    Die Beiträge dieses Bandes untersuchen, wie Kultur im Kontext von Religion übersetzt wird. Die literaturwissenschaftlichen, historischen und linguistischen Studien zeigen, wie unterschiedliche kulturelle Traditionen und Sprachen über Grenzen hinweg kommuniziert werden. Die Aufsätze widmen sich dem missionarischen Feld des frühen Mittelalters und kolonialisierten Kulturen von Lateinamerika, Indien, China, Afrika und Australien vom 16. bis zum frühen 20. Jahrhundert. Des Weiteren werden literarische Werke in Hinsicht darauf untersucht, wie sie Kultur übertragen und übersetzen: zum einen ein christliches Theaterstück im islamischen Kontext und zum anderen ein haitianisch-nordamerikanischer Diaspora-Roman. Ein weiterer Beitrag diskutiert, wie das Konzept von Religion selbst im akademischen Bereich erklärt und übertragen wird. Durch die Anwendung unterschiedlicher methodischer Ansätze zeigen die Autoren innovativ auf, wie Kultur übersetzt werden kann.Mit Beiträgen vonGwilym Colenso, Fiona Darroch, Sabine Dedenbach-Salazar Sáenz, Pär Eliasson, Sarah Irving, Alison Jasper, David Moore, Brian Murdoch, Richard H. Roberts, Frauke Sachse, Roxana Sarion. This book addresses the translation of culture in the context of religion. The contributions, which analyse texts in literary, ethnohistorical and/or linguistic terms, show how different cultural traditions and languages are communicated across boundaries. They include studies of the missionary context of the Early Middle Ages and of colonially dominated cultures in Latin America, India, China, Africa and Australia, from the 16th to the early 20th century; and they analyse literary works with respect to how they transmit and translate culture: one a Christian play in the context of Islam, the other one a novel of the Haitian diaspora in the USA; another contribution presents the challenges of how the concept of religion itself is conveyed in contemporary scholarly contexts. By using different methodological tools, the authors show the manifold and innovative ways in which this field of the translation of culture can be approached.     Schier unerschöpflich ist das Vokabular zur Beschreibung von Bösem und Üblem, aber das Böse präzise zu begreifen gelingt nicht. Zu verschieden sind die Phänomene, die mit dieser Kategorie angesprochen sind. Böses meidet die Eindeutigkeit, um unerkannt und unbemerkt sein Geschäft der Verkehrung des Guten betreiben zu können. Um die Kategorie des Bösen als Denkform des Unbegreiflichen zu erhellen, rekonstruiert Ingolf U. Dalferth die Sinngeschichte des Bösen am Leitfaden einer zweifachen Unterscheidung: der zwischen gut und böse, und der zwischen böse und Gott. Diese Unterscheidungen sind historisch und sachlich eng verknüpft. Die neuzeitliche Moralisierung des Bösen ist nur eine wichtige Phase dieser Geschichte. Sie schärft den Blick für manches, aber verstellt ihn auch für anderes. Beide Unterscheidungen fallen allerdings nicht zusammen, solange die Differenz zwischen gut und Gott offen gehalten und nicht durch die Trennung beider Momente oder ihre wechselseitige Gleichsetzung aufgelöst wird. Wo immer Moral und Religion einander abstrakt entgegensetzt werden oder umgekehrt Moral zum Religionsersatz bzw. Religion zum Moralersatz wird, kommt es zu Einseitigkeiten und Verkürzungen. Nur wo diese vermieden werden, lassen sich die Pointe des religiösen Umgangs mit Bösem im Rekurs auf Gott und der spezifische Beitrag theologischen Denkens zur Klärung der Denkform des Bösen deutlich machen.

