kenntlich gemacht. Chapters within this volume offer a range of perspectives on interdisciplinary studies, represent a connection between different disciplines, or demonstrate an application of interdisciplinarity within linguistics. The volume is divided into three sections: perspectives, connections, and applications. Perspectives The goal of this section is to address more generally the definition(s) of and value of multi-, trans-, and inter-disciplinary work. In what areas and for what purposes is there a need for work that crosses discipline boundaries? What are the challenges of undertaking such work? What opportunities are available? Connections This section features paired chapters written by scholars in different disciplines that discuss the same concept/idea/issue. For example, a discussion of how "assemblage" works in archaeology is paired with a discussion of how "assemblage" can be used to talk about ‘style’ in linguistics. Applications This section can be framed as sample answers to the question: What does interdisciplinarity look like?

    This book aims at a systematic analysis of linguistic phenomena in the poetry of Emily Dickinson by combining the methods of linguistics and literary studies. The authors concentrate on the poetry of Emily Dickinson, since it displays a highly uncommon use of language. They argue that this is part of her poetical strategy and gives evidence of a large degree of linguistic competence and awareness