Placing female translators such as Queen Elizabeth I and Mary Sidney Herbert, Countess of Pembroke, alongside their male counterparts, such as Sir Thomas More and Sir Philip Sidney, Goodrich argues that both male and female translators constructed authorial poses that allowed their works to serve four distinct cultural functions: creating privacy, spreading propaganda, providing counsel, and representing religious groups. Guthke examines the ways in which, for European scholars and writers of the eighteenth and early nineteenth century, world-wide geographical exploration led to an exploration of the self. Guthke explains how in the age of Enlightenment and beyond intellectual developments were fuelled by excitement about what Ulrich Im Hof called ""the grand opening-up of the wide world”, especially of the interior of the non-European continents. This outward turn was complemented by a fascination with ""the world within” as anthropology and ethnology focused on the humanity of the indigenous populations of far-away lands – an interest in human nature that suggested a way for Europeans to understand themselves, encapsulated in Gauguin’s Tahitian rumination ""What are we?”

    The essays in the first half of the book discuss first- or second-hand, physical or mental encounters with the exotic lands and populations beyond the supposed cradle of civilisation. The works of literature and documents of cultural life featured in these essays bear testimony to the crossing not only of geographical, ethnological, and cultural borders but also of borders of a variety of intellectual activities and interests. The second section examines the growing interest in astronomy and the engagement with imagined worlds in the universe, again with a view to understanding homo sapiens, as compared now to the extra-terrestrials that were confidently assumed to exist. The final group of essays focuses on the exploration of the landscape of what was called ""the universe within”; featuring, among a variety of other texts, Schiller’s plays The Maid of Orleans and William Tell, these essays observe and analyse what Erich Heller termed ""The Artist’s Journey into the Interior.”

    This collection, which travels from the interior of continents to the interior of the mind, is itself a set of explorations that revel in the discovery of what was half-hidden in language. This is a critical edition, with introduction and commentary, of four poems (I.2.17; II.1.10, 19, 32). The commentary is primarily linguistic, but attention is paid to historical and theological matters. The poems' fate in Byzantium is also examined and three Byzantine paraphrases are edited in an appendix.

     

    The introduction examines features of Gregory's poetry in general. Gregory was an enthusiastic reader of Callimachus and his use of poetic allusion deserves special attention.

    With the rise of Christianity in the Roman Empire, increasing numbers of educated people converted to this new belief. As Christianity did not have its own educational institutions, the issue of how to harmonize pagan education and Christian convictions became increasingly pressing. Especially classical poetry, the staple diet of pagan education, was considered morally corrupting (because of its deceitful mythological content) and damaging for the salvation of the soul (because of the false gods it advocated). But Christianity recoiled from an unqualified anti-intellectual attitude, while at the same time the experiment of creating an idiosyncratic form of genuinely Christian poetry failed (the sole exception being the poet Commodianus). This book argues that, instead, Christian poets made creative use of the classical literary tradition, and—in addition to blending it with Judaeo-Christian biblical exegesis—exploited poetry’s special ability of enhancing the effectiveness of communication through aesthetic means. It seeks to explore these strategies through a close analysis of a wide range of Christian, and for comparison partly also pagan, writers mainly from the fourth to sixth centuries. The book reveals that early Christianity was not a hermetically sealed uniform body, but displays a rich spectrum of possibilities in dealing with the past and a willingness to engage with and adapt the surrounding culture(s), thereby developing diverse and changing responses to historical challenges. By demonstrating throughout that authority is a key in understanding the long denigrated and misunderstood early Christian poets, this book reaches the ground-breaking conclusion that early Christian poetry is an art form that gains its justification by adding cultural authority to Christianity. Thus, in a wider sense this book engages with the recently emerged scholarly interest in aspects of religion as cultural phenomena.

The edition is based on three manuscripts, which are briefly presented in the introduction. P (Par. gr. 2003, Paris) and M (Marc. gr. 532, Venice) were both written in the early fourteenth century; E (Scor. gr. 248, Escorial) is a sixteenth-century copy of M.

    After the edition, with accompanying English translation and notes, the book is concluded with a bibliography and three indexes: of quoted passages, Greek words, and Greek names.

    Several of the essays in this volume contain laments on the reduced state of the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantium), and on the vicissitudes of human life and fortune.
